“A great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

The hotel was as good as the publicity photos, from the lobby to the rooms all decorated nicely, great comfy beds and good shower. Road noise didnt bother us and not that bad but for quiet rooms ask for church side. Good position for most places and really nice rooftop bar and restaurant great view, drinks a little pricey but worth it and it is New York. All the staff wonderful and the concierge Jacob is the font of all knowledge from where to eat and music venues etc etc.

we had a great holiday and cannot praise the hotel enough

We were really looking forward to our stay at the hotel and in all honesty, it did not live up to our expectations.
First the good points; the Concierge service is very good as are the front desk staff. They were always happy to help with any request going out of their way to get taxis etc. The location is good, only a short walk from Times Square and the Subway. I personally preferred the other side of Times Square to this side however. The rooms and public areas were furnished to a very high standard and the room was very comfortable.
Bad points; our room could not be described as compact, it was far smaller than that. we were travelling for 2 weeks, had 2 suitcases and 2 other bags and the room is not big enough for that amount of luggage. We had no real natural light in our room; a frosted glass window overlooking the central fire escape. Certainly no view. My opinion is that it is a case of style over substance in the hotel. Next moan is about the breakfast. It is very poor quality and i would put it on a par with Days Inn/Travelodge standard. Really disappointing considering it has a renowned restaurant on premises. Which leads me nicely to the rooftop terrace/bar "Haven". I appreciate that it is a lovely space to relax but even as hotel guests we felt as though we were being treated as second class citizens, compared to peopple who obviously were regular customers. I genuinely felt that there was no incentive as a hotel guest to use their facilities, which led to us visiting only twice, the first time when we eventually managed to grab a seat only to be told to move by one of the hostesses shortly after as she had promised the seat to other customers. The second visit was a quick affair as it became apparent that other customers were getting served ahead of ourselves so we left without making a purchase. I'm afraid I don't like being made to feel like a second class citizen in a hotel where I am paying good money to stay in.
Overall, I feel that this is a place of style over substance and although it has good points i honestly think i'll take my business elsewhere next time.

Room Tip: Make sure that the room you book is big enough for your needs or you will feel very claustrophobic.

I'm very disappointed that we did not live up to your expectations and apologize for any inconveniences that you experienced. Here at the Sanctuary, we make every effort to provide our guests with the best possible services.

Our rooms are designed with the intent to maximize use of space while creating an environment that is both inviting and warm. From our plush pillow-top mattresses, to our rainfall shower heads, many guests feel that our rooms are well appointed and have the guest’s experience in mind. We have multiple room options ranging from standard queen rooms to deluxe king rooms. I only wished that you had informed our front desk of your concerns, so that we had the opportunity to provide you with different room options. We want every guest visit to be as comfortable and enjoyable as it can be.

Our complimentary continental breakfast includes a variety of pastries, fruits and cereal options, as well as fresh juices, assorted teas and coffee. As we continuously look for ways to improve what we provide, feedback is always important. However, we do not feel that our complimentary breakfast that is provided reflects that of a Days Inn. We make every effort to provide multiple quality options while maintaining reasonable costs so that we can continue to provide this as a complimentary amenity.

I’m very sorry that your visit to our rooftop restaurant Haven was not the way it was meant to be. The last thing we would want is for any of our guests to feel as they are “second class citizens”. Our hotel guests are always top priority and I’m very shocked that you felt this way. Rest assured that I will certainly address your concerns with the Haven staff in efforts of prevent anything like this from happening again.

We would love for you to give us another opportunity in the future, so that we may provide you with the flawless stay that you deserve. Please contact me directly for reservations, so that I may personally ensure that your visit is the way it should be. I can be reached at jeremy@sanctuaryhotelnyc.com.

Wonderful 3 nights 4 days stay! So very close to Time Square, amazing location. We walked every where. Breakfast was ok, very busy in a small room. Room was small but nice and clean and very comfortable. We received a nice box or hand made cup cakes and a hand written note on the hotel wishing us a happy wedding anniversary. We were touched and the cup cakes were so very yummy! Over all an amazing stay, will for sure stay their again when in New York!

The Sanctuary Hotel was in an excellent location just off Times Square. The reception staff could not be more obliging and efficient. In particular, we would like to mention Branden and Jacob for their help during our stay. The rooftop terrace/restaurant, the Haven, was a great venue for earlybird drinks and dinner at any time. It seemed popular both with residents and New Yorkers alike.

The rooms were very comfortable, albeit compact which is probably commonplace with New York hotels.

There is only one downside to this hotel and that is the rooms are noisy. We were in room 510. Although we could not hear any traffic/street noise, there was constant banging of doors from other rooms. This could easily be rectified by fitting the bedroom doors with the appropriate closers, so that the doors shut more gently. We did mention this to the reception staff when checking out.

Otherwise, an excellent hotel and we would certainly stay there again.

Great service ;-), quiet room, a few steps away from Times Square, close to the subway and Central Park, the only downside for a modest breakfast ;-(
Not for large rooms, but come by here to spend time in the city and not in the room is not a problem ;-)

Stayed mid-week tuesday through Friday and the service was excellent throughout. The rooms are small but the in-room shower was ace. Toiletries are very nice and breakfast was more than sufficient. Hotel is not cheap but the location is unbeatable as it's two minutes to Times Square literally. Had a problem with the Air-con which was noisy unfortunately. The service-guy did try to fix it on our last night but actually made it worse. The hotel did their best to sort the problem and they did as a good-will gesture provide us with a nice bottle of cava and a refund of $100. The concierge S.T.A.R. staff are brill and will sort out anything you want.
The roof-top bar is lovely but very expensive and there is no incentive for hotel guests to use it as it is always busy with the apparent local "movers & shakers" who are more than happy to pay the prices. overall, a very nice exclusive hotel but absolutely no view unfortunately due to location.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the elevator to avoid noise.
