I stayed for two nights at the Hyatt near Grand Central Station because for some reason the rate I found was better than my usual choices, which are the NY Hampton Inns. Expecting Hyatt to be a full service, top choice, I was extremely disappointed. Other than receiving a clean room, there was nothing good about this stay.
From check-in to check-out, the staff were at best indifferent. Half a dozen bell/valet staff stand around in front of the hotel looking bored. They watch people with bags try to get in and out of the revolving doors. They watch people walk out of the hotel and look lost. They certainly did not seem interested in helping me out when I needed directions and struggled with bags on my way in.
I specifically asked the desk clerk for a non-connecting room away from the elevators, and lo and behold, I got a room with connecting doors on both sides, directly across from the elevators. I was told that that was all that was available of my room type. I heard everything that went on in both rooms: the connecting doors are not soundproof or light proof. If the room had not been so dark (very little light wattage is provided) I'd have had to shove towels under the door to block out the light, as I did the front door. I also heard the elevator bells, but think they may have turned them off at night.
During the second day the water to my room went off. Not sure what happened, but I did call and it was resolved. The water after was brown for a few minutes. Never an explanation or an apology.
The room was large and clean. I had room to exercise. The bathroom is small but the water pressure was good. Amenities in the bathroom were nice. There was no coffee maker in the room. Bed was new and very comfortable. Television was the old blocky kind but reception was clear and volume control worked well (to block out the noise from the televisions in the two adjacent rooms).
No reason to stay there again. Lots and lots of better and probably cheaper options in NYC.
