“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

The Algonquin has an excellent location in New York, just a few blocks away from Broadway shows, shops and great restaurants. Although the rooms are a bit small, they are cozy and comfortable. The only negative point is the carpet, that is not really a nice option for allergic people.

If you like space in your hotel -- spacious lobby, big rooms, wide halls -- this hotel is not for you. But if you like being in the middle of the city, with a lobby full of soft chairs to enjoy a hot snack after a night on the town, with a very attentive staff, and cozy rooms, this is the hotel for you. Bathrooms were clean and modern; bed was very comfortable, TV screens were big, free coffee downstairs in the morning with a selection of newspapers, the heaters in the room were the best, and everytime we walked out the front door there was a cab waiting for us. For us, it was the right place to stay.

As a Marriott rewards member, I decided to try this place out. I found it very nice - small room, but clean & seemed to have recently been remodeled. But, here's the thing - the new window treatments used in the rooms do not block out all angles of viewing. I was mostly in the room at night, but when I woke up one morning and people from a workplace were looking right in the room. Be careful.

To borrow a phrase from Dorothy Parker...

I was fortunate to spend three nights at the Algonquin earlier this month with my college roommate whom I haven't seen in five years. Our room was small -- as they usually are in vintage hotels. The bed (we could only get a queen with my Marriott points) was incredibly comfortable, the shower, hot and powerful. SCORE.

I found the front desk staff amenable and helpful except for Matilda, who was catty and aloof. (For those of you unaware of the Algonquin's history, Matilda, is the resident feline.)

While the cocktail lounge was a throwback to the New Yorker-Roundtable era, the food in the dining room was rather disappointing. I found the prix fixe menu wanting, the dishes oversalted and the desserts unremarkable. Service, however, was gracious.

And you cannot beat the location of the hotel. The 42nd Street/Broadway subway stop is close, there's a Duane Reade drug store for emergency toothpaste runs and Time Square is at your disposable. I will gladly return to this hotel for my next stay in the Big Apple!

The f but they usually are at older hotels.

Our first stay at the recently renovated Algonquin was just fine, but not great. When we booked months ago during renovation and prior to reopening, we expected a room to sleep three as the web site indicated the same would be available. When we checked in, we were told the hotel had no rooms with two beds and instead were put a queen room as small as any I've ever stayed in. Hotel staff relocated us to a slightly larger accessible room and brought an incredibly uncomfortable rollaway bed, but were unwilling to help with a second room to accomadate us. Although location is ideal and finishes are nice, the small rooms and higher than average rates will keep me from returning. The Royalton across the street is a better choice.

GBudge, General Manager at The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection, responded to this review, November 30, 2012
The Algonquin’s recent guts to décor renovation addressed many concerns and included updated bathrooms and technology it did not change guest room size. The Algonquin is a boutique style hotel and many of the rooms are not large while comfortable and equipped with all items needed to ensure comfort throughout a stay.

During the 2012 renovation the hotel upgraded finishes and furniture in guest rooms, corridors and bathrooms. Public spaces were given a fresh look with comfortable furniture, while maintaining the iconic wood finishes and millwork. Newly created areas were added during the renovation for guest comfort such as the Fitness Center and Business Center both available for guest use complimentary 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Based on guest feedback the hotel added a self service ice machine and 24 hour complimentary coffee station. Each guest room has a large back lit photo of New York City past connecting the 110 year history of the Algonquin with the 21st Century. In tribute to The New Yorker magazine, founded at the Algonquin in 1925, guest corridors feature framed historic magazine covers as artwork as well as sections of the hotels former wall vinyl printed with New Yorker cartoons.

A pretty unique, or at least different hotel by Marriott Standards, in a very central location in mid town Manhattan. Walking distance to times square, madison av and 5th av, but not on a super busy street itself which is nice. Recently redecorated by Marriott and now marketed as an Autograph Collection hotel. Its certainly no ordinary Marriott hotel, this is boutique style, good small cozy restaurant, trendy and cool bar and very personal well decorated rooms with a very engaging service.

General standard of the hotel - very good to excellent
Standard of the rooms - excellent (although quite small rooms)
Lobby - small but cozy and good for meeting colleagues / friends
Restaurant - small, cozy, good food and good service
Gym - excellent
Service - very good to excellent (especially the servicing of the rooms was top notch. Seems they have a separate lady taking care of each floor)

So, in conclusion, I would absolutely recommend this hotel if you are looking for a smaller, boutique style, high end hotel in midtown. Probably more a hotel for a weekend away with your partner or for business (at least the rooms I have seen are probably not for a trip with the kids). This hotel is in direct competition with The Chatwal (Starwood) which is also nearby.
