“Excellent Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We stayed from 02/10/12 to 09/10/12. The Affinia shelburne was the perfect location for our honeymoon. Close to the chrysler building and Grand Central station. Housekeeping was superb and the concierge very very helpful with directions to attractions that we requested. Would stay again, very clean and friendly. Thank you.

First impressions are everything and upon walking into our room at the Affinia Shelburne, I exclaimed to my husband how impressed I immediately was - especially since this hotel was fairly affordable.

Pros:
-room was large compared to most in NYC
-really nice lines on the bed and soft towels in the shower
-tasteful, modern decor
-short walk to the train station and 6 subway line
-friendly service
-room appeared to be recently updated
-toiletries provide were high quality and instead of using miniature bottles, there were large bottles mounted in the shower - very eco-friendly

Cons:
-traffic noise. I'm sure all NYC hotel have this, but after staying in a few others, the noise was especially loud there. I'm guessing it had to do with being on busy Lexington Ave. The hotel does provide you with earplugs though.
-shower needed re-caulked. There was some black mold in the shower caulk, and from having that same issue at home, I know it's a fairly easy fix to rip out the caulk and add new. This was the only sign of wear and tear in the room and bathroom though.

Tourist Tip:
-If you are traveling as a tourist and want to check out all the touristy NYC highlights, it's about a mile or so walk to Central Park, about 15 min walk to Rockefeller Center, and 20 minute walk to Times Square but they are all easily accesible by Subway

Despite the few cons that I think you should be aware of, I'd still recommend staying here if you are looking for a wonderful hotel on a fairly moderate budget in New York. Consider ourselves new Affinia fans.

This NYC hotel is getting it SO right in every way. There's the unbeatable location: Grand Central, Times Square, 5th ave shopping all within walking distance. No closet-size rooms here but good size rooms with plenty of space to put your suitcase and shopping out of the way. Great comfortable beds and wonderful room amenities that ensure a good night's sleep. Wonderful toiletries in the bathroom. Fantastic rooftop bar in summer season with stunning views of mid-town. Wonderful staff (front desk, doormen, concierge) who all go out of their way to help. Well-equipped fitness room. Cosy design and interior make for a "homey" experience.
I used to shop around for hotels when going to NYC, but since I found this hotel, no longer need to. I will keep on going back whenever I'm in NYC - this hotel is super. Highly recommended!

I got the Shelburne on Priceline for a good deal. I didn't quite know what to expect, as I hadn't heard of Affinia before, but being close to Grand Central was helpful for what was just an overnight. I was bowled over by the top notch service and the room quality - so much that I sought out an Affinia property (the Dumont) for my next trip. Rare Bar and Grill has reasonable (for New York) drink prices and a fun staff.

After planning a trip to NYC with my parents for almost 6 months, we were not disappointed with our stay at this property. I had travelled to NYC previously and had a tour of the property and room types with a a friendly DM. This helped us decide which room type to confirm. We requested a room with balcony and were told several times it was not guaranteed due to the limited number. However after a long journey from Australia, we were so happy to see they had gone the extra mile and secured us a room with balcony.. An absolutely amazing room, spacious, clean and very comfortable. Lifts were always busy and slow, but this was understandable as the hotel is era and was a busy period in NY (When is NY ever not busy?!) If you are looking for a property that is central, more spacious than a Sheraton or Hilton room, this hotel is well priced and very fresh. We were so happy here and thank the staff very much. Highly recommended and will stay here again.

Room Tip: Higher floor, One bedroom deluxe suites have a balcony (only a limited number)

The wife and I needed a room on short notice to meet some friends for a late-night foray in Manhattan. The Shelburne was the closest and most reasonably priced option to our destination, and with only a 2-day notice, there weren't a ton of choices at a price we could afford. I wasn't thrilled about dropping almost 3 bills on a room for one night, but it's Manhattan, so what can you do?

The room was much larger than I expected, and very nicely decorated. The bathroom was a decent size as well. Everything was clean and tidy. TV was a monster flat-screen. There was a mini-fridge packed with beer, wine, and liquor, and bottled water and various food items (at horrendous prices, of course).

The staff was friendly, courteous, and attentive. There is a bar downstairs attached to the hotel. Drink prices are what you would expect for a hotel bar (high), but it seemed like a decent place and was very busy on a Friday night.

The parking is valet only, and the cost is $55 per day. That's actually not a terrible price for parking in midtown, especially since you don't have to do any work to find a spot. You can find cheaper parking, but it will come at the cost of added hassle and time.

The Shelburne is walking distance from The Ginger Man, which is an excellent bar specializing in craft and imported beer (especially Belgian brews).

We stayed here as a family of 4 (including a 3 year old and 5 month old baby) for 6 days. The main reason we chose this hotel is because of the kitchen and living area and separate bedroom as with a baby and the preparing of bottles - to do all of that in a tiny hotel room with just a bed (and washing bottles in a bathroom) was not for me.
Firstly we arrived at 9am (after an 18 hour flight with 2 kids) and were exhausted - check in was at 3pm but Pranisha (I think) at the front desk asked us to go and grab some breakfast and when we returned she would make a plan.
By 10am the room was ready - it was a standard one bedroom - not the deluxe that we booked but I didnt care as we were exhausted. The room was good on 7th floor. Spacious with large bedroom, nice kitchen area and nice bathroom.
The only issue we had in this room was internet access. It kept dropping and my husband needed it for work and so it didn't suit. We were then moved on the second day and that was to a deluxe one bedroom on the 13th floor. The room was much nicer with a bigger living area (including dining room table), bigger kitchen and nicer view (Empire state building).
The bed goes down as one of the most comfortable we have ever slept on and it was a king size as we had requested. The hotel provided a crib for the baby but the graco pack and play had no mattress and so this was changed for the white metal type. My 3 year old slept on the sofa bed which was fine. A baby bath was also provided for.
Issues:
1. The bath towels are way too small - were fine for my 3 year old.
2. On the one day the toilet was not cleaned properly and we had to call the cleaners back.
3. The biggest issue we had was the heating / aircon or lack thereof. New York was getting cold and no matter what temperature we adjusted the aircon to the air it blew was cold. We called maintenance (sam) who arrived with a tiny portable heater whose legs were falling off and were told that the aircon system in the whole hotel has been switched off as some guests complain of heat and others are cold and he cannot accommodate all. This is unacceptable in a big hotel not to have any heating or cooling facilities. The heater that was brought then blew the plug point which then could not be fixed and so we had no heating during our stay.
4. Bathrobes and slippers in the hote would be a nice touch.

Apart from this we were happy. We ordered room service for our 3 year old from Rare and they were very accommodating - even boiled eggs and toast at 7pm.
The hotel is great for families due to room size. The staff are good but we felt we were really just left alone to our own devices and were not really 'checked on'.
I did however complete the questionnaire and got an immediate response.
I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Deluxe one bedroom
