“Great location, free parking!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2012

This is my second time that I've booked at this hotel and I was still not disappointed. It's pretty hard to be disappointed for a well-priced hotel with free parking (parking can be 35$ a day in NYC). The thing is, is that you need to be a quad occ. to make it a good price. A would say that the hotel is basic and nothing was not good. I went to this hotel maybe 6 years ago and got a room that was with an entry outside (the room of the door was outside the main building, around the outside pool which makes the hotel look like a motel sort of. That room was a little damp and older, but maybe since then, they done renovations.

I even shipped a parcel to the hotel, and they received it (at first, the person from security didn't remember receiving it, but then confirmed the name of the person who had signed for it, and then remembered...).

You also need to book at this hotel in advance and with its 24hr cancellation policy, it's worth booking in advance and just cancelling if you're not leaving to NY finally. Last minute bookings at this hotel must be impossible. I always book directly on their website and get the best rate.

This hotel is literally 2-3 blocks from Times Square and maybe a block from the bus terminal. I couldn't ask for better for the same price.

To finish, I think it would of costed us the same price to stay in a hostel further so you really get the best price for a greatly located hotel in NY. Nothing luxurious, but the basic (anyways, do you stay in NY for the hotel or to be in the city?!!) Oh and there's a 7eleven and a Duane Right a block away!

Room Tip: Ask for a room inside the main building and not on the outside balconies around the pool area.

We went just before Christmas with a large group of friends and we stayed a full week at the Travel Inn. We all liked the hotel. Surely not a luxury venue, but we found all we needed: clean rooms, good heating, nice staff. The best thing is that the hotel is 5-10 min walking distance to Times Square, close to all transportation. We really enjoyes our stay and definitely would go back - I would recommend to anyone. The fact the hotel doesnt provide breakfast allowed us to discover the renown deli places serving yummy pancakes and delicious cappuccinos. And: room rates are lowest in Manhattan ;)

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012

I spent 6 nights at the Travel Inn with my son in mid-December.

First impressions were great, very welcoming reception area, warm and festive looking, check-in was fast and efficient. Reception staff were helpful but not over friendly. After having read some negative comments regarding staff attitude I was expecting worse but it really was no problem at all.

We were directed to the lift and made our way up to our room where we encountered our first problem. I had emailed ahead to ask for a quiet-ish room to find we had been given a room facing 42nd street. It was very noisy and on being in the room for just 5 mins, I realised there was no way we would have had a peaceful sleep so back down to reception we went.

Our room was changed with no bother at all and our second room was in the 'older' part of the hotel - motel style rooms that surround the outdoor pool. We found it to be clean, well appointed, great fridge and microwave that we used most days but a very dated bathroom which could really do with updating. Two comfortable double beds and a lovely flat screen TV (could have done with a channel list though!). No real complaints - brilliant maid service too. One thing to note is that you had to run the shower for a good 10 minutes before you got any hot water out of it, might have been the time of year though??

After the first night we started to feel the cold in the room. This was probably down to the fact that the heating in these rooms is pretty ancient looking and that you actually have to exit the main hotel itself to reach your front door so you are not benefitting from the heat in the main hotel. I rang down to reception to be told that the heating was on an automated system and when it dropped below 40 degrees we would get heat!! Not ideal and we spent that evening watching TV under our bedding! Thankfully the following night the temperature dropped and we got heating!! Not ideal in winter but I can imagine that these rooms are lovely during the summer.

The next issue that we came across was the paper thin walls as mentioned by others. For the first couple of days we had two ladies who woke me up at 6am chatting. After that a family moved in with a young child who didn't stop talking/shouting from the hours of 7pm to 10pm - we were glad they left after just two nights!

During our stay we had need to use a few of the facilities namely the safety deposit box behind reception, the printer to get our attraction tickets and the wi-fi in our room. Absolutely no complaints at all - in fact the wi-fi worked brilliantly in our room and was a really great price, $6 for 24 hours. I can also recommend the little shop in reception which is like a Tardis!! Slightly overpriced but stocks pretty much anything you might need.

