“Great Location But Below Average and Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Booked this hotel because of its location in Times Square and mention that it had been renovated.

The hotel is in a perfect location for walking to many popular attractions in New York. Just step out the door and you're in the heart of Times Square with restaurants and shopping all around. You can also walk to almost any Broadway show from here. Getting here is a breeze from the airports and there are cabs and buses available at all hours.

The hotel lobby looks fairly modern and has a great view of Times Square. However, the renovation must have been a while ago because the hotel has seen better days. The carpet is dingy, the paint peeling in some areas of the room, the repainted tub is peeling also. There is no air conditioning in the winter months and the room can get quite stuffy without opening the window which also lets in the street noise. There is no water pressure at all from the shower head and the water barely trickles out. The bedding is fairly clean looking and there is a flat screen TV in the room. As in most hotels, the prices of the items on the room service menu are ridiculous. A "bowl" of chili was $11. and was approximately 2-3 oz. There is a coke machine near the ice machine that sells sodas for $3.00 per bottle. The person at the desk was cold/rude and seemed uninterested in the hotel guests. After staying at this hotel and reading the reviews previously posted, I fully believe that the reviews commending the hotel staff were written by the staff members themselves. Only one staff member went out of their way to help us and that was the bellman named Jim who got us a cab to take us to the airport later in the day. He truly seemed to want to help and make our stay less stressful.

We have stayed in many hotels of all price ranges and this is one of the lesser quality hotels I have seen as far as room quality. If you can book this hotel under $200. it is probably a decent value because of the central location. Anything over that is too much in my opinion.

Room Tip: Corner rooms have a nice view of Times Square.

After a long flight, plus a terrible pre-paid bus ride with ‘Go Airlink’ (is there some kind of Emmy Award for the worst shuttle bus ever?), we were still smiling -- as we’d finally made it to Times Square!

Arrived at the Crowne Plaza just after midnight and that’s when we saw THEM through the glass revolving entry doors -- three hotel porters.

They stood chatting together inside the foyer, watching us struggle with luggage through the automatic revolving doors, where we got stuck with 3 large suitcases! Laughing before panic set in; we triggered the emergency door button, dragged our baggage into the foyer, up the escalator, and towards the check-in desk -- without any staff assistance.

Would have made some great YouTube footage but as usual the video camera was buried inside one of our bags.

Checked-in to find our prepaid Studio Room with King Bed, on a top floor with Times Square views, wasn’t available. After some furious keyboard clicking, front desk organized a room with 2 double beds on the 26th floor with a decent side-view of the Square. By now, our smiles were fading fast, so they threw in free room Wi-Fi.

Day 3 - Fire alarms went off mid-morning, so I made a run for the stairwell. Hotel guests were wandering around the corridors like confused zombies until someone confirmed that they’d seen front desk and it was a false alarm. Staff announcements blared over hallway speakers – but the alarm noise made it impossible to understand what was said.

ROOM HAD NO FRIDGE -- but on check-out, housecleaning staff mentioned that Front Desk hires them for $30 per day!

POSITIVES: (Yes, there were positives)
Soundproof room with no noise from street; Blackout curtains kept out the neon billboards; Located close to Broadway Theatres, Subway and Times Square; Next door to Hershey's Chocolate and across the road from M&M's store.

NEGATIVES:
Nothing special about the room and NO FRIDGE.
No customer service or communication skills.

Room Tip: Pick another hotel

Thank you xxxHelenaxxx B for your review. I glad to read that you enjoyed the lack of sound and light in our rooms. We pride ourselves on ensuring that our guests have restful nights of sleep while they are here! I apologize for the lack of customer service you experienced right off the bat. That is not what we expect of our employees. When you join us again we will gladly send a refrigerator to your room free of charge!

This was my second trip to NYC and loved staying in Times Square. It is close to everything we needed and to transportation. We had a small slice of a view of the Hudson. We requested a room with a view of the water and that is what we got, so I would suggest being specific about what you want. The bed was comfy and room was clean. Although the hotel is nice enough, keep in mind this is not a super lush hotel, just clean, comfy and convenient.

I do not like to stay in Times Square hotels, but my brother and his family booked this hotel as they do not visit NYC very often. Overall, it is a good hotel. My room was a good size and in good condition. The bathtub was a bit dated, but otherwise I have no problem with the room. It is well located for those who are visiting NYC for the first time and want to be at the heart of the tourist district. For the same price, you can get a very nice boutique hotel, the type that I always book when I go into the city. The room looked recently renovated, it was very clean, and since I was on the 33rd floor – there was no street noise. However, the walls were a bit thin since the child in the room across the hall could be heard quite well when he/she was unhappy. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for those who wish to stay in Times Square.

This was our third time staying here. We booked a Times Square view and we were given a great room on the front corner of the building. The rooms are spacious, clean, the beds are very comfortable and there is a nice sized flat screen tv to watch. The only thing missing would be a fridge which would be nice. The hotel is very close to Duffy Square where TKts on the Square is, plus the "red stairs" . The restaurant 1605 has a nice buffet breakfast and a good selection of pre theatre dinners for around 30 dollars. A total recommend enjoy. Rhoda at the front desk was very helpful - a great employee

Room Tip: The Times Square side are wonderful, the Hudson view is also nice

I was able to find a great rate for this hotel and couldn't have more pleased with the room and the value. I had requested a corner room (recommended by other reviewers) and had a view of both Times Square and the Hudson - The room was very large and the bed was very comfortable. Our great rate also included a hot buffet breakfast each day of our stay for just a dollar :) The food and selection was excellent. This was a great experience and we recommend the hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: request a corner room on a high floor

NStevens 1234, thank you for recommending our hotel! We appreciate the time you took to write a review and are pleased to know you were satisfied with the room, the value, and the restaurant as well. Our corner rooms are, as you stated, pretty awesome because of the views. We look forward to your next stay with us!

Room was an OK size. Bathrooms were very dated and in fairly poor condition. Shower was feeble and took a while to coax any sort of hot water out of it.

The Fitness Centre is an odd set up. They charge $10, which can only be paid by credit card (and cannot be charged to the room). What they don't advertise readily is that Priority Club members get free access. However, you need to show a Priority Club room key and not the card itself. Talk about making life difficult.

Front desk service was bordering on rude. The lady who checked me out urgently needs to go to charm school, or have a personality transplant.

On the positive side, it was at least quite cheap - perhaps corporate rates post Sandy are unusually low.

FoxTrotOscar, thank you for your review of the Crowne Plaza. I apologize for the confusion over our fitness center. It is a separate New York Sports Club so that is why the charges cannot go to the room. I also apologize for the treatment you received by the front desk agent. That is definitely not the behavior that we expect from our employees. We do hope that you chose to join us again in the future so we can show you that we are all friendly and helpful here!
