“It is with a selfless spirit that I reveal this gem...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2010

As an expatriate New Yorker, I return to the city frequently, always in search of a perfect hotel - away from Times Square tourism, and well-situated for visits to Central Park, museums, subway, local food places and friends. I look for something reasonable yet sophisticated, clean, comfortable and with attentive service. The Lucerne now tops my list. It is boutique in category, corner of 79th and Amsterdam, a block from the subway, nestled in the family friendly but sophisticated upper west side of Manhattan. The rate was reasonable, the room clean, quiet, of moderate size and well-appointed with a partial view of the Hudson. The service was attentive, including a pre-arrival call from the concierge to determine my needs. Elevators though small, were easily available, even at the height of use. This felt more like a European experience than an American, especially New York, one. Not being one for hotel restaurants, but meeting a friend with only the lunch hour free, we dined on a Friday at Nice Matin, the popular, relatively reasonable and tasty food restaurant of the Lucerne. Les moules et frites mariniere were particularly delectable. Walks to Zabar's and H & H Bagels on Broadway and 80th were easy and fun. Central Park and Riverside Park are only a few blocks away. My only less than stellar observations: it took 3 calls to get towels that on the third day the maid had forgotten to leave; a fax from my office never made it to me; and if only the light in the bathroom were not accompanied by a deafening fan, all would have been perfect.

Stayed at the Lucerne for 5 days recently. It's a very well maintained, clean hotel on Upper West Side - a great location as it's an easy walk to Museums and central Park, but also just 15 minutes either by cab or on the subway to the centre of town. All the staff without exception were lovely, and seemed to genuinely want to help rather than follow corporate greetings. Photos of the hotel website gives the impression of a large, grand hotel with amazing rooms. I was very suprised how small the hotel actually is, and whilst the rooms are very comfortable they are actually quite small, with no more than 3 star facilites. We had a superior double room which is adequate for a couple with 2 small children or 1 older child - but no more! The beds are small doubles, tiny bathroom, one small cupboard. However the hotel is charming and the staff great.
Nice Matin the restaurant next door is ok for supper, and mediochre for breakfast (on the pricy side, cremated bacon) but there are lots of great places to choose from locally. Breakfast is a MUSTat Zabar's which is 2 minutes walk away on Broadway (right out of the hotel, right by the lights and cross the road - can't miss it). Abrupt staff (not quite rude) but fabulous food to either eat in or take out. Don't have their cooked breakfast option (it looks like airline packs) but WOW to everything else. An amazing 'New York'. deli.

This was our third stay at the Lucerne in the last 9 months. As said before, location is amazing. Besides the major attractions nearby, there are also many very good small restaurants on Amsterdam within a few blocks of the hotel. We enjoy the hotel, but one word of advice...try to get a room on an upper floor. The last 2 times we stayed, we were on floor 6 or 7 and had a nice view. This last time, we had a "Superior Queen Suite" on the third floor, and there was absolutely no view. All windows looked directly into other buildings. Rooms and bathrooms at the hotel are pretty small. The suite was nice because it had a sitting room with sofa, fridge, microwave. It was small as well, but nice to have a separate sitting area. When we arrived, it was like our room cleaning/stocking was not completed. There was no soap, no glasses, and no robes. These were promptly brought up after a call to the front desk. Fitness room is nice (2 ellipticals, 2 bikes, 2 treadmills and a few weight machines). The equipment has the individual TVs, so either bring your own headsets, or ask at the desk when you check in for some. We'll definately continue to stay at the hotel, and would recommend to others.

We went to New York for a few days with our children (spring break) and stayed at the Lucerne for three nights. The location on the Upper West Side is very convenient -- 79th St. subway stop is one short block, the Museum of Natural History is two blocks, and Central Park is three blocks. The staff was very helpful, welcoming, and eager to make our stay successful. The double room we had was surprisingly large by NY standards and quiet (5th floor). There are a number of nice neighborhood restaurants nearby so we were able to eat inexpensively and quickly with the children. We will certainly stay there again when we return to New York.

Stayed for a short business trip and I must say the staff was great. Far too many hotels have that very robotic professional staff that just say the words but could care less. The Lucerne has a staff that actually seems to care. Nice rooms, nice fitness center and super location.

Great location (upper west side, easy walk to Central Park, Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art. Subway ( 1) one block away, bus stops nearby. Pharmacy across the street, cafe at street level, laundromat/dry cleaners across the street, fresh fruit street market one block away. Older hotel, but rooms are clean, nicely decorated and our two double-bed room was generous in size. Showers were good pressure, beds comfortable. Staff was very pleasant and accommodating. Concierge available by front desk, doorman.
Closets are small, but adequate. Safe, iron, ironing board in closet. We paid about $225/night. I'm still trying to get used to paying more than $100 a night for a hotel, but given the prices in NYC, this place was very nice for the price.

Each year my family (myself, husband, two kids ages 7 and 4 and) stays at The Lucerne for one night for my birthday celebration. This year my mother joined us and we booked a deluxe queen suite.

We drove in from Connecticut and parked for free on Riverside Drive. There's always a space available and the neighborhood is safe. We dropped my mom and kids at the hotel with the luggage; we parked and walked several blocks to join them. The perks of street parking-- it's free!! and you can stay over 24 hours without having to move your car or be penalized by paying around $75 more when you use the parking garage recommended by The Lucerne.

We love this hotel. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. The lobby is small, cozy, and inviting. You must walk up several steps to get into the lobby, and the elevators are very small. If you don't have a stroller that folds easily, good luck getting into the elevator.

Our room was spotlessly clean and lovely. The deluxe queen suite is one regular room with a door to a smaller room that had a love-seat sized couch, a desk, a microwave, a small fridge, some serviceware, and a generously sized bathroom for the City. My mother originally wanted the love-seat pull-out bed room to herself, until we pulled out the bed. The mattress was very thin and not so comfortable for an adult. My seven-year-old slept on it and thought it was fine.

If you're traveling with small children, be aware that the windows open all the way. There is no security for them, and a child could easily fall out.

The climate system works well, so you'll never be too hot or too cold. If your room faces 79th street, you may want to use the air conditioner to block out street noise at night.

Other than the fact that the t.v. remotes don't work so well, we had no complaints. We appreciated the free wi-fi throughout the hotel and the free New York Times newspaper.

This location can't be beat. Crumbs cupcake bakery is down the street. There are literally hundreds of shops, restaurants, and museums within walking distance. Central Park and Riverside Park are short walks.

If you require luxury and many amenities, don't book here; if you desire a super-clean, slightly upscale, lovely spot on the Upper West Side, The Lucerne cannot be beat.
