“On The Ave is on the mark”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2011

I worked at a luxury hotel for ten years some time ago, so I know what a challenge it can be to consistently deliver a great guest experience. On The Ave has done a wonderful job of meeting that challenge for the numerous stays I have spent here in the past ten years. This most recent visit was way too short (2 days), but that's not their fault!

If you are wondering whether or not to stay at OTA for the first time, consider these factors:

Location -- The hotel on on the Upper West Side, which means you get the benefit of a quieter Manhattan than, say, mid-town or Times Square, but everything is easily gotten to by walking (Central Park, Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center...) or a quick taxi or subway ride.

Rooms -- The size of many of the OTA rooms is positively huge compared to the New York standard. This also goes for their bathrooms, which sometimes have walk-in showers. The decor is boutique and modern but not too artsy as to be uncomfortable. And the beds are easily the most comfortable I have seen in any hotel anywhere.

Staff -- From the front doorman to the maintenance guy you bump in to in he hallway, everyone is very friendly and helpful. There seems to be a real pride in the employees of OTA, and that makes a huge diffence.

There are a couple of things that could be improved upon. The elevators can get filled up easily and at "rush hour" you may have to wait a bit longer to get up to or down from your room. Also, the wireless Internet service can be spotty in some of the guest rooms, but I have been told they are working on addressing this issue. And the wireless in the lobby is excellent. In fact, that is where I am sitting now as I write this!

As my friends know, I am a huge fan of On The Ave - and considerr it MY hotel in New York City!

“Excellent Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2011

I found the service to be excellent and very accomodating. It is a good UWS hotel for Sabbath observers.

“Home away from Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2011

Every year I trave to New York for the Auto Show and I've experienced many hotels in the city. On The Ave was recommended by a friend so I gave it a shot. It was great! The rooms were clean, very modern, and the bed was extremely comfortable. All of the employees were extremely professional and helpful. I needed some tailoring done while here, and they directed me to a local place that did a great job, fast.

The General Manager of the hotel, Mrs. Segev, was especially helpful in arranging transportation and recommending some great restaurants for my clients.

About the only complaint I have is that the elevators are slow, but I can live with that if I can get service like this at reasonable rates.

Room Tip: Upper West Side is a great place to stay

“Excellent boutique opportunity in Upper West Side”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2011

I stayed at On the Ave not knowing what to expect as the hotel my colleagues were staying in was booked. I was very pleasantly surprised. My hotel was much better. Staff helpfully upgraded me and I enjoyed the terrific details in the room as well as outdoor balcony. The walkable factor was also key; it is nice to be able to get both a walkable and urban feeling hotel without having to sacrifice on the quality of the room. I had recently stayed in a very large "business" oriented hotel in NYC that took about 15 minutes to exit from based on the sheer scale. I would recommend this hotel again especially to business travelers who need an efficient place to work but also want to be able to get out and walk around freely.

Room Tip: Seek a room on a high floor

“Cool hotel, hot location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2011

My husband and I stayed at OTA this past week, while our teenagers stayed with Grandma. By the time I got around to making reservations the premium rooms (second step up) were sold out, so we booked a standard king. I'm glad to say I can even recommend their "lowliest" option. The room was so small that there was only room for the bed, two nightstands, a very narrow worktable against the wall (with chair), and a small fridge (with a flat screen TV on the wall), However, the bed and linens were comfortable, the fridge was stocked with interesting (though quite over-priced) snacks and drinks, and the bathroom (and shower) were good-sized by NY standards (which was helpful as we are also "good-sized" ). There was a single window, but it was a tall one with a lovely view of the art deco building opposite, and the additional room lighting was great. The whole room seemed cool and fresh and it was very, very clean; with a friendly maid who seemed available no matter what time we left the room (from 9 am to 2 pm). We were placed on the 7th floor facing Broadway, but there was very little street noise. And, as mentioned by others before, the location can't be beat. My DH brought back breakfast every morning from the European Bakery, which had wonderful bagels and croissants. And in addition to the convenience of public transport, we never had to wait longer than 3 minutes for a taxi either at the hotel or on the corner of 77th and Broadway (about 50 feet away), even in the rain. Finally, I think the hotel is a very good value, especially for the areas we were looking at (Upper East and West Sides). With AAA rates, it was well under $300/night (would have been under $250 except for Saturday rate). For the two of us, I think we have a new "favorite place to stay" in New York City. We'll just go for the slightly larger rooms next time.
