Well, bear in mind that it is a budget hotel very well located in NY.
The hotel and the service has nothing to do with 3/4 stars modern hotels.

I've booked a double room for 3 nights through Expedia. When I arrived, as I was alone, I was given a single room. The clerk told me "I've turned away lots of customers today, we are full, sorry" (be lucky to have a room anyway). This room was very small (see photo) but I get a double room for the next 2 nights (without compensation for the first night of course). The double room is far more comfortable than the single.

This hotel is very well located, you have 3 metro lines nearby, among them the green line (4,5,6) which runs manhattan from north to south.
I find the room very calm and the bed was good, I've slept well (with earplugs). The bathrooms are very clean, and are cleaned regularly, even at night. I remember I have noticed someone had taken a shower at 10pm and the bathroom was clean again at 5am.

What you might not like is the ambiance. The hotel is very dark. The lobby is in fact a corridor and the front desk is above you, you feel a little bit miserable as a first impression. There are no paintings or posters on the walls, no decoration, rooms and corridors are nude and quite old.

So, if you expect or like modern hotels, you will be disappointed and go to an hotel which cost at least twice the price. If you are cool, you don't mind sharing a clean bathroom and you don't mind a kind of gloomy atmosphere due to lack of decoration and light this is an hotel for your small budget. They keep your luggage for free if you leave after 12am.

I booked a room at Hotel17 for 1 week after reading some positive review and reading that Woody Allen used it as location for one of his movies.

I really do not understand all the people giving high ratings to this place.
The room that they gave me was very small and dirty, the bed in very poor conditions and the AC inefficient. The room was also very noisy.
I asked to change the room and the very unpleasent staff, after a long and animated discussion, "threw" me the keys of 3 other rooms and saying that i was free to choose the best...they didn't come with me to show the rooms.

I saw all the rooms and they where really horrible, worse than the one they gave me. I was obliged to stay for the night because it was very late and I shared my room and the bathroom with few NY size COCKROACHES!

The next morning I tried then to leave and cancel my booking but my card had been already charged and they refused to give me back my money. I stayed i more nite and then I left the hotel even if i payed for the week.
AVOID THIS PLACE !

I was there in feb 2005 with my two children and was under the impression we would get a room with three single beds. Instead, I had to share a double bed with my daughter and my son had a single. Three single beds would have been more comfortable. We also had a mouse in our room but it didn't do any harm. The window didn't shut well, so at night the wind blew a loud and cold draft through the room. All in all we had a very pleasant stay at the Hotel 17. It is a lovely and cosy place with a lot of style in an excellent location! It is quiet and the bathrooms are very clean! We'd love to come back some time!

I don't understand the negative reviews that Hotel 17 seem to get. I stayed at the hotel 17 with a friend in october and my overall impression was good. The hotel had a good location with good breakfast restaurants in the surrounding neighbourhood. Although the room was very small (we barely managed to get an extra bed in) it was clean, as was the shared facilities. We got to stay at the Hotel 17 after its sister hotel Hotel 31 had messed up our reservation. We, however, got a friendly greeting at the Hotel 17 and they really saved our stay in the big apple.

Please don't let anyone talk you out of booking a room at Hotel 17. I found the service to be more than adequate, and you certainly can't beat the price. As an example of the service: I found that one of the toilets was overflowing, and the front desk had the problem resolved IMMEDIATELY. Sure, the rooms are small, and the bathrooms are shared, but 1) you're in NYC to get out, not to stare at your furniture and 2) except for that one aforementioned time, I never had a problem with the bathroom. So if you're looking for a centrally located place to hang your hat (or cap), at $75 a night, and you love NYC, this is it.
