The place was clean, the staff was very friendly and eager to help, and the price/location were great. Also their fitness center was nice and free! Free weights, machines, and cardio equipment. Space was confined but who cares as long as they have the equipment I need.

The only complaints was the room was a bit dated as far as curtains and some of the furniture. But that is no big deal.

The only other problem is the room was kind of warm and not sure if the AC was working correctly. It was not that bad just had to sleep with no covers on. I am warm natured. Wife had no problems so maybe it was just me :)

Also you had to pay a fee for the business center.

Check in was quick and very professional. Room was very clean, beds were so comfy especially after a long day of walking. Air worked great. Great views and two blocks to Grand Central. Would definately stay again. You wont regret it here!

We stayed for a week at the end of May in The New York Helmsley. It was perfect from start to finish. We checked in with no problems, the staff on reception were most polite and friendly. Our room was on the 22nd Floor, spotlessly clean, and quiet, we heard NYPD sirens sometimes, but other than that no noise, and i' m a light sleeper. The beds were like heaven, so comfy and the linens were really fab.

The bathroom was clean, no overly luxurious but clean is good enough for me. We did have a problem with our toilet overflowing,but to be fair to the staff, they had someone fix this problem right away.

Anthony , one of the doormen in the lobby was most helpful, and nothing was too big a problem for him. All the staff we came in contact with were helpful,friendly and polite. They even looked up different shops online for us, without as much as a moments hesitation. We didnt have any meals at the hotel, there was a deli right next door, which was good value for breakfast, so we used that, and ate out the rest of the time.

It was so nice to come back to the quiet restful atmosphere of the hotel in the evenings, after a day out sight-seeing and shopping, we were so glad we chose this location away from the madness of times square, yet it was only a few minutes walk away. There is a subway station about 3 mins walk away, times square, empire state building, and many other attractions within minutes walk. There are several pharmacies within minutes walk.

I hope to return to New York before the end of the year, and will most definately stay at the New York Helmsley again, its absolutely perfect, and we couldnt fault it, for service, value,cleanliness ,and perfect location.

I spent five nights at The Helmsley and have no complaints at all about the cleanliness of the room or the friendliness, helpfulness, and efficiency of the staff. As is typical in an older hotel, there weren't enough electrical outlets in convenient places. I had to unplug the tv to plug in my computer. (But that was ok with me since I almost never turn on a tv set anyway.) An adjustable chair would have been nice so that I wouldn't have had to sit on a pillow to be high enough to use the computer comfortably, but that also is not unusual in hotels. Although I personally prefer locations a bit farther west (ideally within a block of a subway station on the 1,2,3 line) and with a wider variety of restaurants close by, I would not hesitate to stay at the Helmsley again. Being relatively close to Grand Central Station was good, and the WIFI at the Helmsley was reliable and pretty fast. (It was also free, of course. I won't stay in a hotel that doesn't provide free net connection, either wireless or wired, in all rooms.) I ate breakfast in the restaurant twice (ate down the street at Starbucks the other mornings) and ate a light meal in the bar one night. Both the restaurant and the bar were pricey but with good food, comfortable atmosphere, and very friendly waiters. One last point that sounds trivial but can be important if you're ever in a hurry: The elevators at the Helmsley are great. Often in hotels of that size you have to wait forever for an elevator: even though there appear to be plenty, they all seem to be on the first floor when you're on the thirtieth or whatever. I don't know how the Helmsley programs its elevators, but one always seemed to appear immediately when you pushed the button. I found that a nice touch. All in all, I enjoyed my stay at the Helmsley.
