“Great location and customer service, with a vintage flair”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

My hubby and i stayed here for 2 nights on business. We requested early check-in due to a grueling flight and despite a very busy weekend, the hotel got us in a little early. It was walking distance to amazing restaurants and cafes, and NYU. The restaurant downstairs, North Square, is good for brekkie and lunch, and the modern updates of the rooms did not compromise the vintage flair of the rooms. Rodney, the doorman/concierge/bellman and all-around nice guy, was a joy, and really symbolizes the heart and soul of the place. He showed us a slide show in the lobby of all the stars who have visited and it was pretty neat. Our only beef is that because our room faced the street and was on the second floor, it was VERY loud, especially on Monday night (trash collection....yeesh). We did not sleep well.

Room Tip: Choose a room on a high floor away from the street if you are a light sleeper.

Have stayed here several times when in NYC. Rooms are small but comfortable. Staff is professional and very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is included .This hotel is located very close to NYU and wonderful restaurants and shops.

Room Tip: Reserve early as this hotel is often booked.

My friend and I decided to treat ourselves to larger rooms for our last two nights in New York. We arrived at the hotel just after 3pm, after a very slow check-in we found that my friend's king executive room was ready, my king deluxe was not and we were told they were waiting for the room inspection. After about 15 mins of waiting in the foyer, we asked how much longer and got told about another half an hour. If we hadn't asked, would they have let us wait there? We went up to my friend's room to continue waiting, we rang down after about 45 mins and they told us they would ring us right back. After a couple more mins, we rang again, no answer. At this stage I’m getting pretty grumpy. Another couple of mins, we rang again, got told someone is on their way up. The guy at the desk brought up my room key, apologised for the wait, said I had been upgraded to a king executive (room 602) and gave us a voucher for a free American breakfast (not the standard continental). This gave me hope that all was not ruined and we went out to make the most of our time in New York.
However when I went to have a shower late that night, I saw that the shower recess had mould & gunk growing in all the corners which would have taken several weeks to build up. I used a cotton bud to check that it was easily removable, and yes it was (see pictures). If my first room hadn't passed inspection, how had this one?
The only good thing I enjoyed about this hotel was the guy in the foyer (Bellboy? Lobby watcher? Concierge?) He was an older gentleman, always keen to offer tips, recommendations and directions and he did it with such enthusiasm that you couldn't help but smile.
Overall: slow service at the front desk & poor housekeeping outweighed the nice location and the guy in the foyer. Use your money to go somewhere else.

Dear KayJPerth ,
Thank you for your feedback. I am so sorry that your stay with us was less than satisfactory. It appears that we have failed when it comes to upkeep of the shower in your Executive King room. We are re-evaluating our inspection process to ensure this type of issue does not occur in the future. Again, I am terribly sorry that your experience at the Washington Square Hotel was not a good one, but invite you to give us another try.
Please contact me directly at abukala@wshotel.com should you want to discuss this issue further or make a future booking. We greatly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us to improve and provide a better experience.
Sincerely, Agnes Bukala

My wife, daughter and I stayed at this privately owned hotel in the heart of Greenwich Village in mid-September. All of the staff at the front desk, the concierge, and the restaurant staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful visit. The sit down breakfast with table service is which is included in the nightly rate is quite unusual from our experience. We jokingly asked the front desk staff on our departure to suggest something we could complain about as we couldn't think of anything. Our experience with hotels suggests that privately owned hotels try harder as the owners' reputations are on the line. This hotel represents great value in NY!

Room Tip: Get a room with 2 beds they are larger.

We loved Washington Square! The location is wonderful and the friendly staff were so welcoming and accommodating. The hotel is old, but there is something comforting about feeling like you're staying at your grandmother's house. We had the privilege of staying two extra nights after a seven night stay due to cancelled flights. The room we had for the week was large and light filled with a huge bathroom overlooking the park. We had different rooms the other two nights that weren't quite so nice. The air conditioner rattled all night in the first and the second one was so small that it was claustrophobic. But, we were just happy to have a safe place to stay after being sent back to the city not once, but twice. And the staff welcomed back with open arms. We will definitely go back to Washington Square on our next trip and stay in our big cozy room.

Room Tip: Ask for the corner room overlooking Washington Square Park.

I wanted to base our trip out of the West Village/Greenwich Village area, and at half the price of most other NY hotels in mid-September, this one fit the bill.

Pros: The lobby is beautiful and felt luxurious, the staff always greeted us with a smile, and the free breakfast was perfect for our appetites, with cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, bagels, and even chocolate croissants available along with coffee, tea and orange juice. The room was always clean and the free wifi was reliable and fast.

Cons: We were prepared for a small room, but our Double Superior room was really tiny! We made it work with some creative storage solutions. The bigger issue for us was the lack of natural light due to not having an outside facing window. It did allow us to sleep in well, but it was a little disconcerting to not see the sun until we walked outside the hotel.

The location was incredibly convenient for access to great restaurants and shops. We had a wonderful romantic dinner at Le Gigot, a french bistro on Cornelia St., and I was glad to be near my longtime favorite bookstore Three Lives & Company and favorite coffee shop Joe, both down the street on Waverly Place. A wide array of subway lines were all very close, so we could get anywhere pretty quickly. Being away from the Times Square tourists and feeling like a part of the neighborhood were both major benefits of staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: It's probably worth the extra $ to upgrade to a Double Deluxe room, as the Double Superior was q...

We stayed here at the end of June 2012 .The location is excellent with subways and restaurants within very very easy walking distance ,The best eatery's are around McDougall & Bleaker st's. DO NOT USE The hotels own restaurant ,over priced under cooked small portions , staff are rude lazy and unfriendly, and these are the same staff that serve the breakfast. The rest of the staff seem ok although the guy on the front door is a bit over friendly OTT. Yes the rooms are small
and the air con is noisy but the beds are comfortable. would we stay here again ? yes great location.
