“Hotel Edison, Times Square: Dilapidated Rooms & No Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

Hotel Edison is in total disrepair. I have heard there's a renovated section, but we sure didn't see it. I'd compare it with a dilapidated Days Inn. The shower had been re-caulked many times, the tiles old, the toilet outdated and difficult to flush. The inside doorknob fell off in our hand, we were forced to call downstairs to get our door opened from the outside! The carpet in the rooms is detaching from the threshold and very worn. The Bellmen were rude. The lobby bar doesn't allow hotel guests to take a cocktail up to their rooms. The breakfast cafe was quick enough for morning coffee, had an incredible ceiling (a holdover from brighter days), but also rude. There are NO amenities, no room service, nothing. On the positive side: we got an ok rate; the location is fabulous; the air conditioning was ok; and our room was not too loud for sleeping. Might I recommend Hotel Edison, Times Square for: a quick family college visit to NYU; a party weekend for 20-30 somethings; and when you just wanna save money! I recommend highly against Hotel Edison for a romantic get-away. I also can't recommend families with children under 12 staying in Times Square. They were getting squished by the crowds. Perhaps Central Park, Bryant Park, Chelsea, or Wall Street areas are better for children(?)

my wife and i stayed at the Edison sept 10-15 2012. Had a few concerns having read some negative feedback on the hotel but we needn't have worried. Yes the rooms are on the small side , as is the bathroom but this is Times square where space is at a premium. We have previously stayed in the Paramount on Times square and the Edison knocks spots off that , we have also stayed at the Doubletree on Lexington which is nice and the roms are much bigger but i felt we were too far out , there were no bars near and we were having to pay for taxi's all the while . On a city break all my wife and i look for is a nice clean hotel , clean bedding and fresh towels in a great location as we only use it as a base for a pit stop and to sleep - and the Edison meets all these requirements , so if you are like minded have no worries if you've booked or about to .

349 a night, couldnt sleep, horrible bed mattress meant no sleeping at night and a broken piece of furniture in the room. NOT WHAT I EXPECTED for this price. tut tut The window AC reminded me of the kind you find in the flea bag motels. The room was always too warm, it just never really got cooled off.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.

On arrival had to wait until 3 and had our bags stored which was fine, came back went straight to the room. Room was good size, bed was good size and comfortable, TV functioned perfectly and had most of the channels available. Bathroom acceptable size and clean. Overall the hotel was great, a little expensive for what it is, but to be fair most other hotels are twice the price in times square area. The location was perfect, literally round the corner from times square, meaning all the main dining/night time attractions including broadway are easy to get to. Had to get transport to battery park area but this was not a big issue as plenty of subway stations and fair priced taxi around $15 to battery park. For a 5-7 day visit this hotel was perfect because of location, managed to get everything we wanted to do done. Overall definetly worth thinking about if trying to save some money.

Room Tip: Some floors have construction going on, try and ask to be away from that if possible.

We took our Son to New York for a few days so he could experience the Big Apple prior to going to boot camp with the United States Marine Corp. All of our dealings with the hotel were effortless prior to arriving as was our checking in. Hotel staff was very friendly, professional, and eager to assist in anyway possible. The room was laid out nicely and there was no cramped feeling for the three of us. A/C worked great, beds and pillows were very comfortable, and housekeeping did a great job of cleaning and restocking the room every day. The two doormen we encountered were a wealth of information as far as restaurants and commuting questions. The restaurant in the lobby was perfect for breakfast and coffee prior to heading out. The location of this hotel is perfect, being right in the heart of Times Square. Our fifth floor room faced the front of the hotel but, outside noises were never an issue and we did not have our sleep interrupted. We are completely satisfied with every aspect of this hotel and are very appreciative of every staff member we encountered for making our stay in New York a great one.

We stayed for 2 nights as part of a NYC Tour Group. I'd read the reviews & wasn't sure what to expect. If you are looking for the Waldorf, this isn't it, neither is the price. The hotel is old but well maintained and our room appeared to have been recently renovated.
As with most older hotels, the rooms were small as were the baths. It was clean and the staff friendly. We didn't eat in the restaurant yet others did and found it to be good for breakfast.
Location, Location, Location. Just off Times Square, many fine restaurants and the Subway system is a stroll away; don't pay for a Taxi but know the subway stops. Broadway plays abound, all within walking distance. Times Square, the worlds biggest zoo is down the street so go watch the people. The Diamond district is one block East. Some construction on the street but no access problems.
The security was good with us having to show our key to get in at night and to get to the elevators.
I've read some of the reviews where people were put out by the lack of a fridge/microwave. I check these things before booking. Besides, who in their right mind wants a fridge or micro; This is NYC so you should not be eating in your room.

Room Tip: Ask about the room before booking. This little tip could put you in a nicer room because you cared e...

Just back from another trip to NYC, we are very open minded and have stayed at a variety of locations and class of hotels. The Edison is without question in a great spot, right on Times Square and near the subway. The main issue is that what is advertised is far from what you find when you check in. The rooms were small, with not much space. The bathroom was tiny. You could wash your hand hands in he sink, your feet in the shower whilst having a number 2!

Our room was nothing better than a decent hostel.

Thank you for your review. For the future, please do feel free to inquire from our reception on any return visits about the availability of a bigger room if the one you are allocated is not to your liking. We are presently undergoing renovations during which we are replacing carpets, beds and linens throughout the hotel as well as do a complete redecorating of some floors. We look forward to welcoming you back and are sure you will be pleased with the renovations.
