“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

My stay at the Bedford was truly enjoyable. Even though the hotel is older, it is clean and well kept. The staff was accommodating, always ready to give me directions. The hotel is located close to The Grand Central Terminal which was convenient for catching the train or finding something to eat. Lots of restaurants, grills etc. are near this hotel which is a good thing. It is within walking distance to many interesting things.

Room Tip: ask to be in room that is higher - will be quieter - Lydia was a great help in getting me a room tha...

An ok hotel to stay downtown New York. New decor and more silent air conditioning would be beneficial. Overall good value for money but do not look for anything special or any reason to remember the place (neither positive but also negative).

Stayed in the Bedford Hotel last weekend for 4 nights and shared the Tower Suite with two other family members. The suite was large by New York standards and very clean with good views of the city skyline.
We were warmly welcomed, upgraded and given a gift as it was our 35th wedding anniversary and the Sales Manager Lidia and her staff who were so welcoming. This was our 2nd but not our last stay at The Bedford Hotel. It is so central to Midtown, Grand Central Station, Fifth Ave, Bryant Park and Times Square. Bus from Newark Liberty Airport stops only 3 mins away.

Thanks again to everyone at the Bedford for their hospitality and service.

Stayed here for 5 nights April 2013 tenth floor
This is not an expensive hotel by Central London , Paris or New York standards, so don't compare it with the Hyatt etc but it is clean , warm and more than adequate for sightseeing in New York.

You can reach grand central in 2 min to catch the metro for North South travel and the Buses on West 42nd (M42) are a couple of minutes away for cross Manhattan travel. You can walk to the empire state, Chrysler building, Bryant park, times square etc etc no problem.

Blooms diner is 1 min away on the corner and that sorts out breakfast each day and most of the evening meals (avoid the salmon) for a reasonable price.

Hotel looks like a 1930s build and has some lovely old features including a postal shute connecting every floor to central post box ( no longer in use). Adding to the nostalgia are real cathode ray tube TVs in huge purpose built cupboards from the 1970s but who goes to new york to watch TV. The views from the rooms are of more skyscrapers but this is new york not a country club in sussex! There are air conditioning units in the windows which work even if they are a bit noisy. The bathrooms are perfectly clean, the water is warm and after a day's sight seeing its great to soak in the tub or have a shower.

The beds are comfy and ours (room 1004) was enormous. The walls are wall-papered not emulsioned, amazing

There are facilities to make tea or coffee and even a fridge but its not really self catering.

The wifi reached up from the lobby to at least the 10th floor; OK for checking stuff out on the net but not really enough for high speed data usage .

Not suitable for youngish children as the windows can be fully opened without safety catches and its a long way down.

I noticed comments about slow lifts but I thought that if they were any faster I'd get travel sick . The staff were fine, very polite and happy to take care of our cases on our final day after we had checked out and before we set off for the airport.

We had a great time in NYC and we would certainly book the same hotel again without hesitiation.

We are a fairly active pair of 64 year olds

Room Tip: we asked for non smoking and the room was spotlessly clean not a trace of tobacco; wonderful

Just a block away from Central Station, the location of the hotel was terrific.
I stayed here with my a family member (part of a larger group with whom we traveled).
The beds were always tidy upon return to the room and the staff was friendly and helpful when asked for trivial questions.
Though the beds were a bit harder than I am personally used to, I slept like a rock.
We had a room on the rear side of the building, which probably cancelled out a bit of the street noise.
Breakfast was taken care of in a diner right around the corner (no establishment for breakfast of their own) which was no problem for me.

All in all a good experience.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

We stayed for four nights at Easter. Our reason for staying there was that we needed a suite with a separate room and sofa bed for our adult son who was joining us for a night. The hotel is well situated on a relatively quiet street. No facilities and two rather old lifts, but we had no problems as restaurants/cafes were within a short distance.
The suite had a mini kitchen with a microwave, coffee maker and fridge - all relatively new plus some crockery/cutlery and glasses. So we were able to eat in a couple of nights and do our own breakfasts.
The suite was pretty clean though the rooms were really in need of a good makeover. The doors were old and all had a section cut out of the bottom, the only wardrobe/closet was in a very narrow wall cupboard that you had to walk into - and if you wanted to use the safe, you really needed to crawl into that cupboard! The bathroom was in need of a new bathtub (reminded me of ones I have seen in student houses, though it was kept clean. The bedding was also in need of replacement, but the sheets were perfectly clean (we had two queen beds in bedroom and a double sofa bed - made up (and with extra towels). One small cushion on the sofa should have been thrown away as very stained.
We would probably not have chosen to stay here as a couple, but as we had an extra person staying it was fine. I'd recommend it to families on a budget, but not as a romantic hideaway!

Room Tip: Rooms at back of building will be quieter, though we found that our 12th floor room was reasonably q...

The hotel is located in a central position, very close to grand central - you can't beat that. The price was also very reasonable in comparison with other places in NYC. We arrived after a long flight and although indicated in our reservation could not get a room at noon time and came back only in the evening. The keys did not work and then we found out that there is a lot of noise, and we got a different room which was better in that aspect. Quite surprising - the doors are not really closing the rooms, they are about one inch above the floor so you can easily hear all the people in the adjacent rooms and in the corridor. Most likely will look for a different hotel in the future.
