“4 night of perfection, we will return!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at the grad central for 4 nights and it was totally worth it. The room was perfect not too small which is what we expected for new york, very spacious, comfortable bed, wardrobe space, clean bathroom and had a coffee machine!! The hotel was comfortable and clean and we really felt at home in Ireland in it. We ate 2 nights in the wheel tapper bar and it was delish, good selection of food they even had Lyons tea!! Breakfast was also delish with lots to choose from. the wheeltapper bar was buzzing every night we stayed and was great fun yet the rooms were lovely and quiet you would forget u are in the heart of NYC. The staff were very helpful and friendly they even printed out our boarding pass and helped us flag down a city cab back to the airport! The hotel its self is in a fab location grand central station is across the road and 5th avenue is under a 5 min walk! All in all it was a lovely experience and we will definitely be going back again and telling all family and friends about it too.

We were originally booked at the Hilton Doubletree in the Financial District, but even two weeks after Hurricane Sandy the hotel didn't have hot water - nor did they let us know before we arrived that they didn't have hot water. Needless to say, we needed to book another room quickly. Easytobook had the cheapest rates so we picked the Fitzpatrick and got a Deluxe room. When we arrived a couple hours later, our reservation had not gone through to their reservation database so we left our bags and walked around a bit and came back at their suggested time of 4:45 PM. Our reservation STILL had not come through but thankfully I had gone to a Starbucks (free wifi!!) and downloaded our confirmation email from Easytobook. The hotel honoured our reservation (because we had the confirmation email) and gave us 4 free drink tickets to their pub thats attached (Taj was AWESOME). The price ended up being a bit more USD than the actual confirmation email had said (maybe becasue it includes tax that wasn't shown on the Easytobook website), but it gave us a place to sleep. Therefore my review is as follows: the Fitzpatrick is a fantastic hotel to stay at, but a little on the pricey side (service was amazing, but the rooms were lacking a lot - we had a fire alarm in our room have the low battery beeping at 2:00 AM and that was really no fun after a long day). Easytobook was a let down. The reservation never went through (maybe becasue we made the reservation same day - but then they should not offer that option if this is what is going to happen).

We stayed in this hotel right before hurricane Sandy. The big pluses of the hotel is its central and convenient location (across the Grand Central Station in the middle of Manhattan) and the very friendly and accommodating staff. The rooms are generally small (typical for NY) and the one I've got had only one window overlooking a wall. Not ideal, if you are claustrophobic. On the other hand, the room was very quiet, especially considering there was construction going on in the area at night at that time. The bathroom was spotless clean, but the carpet in the room needed cleaning. In the corridor there was a slight smell of mold. Probably because there is not much aeration in this area.

My husband and I were left without power at our home after the storm and made the decision to stay at the Fitzpatrick Grand Central based on the reviews on this site and the hotel's proximity to our office which was only a 1/2 block away.

We were truly happy with the quality of the property overall. It is a clean, comfortable boutique hotel that is priced reasonably for the standard in Manhattan. The beds are comfortable, the bathroom spotlessly maintained. The overall feeling of the hotel is very much like a good small hotel in Europe. It is not glamorous, but very clean and comfortable. There is a pub/restaurant downstairs that is lively and fun to have a cocktail in and we enjoyed delicious martinis there. We didn't sample any of the menu, but many folks were happily eating. We stayed for five nights total. We had requested a quiet room on a high floor away from the elevator and received just that in our assigned room, room 915.

What really made the experience special, even enjoyable, during such a stressful time was the absolutely wonderful attention and consideration we received from virtually every staff member we encountered here throughout the hotel. The people at the front desk, including John, Elizabeth, Marilyn, Lucia, Taj and Kelly were all lovely and professional and went out of their way to assist us. I must make special mention of Leeann, who at age 22 has more grace and wit under pressure than most people three times her age ( which i almost am!). She is a very special young woman.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and recommend the hotel highly. It was a very pleasant port in a very nasty storm.

Fantastic hotel. Great central location right next to Grand Central Terminal and the subway system. Would return tomorrow if I didn't have to go to work! We booked the hotel through BA as a package with flights and took advantage of an upgrade of the room. We were right on the front of the hotel looking out onto the street. The hotel is quite literally within a stone's throw of the Chrysler Building. The hotel is also used for the BA flight crews! Staff very friendly and checked us in early. Holiday was fantastic would also recommend the New York Pass for tourist attractions, worth every penny. We certainly got value for our money.

We chose this hotel from a Hayes & Jarvis brochure based on its star rating and on Trip Advisor reviews. We were celebrating our Honeymoon.

We were welcomed by helpful receptionist Leeanne. She said she wasn't in a position to upgrade us (even though we didn't ask her to) but she would try and allocate the largest room on our floor, which we thought was very kind.

We had booked a 'deluxe' room and were allocated a room on the sixth floor. The landings of each floor were tastefully decorated and had carpet which helped minimise noise from people to-ing and fro-ing from rooms.

When we found our room it didn't really seem to be that large to be honest, so would have been interested to see a smaller room if there was one that Leeanne chose not to put us in.

The brochure said the room would have a fridge which it didn't have for some reason. So, to be honest, I don't think we really did get the large deluxe room, but we only wanted the room as a base, we werent planning on spending much time there. To be fair, Leeanne called up to the room about 10 minutes after we checked in to make sure we were happy and that everything was in order, and we said yes, not wanting to complain or, more to the point, not having the energy to think about room swapping after a long flight.

Our room was lovely:

SHOWER: lovely big overbath shower which was hot and powerful any time of day, even when the hurricane was passing through.

