“Great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

We were looking for a good cost-benefit in NYC. That's usually a hard task, but this hotel managed to deliver.

Location
Very good location if you want to stay midtown. Would not recommend for downtown lovers. Close to numerous subway stations the hotel is on 44th street within walking distance to Times Square, 5th Ave, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, The MoMA and other turistic sites. It is also very close to a number of very good bars and restaurants (but in NYC that is pretty common).

Service (Concierge, Food, Cleaning, Internet) The Algonquin has a good set of services: rooms are pretty clean and neat and free internet. We never tried the food there, but the restaurant left us with a very good impression.

Rooms (Size, Decoration) Rooms are medium sized (for NYC standards), which means that some travellers might find the rooms a little bit small. But do not expect large rooms in NYC. Beds are just ok, nothing special. Bathrooms are actually big and comfortable.

Finally, The Algonquin Hotel was a really good experience and we would definitely recommend the place.

Hotel is located in side street 2 blocks from Times Square. As most other NYC hotels, rooms are small, without any view and expensive, but staff made up for some of the shortcomings of the architecture by being very helpful and forthcoming.

Green Features: Did not really become aware that hotel had eco friendly practices

The place is historic, quaint, and very convenient to Time Square and Broadway. The staff was as kind and friendly as any B&B you can stay. Most have been there for many years and you meet them once and they remember you (and your family) the entire stay. The front desk staff was so helpful when an online reservation was crossed up. The bell man provided us assistance and directions. The bar tender made incredible drinks for our tasting (some didn't make it onto the bill). The breakfast staff were awesome and did the extra to make sure we enjoyed our meals.

The cost of the hotel is a bit more and if you are looking for the traditional, big city hotel then don't stay here. However if you are looking for a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the history and ambiance along with making new friends (staff and other guests) then do so. So what the rooms are smaller than most, that isn't why you go to NYC.

Highly recommend and I will be back.

Room Tip: Rooms can be loud if you are on street side but the view is nice. If you are serious about sleep as...

VERY RACIST, lack of customer service and privacy... During my stay I've experienced very rude staff members also a manager/supervisor had the nerve to walk into our room stating that he didn't know if we were in the room or not. It shouldn't matter if we were in the room or not we were paying for the nights we stayed there. They have no right to walk into anyone's room to see if they are there or not it's none of their business plus it was three females in the room at the time getting dressed we could have been naked...NO PRIVACY OR RESPECT AT ALL!!! The worst part is the racistism, as our trip was coming to an end and we were leaving the hotel a staff member actually said to us "it's a privilege to stay here" what does that have to do with anything we payed for our stay. The staff members looked and treated us very different I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone if you are planning a trip to New York stay anywhere but here it's not worth it at all!!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent visit to the Algonquin Hotel. We are sorry that you did not have a favorable stay. I want to assure you that personalized service is a number one priority at the Algonquin. We are the longest operating hotel in New York City and have been a home away from home to many travelers since 1902. We take pride in delivering a consistent level of service. Safety is everyone’s responsibility at the Algonquin Hotel we ensure the safety of our guests, their belongings, associates and the building. This is the second time I've stayed at this beautiful hotel. It's tucked into a side street near Times Square, yet is calm and quiet and away from the fray. The rooms are gorgeous and the beds are comfortable. They have New Yorker cartoons on the doors and cat in the lobby. It's elegantly furnished in a style reminiscent of the jazz age but in a modern and beautiful interpretation. The staff is friendly and helpful. I just love this place. I had breakfast there with a New Yorker friend who saw it for the first time and now is going to send her friends when they come to town. Highly, highly recommended. Also very close to a good diner and a 24 hr drug story, which is helpful for travelers.

It's a very short walk to beautiful Bryant Park and the New York Public Library and a block from the Center for Photography.

A note: It's not a "kids" hotel, but I think children would really enjoy it because of the lobby, and the memorabilia and the cat. It's one of a kind.

Room Tip: Ask for the back of the hotel--it's apparently quieter (but both times I stayed there, it was ab...

Stayed in this charming hotel near Times Square for five nights in MAy 2014 for my husbands 50th.
Lovely welcoming quaint hotel with tons of charm and sophistication. Glad we chose here rather than the modern hotels. On arrival bottle of sparkling water, birthday cake, card and fruit. Lovely touch.
Staff unobtrusive but available to help if required.
Room was lovely. Decor elegant. Stayed first night in queen room facing Main Street but couldn't sleep for the noise. Asked for a move the following morning to quieter room and this was granted.
Lounge was classy and welcoming.
Close to Times Square but far enough away to avoid the madness.
Loved this place and would return in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back if your a light sleeper.

This hotel is right in the middle of Grand central and times square. Really nice rooms.. a little cosy..
The staff are genuinely lovely. Christian in the blue bar deserves a mention for his "ol' fashion"
One point of note.. the hotel has just been taken over by the Marriot. So computers are a little flaky. The business centre was impossible to print a pdf.. so run to fedex instead where you pay by the minute.

Would definitely stay here again and again.
