“Location is Everything!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

This is an older hotel right in the heart of Times Square with only minutes to walk to the Subway, TKTS booth or any of the shows. This was a third trip to New York to do sightseeing and shows and I would stay here again in a heartbeat!! The rooms are small and somewhat dated but everything from the toilet to the shower to the air conditioner worked perfectly. Maid service was great every day. Staff is friendly and helpful although don't see the "transportation" lady if you have any questions other than their shuttle service. She "doesn't know" about other means. The concierge is very, very helpful though! We used their cafe in the lobby only for morning coffee and the staff is not friendly. There are many places nearby for great food so you don't need to even set foot in there. We got a good price online and would stay again!

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room.

Had a so called renovated room on 14th floor, bath was cracked, carpet was stained in all not very pleasant. Dread to think what the un-renovated rooms looked like. Location was right next to Times Square. Ate in the cafe in their lobby and again it was the worst breakfast I had ever eaten. Great shame wouldn't stay here again

Room Tip: Don't stay here

The Hotel Edison was our first glimpse of New York after getting off a long flight from New Zealand. Staff were friendly when we checked in around 3am. Our room was small but had everything we needed for our whirlwind trip, since all we needed to do was sleep with so much to see and do in NYC. Loved the location with everything so close. Would come back again but would take one of the renovated rooms.

We stayed at the Edison Hotel for 6 days during in april. Our room was on the third floor, NOT on the streetside. Our room was clean and quiet, something we really appreciated during our stay. The bathroom was just what you need (clean, with a clean and cleaned toilet, a bathtub/shower); in other words, "what you need in a room where you spend no more than one hour a day"... The staff was very helpful, always looking for the best solutions, at our service (our son had severly twisted his ankle five days before our arrival in NY). Some will say that their rooms were too small but hell, you don't travel to NY to stay in your room! The beds were clean, comfortable and the service was more than correct. Moreover, the hotel is very well located, close to subway stations (provided you don't mind using your legs 10 min), 8th and 9th Av. for the restaurants... It was our first stay in NY, with our two sons and we really enjoyed our stay at the Edison Hotel.

On arrival the welcome we got was amazing from the door staff to the lady at reception (blond lady forgot her name) was so nice and welcomed us as a valued customer. On arrival to our room we were pleasantly surprised, the room was spacious and clean . Really wasn't expecting much after reading the reviews but would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a location that can't be beating. Even on checkout the man was very nice and we had somewhere to stow or bags for a few hours as we had a late flight. The luggage guy who took our bag was also extremely nice and recognised we were irish and we chatted to him about his irish roots. It's the little things that make a stay so memorable and I hope as the manager reads this he comeds his staff for there hard work and polite attitude The only negative was when we were waiting for our taxi I went to the shop in the hotel to get a soda and a lady who worked in the shop pushed me out the door and slammed the door in my face and her and younger lady laughed at me as I tried to get in and they continued to stop me from coming in. They never said why they were closed just pushed me which I feel was very unprofessional and I was greatly upset. Although that wouldn't stop me from returning to the hotel. I'll be back next year.

We travel to NYC a lot. Most hotel rooms are well over $300. The Edison Hotel is relatively inexpensive. Every Tue. and Friday afternoon they serve free wine from 4 PM to 6 PM. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The rooms may not be the most luxurious as many hotels in NYC, they are more than adequate if you are like us, sightseeing, or in our case going to see Broadway shows.
We pulled up in our car and the doorman had it valet parked for us. There is a parking fee.
The main thing that draws us back to this grand old hotel is the location. Right in the heart of Times Square. Since we are theater goers this makes it very easy to get to our shows on time. We will stay here again for our next Broadway Theater trip.

Room Tip: We prepaid for our room so we saved quite a bit of money. Also allowed us what level of room we wan...

Such a great and central location - we walked to and from the Newark Airport shuttle bus stop. Striking entrance areas evoking the 1920s glamour of New York. Friendly, relaxed and helpful reception staff. Small double room but quite adequate - who spends time in their room in NY? Lots of lifts, we never had to hang around waiting. Valuables can be kept in the safe deposit boxes and cases stored on your day of departure - ask at reception. Our bathroom had all the necessaries and room service was good. Helpful concierge (bit of a queue so go early) gave useful advice on show tickets etc. Huge breakfasts in the Café Edison - we didn't need to eat much lunch. There is a useful food store next door for provisions too. Check if there is live jazz in the cosy Rum House bar on ground floor - we caught the end of a great show. There is an IT suite with computers/printers.

Downsides at the Edison Hotel for us; no drink making facilities in the room, but we popped downstairs and bought drinks to enjoy in our room each morning. They could do with a few more staff on reception - it's a long desk with few staff on duty!

Don't stay near Times Square if you hope for peace and quiet at night as there are sirens and roaring air con machines and flashing neon lights all night long!

Top NY tips from us -
The Marriott Marquis Hotel over the road has a revolving restaurant high up which does a decently priced buffet dinner from 5pm- a great way to see some (but NOT all) of the panoramic views. Get there early for a window seat.

We enjoyed dinner jazz at Dizzy's Coca Cola Club (part of - but not actually AT the Lincoln Centre) with great views of Central Park from the tables. Book and get there early for the better seats.

Pax Wholefood restaurants are great for big salads to neutralise all the fat and sugar you will probably consume elsewhere.

Bryant Park next to New York Library is a little haven and great for people watching.

We took the sail boat option from Battery Park to cruise round past the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island - great unless you are desperate to go on land at these sights. Although pricey, it was very relaxing, they played reggae and had a bar on board; we enjoyed gazing at the Manhattan skyline for ages while resting our feet.

We recommend the Tenement Museum for an insight into immigrant life. The New York Police Museum is also a little gem.

Disappointment in New York? This came in the form of the worst cup of tea I have ever drunk served by unhelpful staff in the best hidden café you will ever encounter - at the Guggenheim.
