4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Me and my wife Stayed for 5 days in Sanctuary Hotel. The location
is fantastic, near Times Square. The rooms are small but well equiped. The service in general was very good, from the street front door to the bar in penthouse.

We spent six nights at the Sanctuary for our honeymoon and we couldn't have chosen a better hotel!
When we arrived we were shown to our room which was lovely, although unfortunately too small for the amount of luggage we had brought (my fault!). When I enquired whether they had a larger room available they apologised and said that they were fully booked that night but that they could upgrade us to a larger room the following day for the remainder of our stay. They even took me to see a king room to check I was happy with it!
Both the queen and king rooms were both finished to a great standard and although the larger room faced the road, we were on the 8th floor and the noise was not loud enough to be an issue.
The staff were all fantastic and couldn't have done more to help. They even gave us a complimentary bottle of fizz to celebrate our honeymoon.
The location is great for tourists, 2 minutes from Times Square and not much more to the Rockefeller Centre and 5th Avenue shopping. There were a wide range of restaurants in the local area and the food was also great at the hotel's rooftop bar.
All in all, we had a fantastic stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Sanctuary to anyone!

Room Tip: Queen rooms are small (no real wardrobe space or anywhere to store your cases) so if you're stay...

My boyfriend (now fiancé!!) and I stayed at Sanctuary for 4 nights on a recent trip to NYC. From the moment we stepped out of the taxi we received nothing but exceptional service. Jacob on the STAR desk was a fantastic help and ensured we got the best out of our 4 days in the city.

The rooms, although small, are immaculate. The shower is huge and the beds are comfortable. Although so close to Times Square, there is no noise whatsoever.
Breakfast was included in the room rate and is served up on the rooftop bar every morning. The selection is good enough and kept us going until lunch time every day.

The best thing about The Sanctuary is the customer service. One evening, Jacob made us a reservation for dinner before a show we were going to see. However whilst we were getting ready we realised the show started an hour earlier than we thought. We rang down to the STAR desk to ask if they could change our reservation to after the show, which they were more than happy to do so. 5 minutes later we were called back to tell us they had changed the reservation and that they were sending up some room service on the house to keep us going until after the show. Now THAT is great customer service.

The Sanctuary really is your own sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was a fantastic stay and I would recommend the hotel to any of my friends or family if they were travelling to NYC. I know that if we were ever to return to NYC, we would never stay anywhere else.

I found this hotel after trawling through pages of hotels in New York. What a find! Probably best to describe it as a boutique hotel, it's certainly not a faceless chain hotel. The location was perfect, just 2 minutes from Times Square and a metro station.

Our room was 'roadside' on the 4th floor and yes it was possible to hear traffic (especially the horns hooting) but to be honest after a full and busy day it didn't stop us sleeping. Our room was spotless and the bed just so wonderfully comfortable after a busy day walking around the city. The light switches took some getting used to but we soon managed. The shower was really good with plenty of hot water.

Very few NY hotels offer free breakfast and having read some previous reviews complaining about the 'stampede' for food our expectations were quite low. Believe me the breakfast was excellent, with a choice of hot porridge (oatmeal), scrambled eggs & toast + pastries, fruit & cereal there was plenty to start our day off well. Coffee, juice and a variety of teas were readily available. No matter what time we went up for breakfast the food was replenished quickly. Staff were lovely and worked hard.

Breakfast was served in The Haven on the roof terrace which turned into a very popular cocktail bar at night. We were never bothered by the outside visitors who were ushered to the lift by the doormen. Noise was not an issue for us and we did not hear any other guests complaining.

Reception staff, doormen and concierge services were exceptional. Always a smile and cheery greeting. Special mention for Jimmy who talked us through the metro system, highlighted maps to show us the route to where we wanted to go and who made some great recommendations of places to visit. He also managed to get us tickets to the Tenement Museum for our last day to avoid my disappointment of missing out.

We would both definitely recommend this hotel for it's location, cleanliness, hospitality and above all the very special staff.

PS Jimmy - I hope you got the business card for Sarge's which we left for you. Only send hungry visitors!!!

Room Tip: Our room was front facing on the 4th floor. If you are a light sleeper or not tired out from walking...

I think I have to start off with the positives! This hotel is centrally situated and within easy walking distance of all the major attractions and the Metro system. It is reasonably priced and is comfortable. But if that is all you want then fine but don't be taken in by its online description.

It is in fact quite the opposite to being a "sanctuary" and "boutique" in the European sense it is not!

The rooms are quite small, night time noise - if you happen to get the roadside room can be very distressing and the "Haven" Restaurant is ONE BIG NOISE - senseless loud music is played in the evenings! It obviously caters to the New York young elite and certainly not to older European travelers!

I am happy to add that the staff are very polite and helpful and the room bar is adequately stocked.

As older travelers and having been out all day it was nice to just sink into the comfortable beds and to be frank we did pay lower rates for our stay through booking.com - we would have been annoyed if we had paid the advertised rates.

So all in all a good place to stay with the above proviso! I am happy to talk to management and advice them what a boutique hotel should be all about!

Room Tip: Make sure it is not facing West 47

Thank you for your constructive feedback. Comments such as yours, are tool we utilize to improve upon the services that are provided for our guests.

I'd like to apologize for the drawbacks that you experienced. Our rooms are designed with the intent of maximizing use of space and most important…comfort. A warm palette of deep orange, chocolate brown and cognac, highlight our rooms, along with oversized headboards and plush pillow-top mattresses that complement the luxurious Frette sheets, duvets and terry, while crystal chandeliers add glamour that present an overall ambiance that is inviting and warm. Our shower design is something that most guests rave about.

I’m very sorry that your visit to our rooftop restaurant Haven was not the way you expected it to be. We try and provide a different experience which is more energetic and lively on our rooftop. It's a great area for social gatherings and corporate functions. Rest assured that I will share your feedback with the management team.

We pride ourselves in being an premier lifestyle boutique hotel, with European inspired hospitality. As you see from our reviews, guests appreciate that we simply strive to provide them with intimate, genuine and personalized service, creating a "home away from home" atmosphere. We wish that the Sanctuary Hotel could be the ideal choice for everyone. We understand that different guests have different needs, and will continue to place emphasis on creating the best possible experience.

I'm from NYC and never stayed in a hotel in NYC....glad I picked Sanctuary! It was my wife's birthday and after a night on the town, I wanted somewhere nice to stay. I looked at Sanctuary online and thought it looked nice and very sexy...it was that and then some. It is truly a gorgeous hotel and the staff was great. It was awesome to enter our room and to be greeted with birthday well wishes in a card and brownies. "It is the little things we do", S. Wilson (staff member) mentioned after expressing our gratitude. It makes a big difference. Oh....and there is breakfast on the rooftop as well...pretty good way to end our visit. Will definitely go back and recommend to all fellas looking to impress the lady in your life. SEXY!

From the welcome the moment we arrived until the morning of our departure the service was outstanding. The rooms are small by American standards but perfectly adequate to us Europeans, we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. The location was superb and breakfast on the roof at Haven was simple but well presented and a bonus way to start the day.

The only difficulties we had were with noise and trying to get a taxi, there is very little the hotel can do about the noise from outside whether it is the traffic or the church bells next door at 0730. However, the room was directly opposite a cleaners cupboard and despite a complaint there was still excessive noise very early in the morning.

I would stay here again and I would highly recommend the hotel.
