If you are looking for a nice hotel in mid town, consider the Algonquin. The rooms are nicely renovated, but they are small. If you have a short stay, as we did, it didn't matter to us. The rooms are nicely appointed and very clean. The flood and drink prices are high if you are planning to eat and drink there, but with so many options in the area, you can easily find other options. The only negative for me was the complimentary coffee and tea service in the lobby in the mornings. No cream for your coffee or tea...only milk??? And, Lipton tea bags. I had to walk across the street to Gregory's. The parfait and bagel and lox we had for breakfast were great, however. I would stay there again.
