Decent and safe location, nice desk clerks. Very minimal - clean but very small and bare. You would think that even with a very low budget it could be updated to at least seem more cheerful. But if all you need is a place to put your head and ambience is not at all an issue, this is the place.

The location here is hard to beat for the money. For maybe $150/night, you are mere minutes from the 79th Street subway station, and blocks from Central Park. However, the rooms are dated. The hallways have a funny smell and the rooms are old, but other than that, they are clean and the beds are very comfortable. Don't forget to bring your own shampoo and conditioner, as they don't provide any at the hotel. Service staff very kind, and they allowed us to store our luggage in their basement for the day before we took off for Penn Station. Overall good value!

Room Tip: 165/166 (adjoining rooms) was good

As it says in the title, it's all a matter of what you want. You want fancy, all included service with space and gourmet food? Forget it! The Riverside Tower is all about economy bedding in a city that doesn't give its citizens an apartment for less than $1.500 a month.

What you get is a clean room with your private, clean bathroom (not necessarily included in NYC!), a TV with some 12 channels (to you business travellers: There are no news channels at all, including, of course, international) and enough space to move around and stow your luggage. That's it. The room is cleaned every day and the elevator is quiet enough. But: Bring your own shampoo and shower gel, for some reason there is none at the hotel.

There is one major plus still: The location is good (close to the river in the Upper West Side, we felt extremely safe; plus: Central Park is just a short walk away), subways are close (1 train on 79th or A, C trains at the Museum of Natural History).

I think I have stayed here 7 times in a year. My mother lives a block and a half away but as an adult and her apt not accommodating for guests, I couldn't ask for a better location. Everyone at the desk is polite and answers emails promptly.
I only gave it a 4 for cleanliness tho have never had a "dirty" room because it is old and the rooms small so I find myself wondering how they can even clean the carpet well. It must be difficult to vacuum under the bed etc. But I have never felt the room is dirty. Bathrooms have been upgraded, walls painted and sheets are always clean.
I really hope they don't upgrade it too much or the affordability will go out the window! After all if you are coming to NYC to see the city, eat and shop, who wants to spend all their money on a room?
The single rooms all face the back. Suites face the street (80th street) and doubles face the front, Riverside Park. I have been in all. I think a suite is too small for 4 people as they are trundle beds to accommodate 4 but when traveling to NYC on a budget you have to have an open mind. Ac works fine and higher floors will have less noise (as will the singles that face inward and away from the street).
It's close to the 1/2/3 trains at 79th and 72nd streets and a mere 2 blocks walk gets you to Broadway.
I'll continue to stay here as long as it remains affordable!!

We have stayed here twice on family trips to NY. It is an old building with small cramped rooms but if you are like us you only need a room to sleep and shower. I like the fact that it has an old authentic NY feel to it. Our rooms have been clean & adequate with a small fridge, table & microwave. The location is perfect...right beside Riverside Park & the views are great. Its a lovely neighborhood full of old interesting buildings. Its a quick walk to the subway & a variety of restaurants & stores on Broadway. I enjoy the short walk to Zabar's & having breakfast with the locals. We have been lucky to find a parking spot right in front of the motel but there is a parking garage right across the street. The front desk is always staffed with friendly, helpful people who have steered us to buying theatre tickets, restaurants & directions. There is a small lobby & bathrooms downstairs. The elevators are small & cramped but no problem. I think if you are on a trip to explore the city this a great value & a beautiful location. We will be staying there anytime we return to New York.
