“Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

This is my second time staying at the Wellington. I returned as I was happy with my first visit so knew what to expect. It's good value for money - a decent enough hotel in a great location, convenient for all the action. The Wellington is only a few minutes' walk from Central Park, 5th Avenue and about 10 mins from Times Square, so it's a great base to explore.

The room is typically small for New York, although it does the job. It has all the usual mod cons but can get a little cramped when you bring all the shopping back each day due to lack of storage space! I'd advise having a room on a higher floor as it's less noisy. We initially had a 3rd floor room overlooking 7th avenue, but moved to a quieter room on the 18th floor. The room was okay but the air-con was noisy and the tiny bathroom had a musty smell to it. The bed also felt small but it was comfortable enough.

It's usual not to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room. This is because with the huge variety of eateries close by, there really isn't any need to make drinks in the room. The Starbucks opposite the hotel makes great "English Tea" and I'd recommend having breakfast in the Deli opposite. Avoid the hotel's diner on the ground floor and the Benash delicatessen next door as they are both overpriced.

Friendly, efficient reception staff and porters. Good as a base to explore with no major shortcomings.

Tip: take a yellow taxi to transfer to/from JFK airport. It's just a standard rate of $45 each way (excluding tip). The shuttle busses are a lot more expensive.

Room Tip: The higher up, the less street noise.

“Fantastic location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2012 via mobile

Just arrived back from a four day stay. location of hotel is brilliant, two blocks from central park one way and five minutes away from times square.
The room was clean but very small, it was a double room but the bed was only slightly bigger than a single.
We did complain but told that was what we had booked. i said no way was the bed a double and just got shrugged off.
No tea and coffee making facilities which is a pain but if you go to the hotel cafe its great for food and a drink. also next door is a cafe called fluffies , we had breakfast there every day the food was fantastic.
We would defo stay here again. its great value for money. only negative was the tiny bathroom and the small room and the very small bed !
perfect for a short break , this is our second trip to new york and will defo return to the wellington.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2012

Arrived at 11.15ish on 14th Feb to find that our travel agent hadn't actually booked the hotel, although we had paid in full and had the documents to say we were booked in. This was not the fault of the hotel and they advised us to contact the agent and find out what we should do. They also contacted the agent on our behalf. The receptionist told us to check our bags into storage and then return at 3.00 which is normal checking in time. We did this and they had spoken to the agent and been given the go ahead to give us a room. They managed to find us a room, even though they had said they were full because it was Valentine's Day. When we got the room we could see how it was still free!! It was very small and had a king sized bed in it (although it didn't look like a king to us). If it had just been 2 adults the room would probably have done, but we had booked (or thought we had) a room with 2 double beds as there were three of us, 2 adults and our 16 year old son. We were told we could have a rollaway bed which would be put in the room later. The bathroom was also tiny. Toilet, basin and bath all wedged against each other in a room the slze of a small cupboard. We went out and returned around 7 to find that there was no extra bed, and actually nowhere to put one either! We contacted the desk and they told us that we could have a room for that night in the Blakely Hotel, another in the same group, which was across the road on 55th Avenue. Well if anyone reading this wants a nice hotel room, this is the one! We were given a king suite which consisted of a huge room with a king sized bed, tv, armchair and desk, and a separate room with a day bed, tv, armchairs and tv in it. As well as a huge bathroom with a big walk in shower. We have a very nice sleep that night!
Next morning it was back to the Wellington as rooms were available for us. We got two double beds in two rooms that had been connected with a doorway knocked in between. Again two very small rooms with a double bed in each, but we did have 2 bathooms, but they were two small cupboards again. By now we thought we would just put up with it and complain to the agent when we returned (we would be doing this anyway because of the lack of booking). Spent the night listening to either the air conditioning units on the flat room outside our room, or the air conditioning unit in the room clattering all night. Next morning I asked if we could be moved and the man on reception told me that I was in a city now and that noise was part of that!! He said we shouldn't have the window open anyway, as it was winter. I explained that with 3 grown people in a room, a bit of air is needed. He then told me that I shouldn't be touching the air conditioning controls!!! Advised again to pack bags and then check in again at 3. Did this and were given a room on 25th floor, 2 double beds, reasonable sized bathroom, view straight down 7th Avenue to Times Square. Noisy, lighter at night that in the daytime (with all the lights from Times Square) but exactly the room we had expected when booking.
All in all I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. The reception areas are OK but the rooms are small, miserable and tatty. Paintwork flaking, bottom of doors peeling, handles coming off units.
This whole trip was booked by my husband as a surprise for my 50th birthday. He was promised a nice Art Deco style hotel with good rooms at a mid range price.
What he got was a dingy, outdated hotel with scruffy rooms. It might have been a mid range price he paid but it was definitely not mid range quality.

The hotel doesn't even bother to put any information in the rooms about what is available in the hotel. Just a menu for the cafe by the entrance.
Final verdict is don't be fooled by the photos in the brochure. There may be a couple of rooms that look like that but you are unlikely to get one of them! I wouldn't even say its up to the standard of a bog standard British Travel Inn which we stay in often an have never had to ask to change room!

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel. I wouldn't offer anyone advice on this hotel except to say not to book...

“Good value but mediocre hotel in great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

Stayed for 4 nights with my daughter in a fairly small twin room. Location is great - near Times Square; Central Park; 5th Avenue and hotel was pretty good value but it was really busy so checking in took a while, we had to wait for a porter to get up to the bedroom; then the room wasn't ready; shower wasn't hot at 4pm on two days running but fine in the morning; had to get someone to sort out the heating cos couldn't turn it off and the room consequently was boiling; at the end of our stay we asked them to sort out a taxi to JFK - was told it would be $45 plus taxes and tip - total of $61 - and that it'd take max one hour - when we got into the taxi, the driver said it could take up to 2 hours (rush hour - we left at 4pm - in fact it did only take 45 mins but I was a bit anxious about time) and he said the tip was for the hotel not for him (wasn't sure about this but paid tip anyway). All in all, given the location, the hotel was good value and as we went on a recommendation from a friend I didn't spend much time researching hotels. If you want great location and are prepared for a few smallish snags, it's fine.

Room Tip: good to be on one of the upper floors for two reasons - traffic noises; and the lifts in the morning...

“Fine for city sightseeing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

We stayed in a standard double room on the 26th floor for 2 nights in February. The hotel is a great location for walking to Broadway shows, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, St. Patrick's, and excellent dining.

The room itself was very small; and as it is an older building the bathroom was tiny and dated (paint peeling in places, etc.) The bed was small and a little uncomfortable, but I thought it was a small price to pay for a good view of Central Park and the location. The coffee shop has a good breakfast menu and cheap wine/beer in the evening!

We would go again, but it is not by any means a "high end" hotel experience.