Most mornings we ate breakfast at the deli next to the hotel. Fantastic service, great prices and lovely food - highly recommended! Within 5 mins walk of the hotel there is also a liquer store and a small but well stocked supermarket if you wish to stock up your fridge - we found this invaluable after a long days sightseeing when all we wanted to do was crash out in our room.

Location was simply perfect, 10 mins walk to Times Square and subway. Many restaurants and fast food joints within 10 mins walk in any direction. Could not fault in that aspect.

Overall we had a pretty pleasant experience and I would probably recommend if on a budget.

Room Tip: Away from 42nd street, not by the pool in winter!

I thank you for your recent review and am happy that your overall stay with us was a success. I am happy that our staff was able to accomodate your change request immediately. We do our very best to accomodate every guest request but it is sometimes impossible to do. Our heat is on an automatic switch as most hotels according to the temparature outside of the property but if the room is ever so cold, please call our Management office and we will rectify the problem right away. I apologize also if the walls seemed a bit thin but unfortunately, there is really nothing we can do about this problem. We surely hope that you visit us again soon.

I have stayed at this hotel 4 times, it is 3 blocks from time square, 3 blocks from Javis Center, easy to get to, and to top it free parking. They have wifi and a pool in the summer. I really love this hotel. the staff if so nice and friendly. one complaint the one elevator didn't work on our last stay.

Although this hotel is not luxurious or full of amenities, it is an incredible bargain - if you select the right dates. The rates fluctaute according to demand - anywhere from $160 to $300 per night for a double room. We stayed the weekend before Christmas and paid $165 per night, plus the numerous New York City taxes. Much of the clientele was foreign. The location is very good, but one of the most important features for us is the free parking. It can easily cost $50 per night to park in New York City, so this is an excellent amenity.

The rooms at the front of the hotel can be noisy. The hotel is located directly across from a police station so there are sirens constantly.

Room Tip: Request a room at the back as the street facing rooms are noisier.

Thank you for your review of your recent stay. I completely agree with the parking comment as parking in New York City is ranging from $40 to $50 per day. The Travel Inn is the only hotel in New York City that offers free parking and you can clearly see the benefit of this amenity if you stay 2 days or more. We look forward to your next stay with us in the early future and wish you a great 2012

Travelled on the 7th to the 12th of December 2011
On arrival at the hotel the check in was smooth, no delay. Our party of seven required two rooms (5 adults and 2 kids), these were allocated on different floors. However on check-in , we requested the two rooms on the same floor, this was not a problem and was done instantly. The porter was very friendly and gave us information on the hotels facilities. There is a diner attached to the hotel that is excellent value and we had breakfast there every morning. The hotel has an arrangement with the Theatre Diner, which is nearby, to provide room service. We availed of this twice and it was excellent value, a portion for one would do two people adequately. Food nice and hot upon delivery.
No problem with this hotel would recommend this to anyone and would stay here again. We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square twice and this was excellent value, however we had a bad experience at TGI Fridays on 5th Avenue. Very expensive, food not great, and the wait to be seated long for the poor service that we received.
Anyone travelling with a large party would be well advised to use the service obtained by the Hotel for airport transfers. The driver took 7 passengers with 8 large cases and 3 hand luggage sized cases with no problem, rate very reasonable - 130 dollars.
We went to Central Park for ice skating. It was a great day out, excellent value. There was markets at Central Park, great value and it passed a few hours looking at the produce.
We visited the Empire State Building and would advise to avail of the fast track that was being sold by Sales Reps on the street in the surrounding area of the Builiding. It saved us hours of queuing and meant we had more time to visit other tourist attractions.

After we had our horrible experience at the Hotel Carter we found this diamond in the rough.

located 3 blocks from Times Square on 42nd street, this place is very affordable (at the right time of year). They have their own parking garage for guests and it doesn’t cost any extra to park with them.

The rooms are basic... nothing more then you want, and nothing less then you need. They are big enough to easily fit 4 people and luggage.

I have not gone into the pool myself... but I have felt the water and it didn’t give me that gross chlorine feeling... and didn’t smell bad either.

I would HIGHLY suggest the Travel Inn Hotel for the budget traveler... if your dates are flexible.

Room Tip: Ask to be put in a room further away from the train tracks to cut down on that noise
