“Really nice place to stay near Penn Station”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014 via mobile

Hotel doesn't look like a Marriott, has personality. Almost a European feel. Not inexpensive, but not bad for Manhattan. Only problem is, like many older manhattan buildings has that appearance of less than clean. Dirt stuck to old grout crud on the windows, chips off the multiple layers of paint applied over the years, etc. But it's New York. Great location. Pretty. I would stay again.

The room we had at this hotel was really nice - elegant, comfortable and quiet (we had a court-side room).
The only odd thing were that the curtains didn't close - they were only for show!
Also, if you want tea or coffee making facilities, you need to ask for them. And then ask them how to use it! No kettle, just a coffee maker which was complicated to use!

The staff were really nice and helpful (we had a bit of an issue when we first got there, but the manager was great at sorting it all out).

Great location and the look of the hotel didn't disappoint, although the standard rooms are small they are well equipped and clean. Bar was biggest disappointment as music was at night club level so prevented that relaxing drink after a tiring day. Note there is no tea/coffee facilities in the room.

Our holiday to NY and this hotel was for 5 nights.
Fantastic grand entrance/lobby to the hotel, staff very nice and the bedroom very clean.
But what a disappointment when entering our double room! Looked as if it was a single with a double bed, and when opening the window blinds expecting to have some light, it was to see a wall and a very large hotel air conditioning unit. I did ask for another room as I was not happy but with no success. I don't know if it was because we were on the second floor but I could hear water gurgling through the pipes from our bathroom and air-conditioning system constantly.
After reading some other people's reviews it does look as if we were just very unlucky with our room.

I loved the stay at the Carlton! The atmosphere is charged with suggestions of a glorious past that is kept up to a good level nothwithstanding the attire of the doorman... (if only he could wear a less preposterous hat...). Comfortable bed, clean, pleasant room. Very attentive service. Only disappointment was the view from the room. I had asked before our arrival if they could give us a room with a nice view being the first time in NYC for my children. I asked again at check in but we ended up facing a very sad building.

Room Tip: High floors, far from the Lifts

What a find! I was excited to stay at an Autograph one of my firsts. Loved the style, rooms, hallways, and design. So chic! Felt like a luxury apartment cozy but so well appointed. OMG and the Molton Brown amenities are definitely in my top 3 favorites, fantastic choice. Kindly helped us store bags and charge phones for a late train. I noticed live music at the hotel restaurant and cool loungey lobby music it made the ambiance artistic hip and trendy and I loved it! And the GREAT SMELL I don't know if you do it purposely but the elevators always smelled refreshing. I don't know how you do it in a busy city like NY but it didn't go unnoticed. Loved being close to Flatiron and would be happy to return.

I stayed at the Carlton for a weekend taking my father to a ball game. The hotel is very nice- especially for a NYC hotel. The room was not small on NYC standards and the upkeep was excellent. We drove in and the text in for your car service made it very convenient. When we were headed back to the hotel from our morning out, I just texted them when we got on the subway and the car was waiting when we arrived. We only called down for something once, a bucket of ice, and it was delivered very fast. The bed was comfortable and hotel was quiet.

Room Tip: The rooms that do not include a view (ours was just off an air shaft) are quieter.
