We stayed at the Herald Square hotel from October 16-20. We lucked out and got an amazing room on the 9th floor or so we thought.

The first morning that we were there my girlfriend woke up with bites on her hand and arm. We thought maybe there might be bugs but we couldn't see any in the bed and the room was so nice we thought, how could it be? Our second night there she woke up in the middle of the night to something biting her again. In the morning we called front desk and told them what was happening. They wanted to come up to the room and see the bites and she said she would get changed and come down but before she had time, 2 minutes later, someone from housekeeping was at our door ready to inspect the bed.

We were really annoyed that this guy came up and was going through the bed while we were still in our pajamas! When he couldn't find anything he said it must be an allergy to the down pillows. My girlfriend is a doctor and she informed him that allergy does not present like that, he wouldn't believe her. So they changed our room to a much smaller one on another floor and that room seemed fine.

Aside from irritating us by not believing that there could be bugs, the hotel staff is friendly and our only other complaint is the water pressure and the lack of hot water. The only reason we are writing this is because we know Herald Square is a budget hotel and with that comes a certain level of expectation but we paid for one of the "new queen rooms" and although they looked nice they aren't worth it. This was our second time staying there and the first time was a better experience....before the renovations. It looks nice and it should be good but it was disappointing.

  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't pay extra for the new queen rooms. Pay the lower rate and you'll get what you pay for.

Six of us stayed at the Herald Square for eight nights recently and I can confirm that most of the reviews on here are pretty accurate.
- The hotel is in a fantastic location (very short walk to Macy's, ESB and Madison Sq. Gardens).
- It's clean and the beds are super comfortable
- The rooms do need to be renovated but they are currently in the process of doing this (if possible, pay the extra for one of the newly renovated rooms which are really nice).
- The staff are very nice and helpful, they upgraded four of us to better rooms than we had booked (e.g. my fiancé and I had booked a standard room and they upgraded us to a queen. Our friends had booked a queen and they were upgraded to a new room).

Having been there now I would recommend if you're a couple that you go for at least the queen room option. That way you might get upgraded to a new room if you're lucky, and if not, the queen rooms are fine (although they need updating they are a decent size and have really comfie beds with duvets instead of horrible scratchy blankets!!)

Basically - don't expect luxury and you won't be disappointed!

Oh one final word of warning - the single rooms are absolutely TINY!

  • Liked — The location and the beds!
  • Disliked — Room needed updating/renovating
  • Tips/Secrets: — Avoid the single rooms, too small

I just came back after 5 nights at the Herald Square Hotel with friends and I agree with the other reviews: it's clean, the location is simply perfect, the area is safe and full of restaurants (I prefer the ones around Madison Avenue, but it's plenty of choice everywhere at walking distance), and the price is more than ok. I've also found the staff quite friendly and helpful: our impression was that they try really hard to give their guest what they need, and the free coffee is a nice thing to get when you're back after a busy day.

In general, the hotel is pretty basic and the rooms are on the small side. BUT... surprise surpise. They are renewing all the hotel, bit by bit, and as we had the "old" rooms, just before we were leaving, a guy at the desk (maybe the manager?) insisted to show us one of the refurnished rooms . And the new rooms are *gorgeous*! Still small but very well furnished, with a sparkling bathroom and a plasma tv: definitively 3 stars level for a 1 star price!

So, try to get one of the new rooms, and your stay will change from all right to heavenly! They told us the best way is to book online and then call them and ask for it. (as I'll definitively do next time!)

It was my boyfriend and I first trip to NYC. Knowing that the hotels were expensive and there are alot of bad places in NY, I decided to do some research. Based on my research, I found Herald Square to be the best deal and reviews. In addition to the great reviews, the other hotel guest left some great tips in which we used during our stay. (i.e. where to eat-Speedys, and hotel only takes money for the lockers and for the super shuttle. There is also a real good restaurant northeast of Speedys. I forget the name of the restaurant, but we went there for drinks one night and had breakfast there the next morning.) So, if you have time to read through all of the reviews, do so, to get more tips. It was VERY helpful.

Although the hotel received good reviews, I was still a little hesistant. But I was VERY HAPPPY with our stay at Herald Square. It was safe, clean and the staff was very friendly. I would stay here again.

Room: we received an upgrade to our room. It was expecting something small, but it was nice to have something just a bit bigger.

Bathrooms: small, but clean

Safe: good and safe.

Shopping: there is so much shopping in the area, maybe about 2 blocks north of the hotel. i.e. Macys, H&M, Footlocker, Ninewest, etc etc etc.

Food: Speedys, the place I mentioned above and there is also a good restaurant right next to the Empire State Building.

Subways: there are so many near the hotel.
