“Six Nights at Westin New York Grand Central”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

We spent six nights at the hotel. Was somewhat concerned as there were so many negative reviews. We stayed from December 20 with check out on December 26. Had a corner view room on the 37th floor. Partial view of Empire State Building and offices. Elevators worked quite fast and never had to wait as have heard previously. Found if you called housekeeping before leaving hotel to go out you could be sure and have your room clean upon your return. I had no problem being recognized as SPG Gold at the front desk. Requested a refrigerator be brought up and it was there within ten minutes. Unfortunately, the lobby is extremely small...not really a lobby at all. Very little seating. Went into the bar only once and service was fine. Ate all other meals out. Went to Pershing Square for breakfast on three mornings. Would recommend you eat breakfast there at least one time. There is a great market at Grand Central Station to purchase cheeses, breads, fruits....

Room Tip: Higher the better due to noise. We had 3724

Great location in a great city. Recent Westin acquisition. It is a newly remodeled older hotel close to Grand Central Station on 42nd between 3rd and 4th street. We had a fun view of the Chrysler building which is just across the street. Good service and a great staff. Watch your door, though, to make sure it closes tightly. It is a short walk to 5th Avenue and all the shopping. A bit further to the Library and Bryant Park. If you are a good walker it is even easy to walk to Times Square and all the shows.

Newly renovated Westin with typical Westin amenities - very comfortable bed.

The shower was also good. Quick elevators for such.a big hotel.

Convenient location to get anywhere in Manhattan - near grand central subway.

The toilets were the loudest in any hotel I've stayed. I am a light sleeper, was woken up by the flushing sound from other rooms. Better insulation or quieter toilets?

I stayed in this hotel about 2 weeks ago when I was in New York for a short 2 day business trip. The price and location were both fine. The room was clean and quiet and in line with what you expect from a Westin. The hotel is about 2 blocks east of Grand Central Station on 42nd Street and is easy and safe walking to the Broadway shows, etc. Don't worry about finding a hotel on Broadway. This is a very nice hotel but it is outside the hustle and bustle and craziness of Times Square and the surrounding area. You can easily walk from this hotel to Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, St. Patricks Cathedral, etc. The bed and bathroom were clean and of high quality. The TV in the room was nice but the battery in the remote was dead. I called downstairs and they had a replacement sent up very quickly. Internet in the room worked fine. I stayed on the 6th floor and that was fine, but I think you might have a good view of the Chrysler building if you had a north facing room on a higher floor. Good luck and enjoy.

Room Tip: You would probably have a nice view of the beautiful Chrysler building if you had a north facing roo...

Full disclosure: I really like Westin hotels but it's all about the heavenly bed and Starbucks coffee in the rooms. Without both of those I wouldn't be so keen on Westins.

The Good: The rooms are larger than most Manhattan hotels and they are clean and in good condition. The exercise room is also large and well equipped. Good location 1 block from Grand Central Station. The front desk staff were very friendly. Several of our south facing rooms had nice views to the Empire State Building.

The Not-So-Good: Only 3 of our 7 rooms were available by the 4 o'clock check-in time and no refund or discount was offered. The water temperature in the shower wavered between scalding and cool, regardless of where you set the knob and the water pressure was very weak. Some of our rooms looked into offices.

The Devil in the Details: Across the board, Westin hotels seem to be challenged by the details. The ones at this hotel-no washcloths in the room, three coffee packs one day, one coffee pack the next, one sugar and creamer pack regardless of the number of coffees, maintenance issues like a window that wouldn't close all the way and a leaky shower faucet-are pretty indicative of the lack of attention to detail at the Westin hotels I have visited.

Even with these challenges, I would definitely stay here again. As I said, I love those heavenly beds and at the end of the day, a hotel that allows for a good night's sleep wins with me!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor with Empire State Building views.

We had a great stay at The Westin Grand Central. We had our grandchildren with us which meant lots of extra luggage, strollers, etc. The people were very helpful. Check-in was very smooth thanks to Bernardo at the front desk. The room was on the 25th floor. It was very easy to get to with the elevators and the kids liked the view. The room was clean and inviting.

.This was our first time staying at a hotel that was not in the immediate Time Square area. I definitely preferred this hotel and its location. It was not far to walk to Time Square and Rockefeller Center. It was not over-crowded like the Time Square area which was good since we had small children with us.

Check-out was easy....again thanks to Bernardo. We parked around the corner which cost $30 with a coupon.

Everything about the trip went very, very well due to the ideal location of The Westin and the smooth, efficient service of its people. The price of the room was considerable less than if we stayed closer to Time Square.....we put the difference toward purchases at Toys R Us....so everybody was happy....especially the kids.

I will definitely stay at The Westin Grand Central in the future.
