“Some great things - unforgivable neglect of basics”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

Good things

- Great location
- Big rooms
- Lots of light and stuff to see in upper rooms (see photo)
- Staff pleasant (though with the usual expectation that even a non-service should be tipped. Not blaming the hotel; that's New York in general)
- Cheap (for New York)
- Quiet (my room was adjacent to the lifts, and this wasn't a problem)

Bad things

- Deep down filth. See photos. If the space under the bed had been cleaned once in the last year I'd be surprised. I only checked because my eyes were streaming. It really was disgusting.
- Rip off broadband. 10 bucks a day for "high speed" internet. I tested it: sub-0.5 megs at one point, 1.2 megs max. "Help desk", based in Seattle, said "oh, I can see lots of people are using it, like that was just something I just had to deal with
- Not enough lifts. See other reviewers' comments.
- Tired decor, scuffed furniture
- If you were on the top floor, you'd have to travel 17 floors to get ice (in THOSE lifts!)

I'm fine with the lift situation, helpfully pointed out by other reviewers before I booked. That won't change - it would be a multi-million dollar building project, and that's not going to happen. I'm not fine with the broadband shame. If you're going to use broadband costing cents-per-day at wholesale as an opportunity to sting guests, that's bad enough. But when it's advertised as high-speed but isn't good enough to stream even a low-def video - that's not acceptable. Fix it.

The deep down dirt: I notice that the general manager has been good about coming on tripadvisor to explain things. But god knows what he's going to say about the filthy carpets. Because there can be absolutely no excuse. So don't bother explaining it. Just fix it for future guests.

Dear Jon_Verse,
Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at the Belvedere Hotel. I appreciate your feedback and apologize that we didn’t meet your expectations.
As you mentioned, we were having an unusual amount of internet usage over the past 2 weeks which affected our service. We immediately identified the issue and increased our capacity to meet the growing demand in the hotel for internet access. We charge for this service as do many hotels in midtown Manhattan and our pricing is very competitive. The cost for this service is substantial due to the speed and capacity needed to meet the high demand of hundreds of users per day, and in many cases, each using several devises simultaneously. Additionally, we are always upgrading our system to keep up with constant changing technology.
I will make no excuses for the dust that was found under the bed. We do deep cleaning in the rooms every 3 months which includes moving all the furniture and shampooing the entire carpet. However, the condition of your room is unacceptable. I will be addressing this with the appropriate managers and staff to ensure this is corrected.
We have made many improvements in the hotel over the past year including replacement of all mattresses and duvets. We have upgraded all the televisions in the hotel to 32” HD televisions with expanded service including HBO, ESPN, ESPN2 and many other premium channels. We have already replaced 90% of the furniture in the hotel and this project will be completed by mid-2012.
I thank you for bringing these issues to my attention. I take this and all guest comments very seriously and I’m disappointed we didn’t exceed your expectations as we do so many of our guests. I hope you will give us another try if ever returning to New York City. Best regards.

“We Stay here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012 via mobile

We chose this hotel because of an excellent web special price. Now we will go back special or not. The rooms were clean and the staff was excellent. We had read bad things about the elevator waits...but we stayed on the very top floor and had zero issues...yes we stayed on the weekend. Chose this hotel...then worry about something else.

“New York Gem!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012

We recently stayed at The Belvedere for four nights and it was wonderful. We stayed in a Double/Double room.It was spacious and it was great having the little kitchen. Our room was not renovated but it was still really good.On the downside the window was a bit draughty and the bathroom a bit dated but the rest was great. Our room was cleaned spotlessly everyday. The beds were extremely comfortable. The staff at reception and throughout the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel was superb.Five minute walk from Times square.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. It was terrific value in a superb location. Some other things we found worth doing were the Downtown hop on/hop off tour which stopped at all the well known NYC sights. The Frick Collection was also well worth going to see.A trip to the top of the Rock was also a must.Super views of NYC but get there early in the morning to avoid the queues and save yourself sometime to see other sights.

“A great find, will stay again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012

We were really impressed with everything about this hotel. It is in a great location, within a block of a subway station for the blue line trains and two of the redline. A reasonable distance to walk to Times Square and very closes to the theatres with handy local shops and excellent restaurants very close by, Restaurant Row is a block or two away although we ate twice at the excellent Delta Grill on the same block.
The place was very clean, the room was a nice size and very comfortable with nice touches like a fridge and microwave, and safe, Wolfgang Puck coffee and Penhaligan (they supply the Queen) toiletries. The staff were excellent and very helpful and freindly and there is a handy gift shop down stairs. There were complaints from other reviewers about the lifts, especially on the lower floors as they tend to be full by the time they reach you but people dont realise there are also lifts at either end of the corridors, you dont have to just use the central pair.
I cant recommend it enough and have included it in the NY guide I write.

Room Tip: Apparently the better rooms are on the higher floors but I am sure they are all good. A tip if trave...

“Comfy, convenient, and cozy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2012 via mobile

We were married this week in NYC and stayed at the Belvedere .. Very nice to have microwave and fridge in the room..great location .. All the staff were sooo helpful ! Caesar and Keno especially. Chris the concierge gave us an exact printout on how to take subway to see Traces. When I got home I thought I had list a necklace and Keno was kind and helpful. I did find it but it was cool that when I called back he was as happy as I was.. Best stay ever! Great soft pillowtop beds.. Get the executive king rooms. Very nice!! Highly recommended!!