BATHROOM: There was a large, well lit wall mirror, an electric light-up shaving/make-up mirror and a full length mirror on the back of the door. Towels were clean and changed daily and the free toiletries were extensive and would help any traveller who had forgotten something. Good to see that housekeeping did thorough cleaning job each day, you could tell they weren’t just skimming around the place. Hairdryer was good quality - no need to take your own.

BED: I WANT ONE OF THOSE!!!! Honestly, the most comfortable bed I've EVER slept in!! Mattress was unbelievably soft but supportive - how do they do that? It was nice and high too. Pillows were very comfortable. Bedding was crisp and clean, with extra bedding available in the room without having to trouble reception for more.

ROOM IN GENERAL: One wardrobe with lighting inside, including shelving and rails. There was an ironing board, iron, suitcase rack and safe in here as well. It was well stocked with hangers and had about four shelves plus a top shelf to stash one of our suitcases on. Safe was easy to use and it was reassuring to have it in our room. There was a bedside table for each person with individual lamps and a telephone. In addition there was a large desk with a chair and the usual hotel information sheets. There was a large wall-mounted TV which in normal circumstances we wouldn't have watched, but it was really useful on this trip to keep an eye on the developing hurricane. The news channels were great for getting up to date information about airport, transport and broadway show closures etc.

NOISE: None at all - our room was located at the rear of the hotel, with aircon fans from neighbouring buildings not too far away across a kind of courtyard area. The windows were extremely good at sound-proofing the room because we didn’t hear a thing through the night, not even Hurricane Sandy!! Also, the curtains were excellent blackouts.

Our paperwork stated that we had a guaranteed 2pm checkout on our last day, but we were told 12pm when we were checking in, so straight away we had to challenge that and it felt like we were asking for special treatment which was a little uncomfortable. However, Leeanne agreed this would be fine. At 1.30pm on our last day we received a call to the room from Leeanne, reminding us that check-out was 12pm, they needed the room so did we know how long we were going to be. All a bit of a mix up really.

FOYER: clean and quiet, with a library styled seating area to one side. There were also some comfortable seats in a quieter area near the entrance to the Wheeltapper restaurant and patio area, which in itself was a hidden gem. We had cocktails on arrival and it was a great start to our holiday! There were three receptionists on duty the whole time we were there, so you never struggled to get attention if you needed to ask a question, which was very good. However, one thing that I found odd was their computer screens actually got in the way of a good conversation! Positioned rather awkwardly, it was easier to stand and talk down to the receptionist so that you could see their face, but this felt rather condescending. Perhaps they can re-think the ergonomics of the desks for both the experience of the receptionists and the guests?

I would suggest that one thing was missing from this foyer area, a desk with a computer and printer so that guests could access the internet, whether this was a payable service or not, it would just have been really useful, especially when the hurricane struck during our visit and we were desperate to get messages home to our family. I've seen this in other hotels and especially in places where guests can print tickets/passes for attractions that they book on arrival in resort. We needed to confirm our pre-booked helicopter flight, and the receptionist very kindly made the call for us from the desk.

Access to rooms was via two lifts which were in working order and never slow to arrive throughout our stay.

BREAKFAST: This wasn't included in our booking but for convenience on our first morning we went to the Wheeltapper and had a really great breakfast. I would recommend either the Irish or the Wheeltapper Breakfast to set you up really well for a long day's sightseeing ahead, pancakes, sausage, egg, home fries, tea/coffee and orange juice. We spent about $45 per day just on breakfast for the two of us, but this was sufficient to last us until dinner and bypass the need to stop for lunch.

The Wheeltapper dining areas were styled in an authentic irish railway theme, which was well done, albeit with a rather low-lit ambience. The staff were very attentive and tables were cleaned and cleared regularly allowing for guests to find a seat at all times.

LOCATION: Superb for everything because of its close proximity to Grand Central Station for the subway/trains/taxi. Lovely walks along Lexington, especially Saturday morning for the street market, and also to Tudor City and the United Nations, 42nd Street and all the lovely places along the way. Just perfect yet so quiet. I stayed near 8th Avenue on my last visit which was OK but I would certainly prefer to return to this side of town if I get the chance to come back.

SERVICE: Leeanne spoilt us by letting the manager know that it was our Honeymoon, and he in turn sent a handwritten note to our room with complimentary champagne and delicious chocolate covered strawberries for our first night in the city - how wonderful!

We were supposed to be flying home soon after the hurricane passed through NYC, so our last night at the hotel was a stressful one, particularly as the hotel was fully booked - not with pre-booked guests arriving in NYC, but with people moving over from other hotels who had been severely affected by the power cuts, which we were so lucky we didn't experience. We asked if we could extend our room but this wasn't possible. They put us in touch with colleagues at the Fitzpatrick Manhattan who were very helpful. In the end the airport opened the morning we were due to leave, so it wasn't necessary to find alternative accommodation.

We have to praise the hotel for their organisation during a crisis. Their staff were clearly committed to keeping the hotel running, no shortages of people, food, power, linens etc. The only sign of a hurricane was once you stepped outside the hotel. We felt safe, secure, warm and welcome. The concierge team were helpful, particularly recommending alternative transport links to Newark following the storm.

SUMMARY: I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends, family and fellow travellers, and would look to return here if the opportunity arises to visit NYC again. We had a memorable trip, interrupted by Mother Nature, so look forward to coming back and finishing what we started. We would choose the Fitzpatrick Grand Central without a doubt.

My wife and I normally stay at the Doubletree on Lexington, but decided to give the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel a try this time during our ten day stay. From the minute we checked in we found the staff to be friendly and welcoming, the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable The hotel is situated in a great location and is two minutes from Grand Central Terminal and within easy access to Times Square etc. This will be our hotel of choice for future visits to NYC.
