My fiance and I stayed at Moderne Hotel in January 2012 and were very pleased with the experience. For the price, it is a very good option if you want to be in mid town. You can certainly pay a lot more for a lot less in NYC. Victoria at the front desk was very professional and friendly and made us feel right at home the moment we walked in the door. Because it was my finance's birthday, Victoria offered to put a cupcake in our room. I thought this was a nice touch. Ted at the front desk was also nice and offered to help. There were a couple of bell hops whose names I don't know, but they too were professional and courteous.
The hotel itself is very trendy and funky (in a good way). If you like a modern look then you won't be dissapointed. The walls of the halls are bright and wild. The second floor lounge is great. We didn't get up early enough to enjoy the coffee cake that is available from 7-9AM, but we found the coffee, apple cider, water, and fruit to be very convenient. The hotel also has a happy hour in the evening on the second floor.
I was concerned by a couple Trip Advisor reviews about the cleanliness of the room, but our room was very clean and done up nicely. No complaints from me. The shower was outstanding and I wish I had one at home just like it. My only minor complaint is that we did hear some noise coming from the hallway during the night, but as I am a heavy sleeper it didn't both me too much.
I would recommend this hotel especially for those in town for a Broadway show. It's just a few blocks from the shows.
