“Perfect Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012

Stayed here in November. Great service, SPACIOUS room ( i mean this is NYC) and centrally located. The person below who complained it's not "near times square" should stay in a hotel in times square. I would stay here every time i need a hotel in NYC.

When you walk into the Carlton, the lobby impresses. It is modern and funky. The staff were all very friendly and helpful from the doorman, to the desk staff, to the concierge. The hotel is old but you'd never know it from the ground floor, you have to wait until you get upstairs.

The hallways are very narrow (it is an old hotel, after all) but they are painted a dark colour and are dimly lit. That makes them look even gloomier and is in stark contrast with the lobby. The paint is also badly scrapped and chipped.

The rooms are small but with nice linens. The bathrooms have Moulton & Brown soaps, which is a nice touch. My big complaint was with the window: it was warped and wouldn't close properly. There was such a draft blowing through that the blinds were moving all night. My partner was kept awake most of the night from partiers on the street perhaps because the windows were not up to par.

Another odd thing is that there are no ice machines. You have to call to get someone to deliver it to your room.

The best part of this hotel is its location. We were within a 1/2 hour walk of many of our destinations.

I found a deal on this hotel on the Internet. At the price I paid, it was well worth it. If I had to pay full price, however, I would probably choose somewhere else.

The rooms are spacious, for NYC, and the lobby elegant. Nicely appointed rooms, and competent service.

Highly recommend it for families travelling together.

Enjoyed the Carlton's quieter Madison Ave, location close to many restaurants and less touristy. The rooms are nice and the lobby environment very pleasant. The restaurant has good atmosphere but the food is not overwhelming.

Arrived when hotel not full and given upgrade from basic smaller room booked at bargain on line rate to very nice queen in quiet location by exceptionally nice staff. Very comfortable bed, nice linens and toiletries, good temperature control in very tastefully decorated room. Murray Hill location has many advantages and for those willing to take subway stop on useful North South Line for many sites of interest only a block away on Park Avenue.

Room Tip: Most basic room is small but very comfortable, too. If one doesn't plan to spend a lot of time i...

The Carlton is a great warm NYC hotel. You will not feel overwhelmed as you might in a huge hotel - it is sized just right and it not too edgy, not too commercial, nor too staid. The service is outstanding, the rooms are large, elegant, quiet and comfortable. You will feel like you are in a high-end classic NYC establishment, beautiful old marble, heavy wood doors, well-appointed bathrooms, attentive staff, and a good warm feeling all around. A moment in the lobby will tempt you to grab a paper, an apple, or a drink from the adjacent bar and want to linger, sinking into one of the easy chairs and watching the goings on. We stayed there a number of times this year, once with our family for a weekend and also on business. Each time we felt perfectly at home. The neighborhood is a great one, away from the hustle of midtown but immediately close nearby.

Room Tip: There are fabulous rooms facing the beautiful courtyard on Madison Avenue.

We spent a week at the Carlton over the holidays and had a wonderful experience. The hotel staff were helpful and very eager to assist in any way they could (for example my luggage was lost by the airline and the front desk was very communicative regarding the status they were hearing from airline appointed delivery service). The room was lovely and pretty spacious for NYC standards with a fabulous bathroom. It was a great place to wind down after a busy day out and about in the city. I was pleasantly surprised how quite the rooms were at night. Free/easy to access wifi is a plus given some hotels charge $10 a day. I would highly recommend this hotel to my friends and family and will be staying here again on our next cisit to the city.
