“Great Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights, and this place was clean and in a convenient spot close to Union Square metro. We had a sink in our room and 2 bathrooms (with showers) on our floor down the hall-1 was always available. This place was exactly what we were looking for and we had a great stay.

...But what more do you really need? Packed full of tiny rooms, with obviously a big turnover of guests (in whom the reception staff appeared to show little interest). But a bed, a basin (cold water), and shared bathroom (only had to wait for this a couple of times) and fairly clean. Soundproofing allowed good reception of Aussie's phone conversation next door. Excellent location near Union Square. Good diner for breakfast on a corner opposite, and an excellent restaurant (Mumbles) on another corner. Given the enormous cost of accommodation in New York, this is really pretty good value for what you get.

I must say in advance that NY city hotels are very expensive, and this one was affordable for us. We got a room without bathroom, but the restrooms were close to our room and they were clean. Our room was small , the bed was small, but there is always a reason when it is cheap so we did not have much expectations. Overall, our room was clean and warm. The hotel has good location too. So i would not hesitate to stay here again.

My Daughter and I stayed at this Hotel last November and we really enjoyed our stay. We were delighted with the location, it is situated across from a park in a lovely quaint street. The Hotel itself is clean and quiet and the sharing of the bathroom was not a problem as it always seemed available and was cleaned after each person used it. I would recommend this Hotel as it is cleaner than some of the pricey NYC Hotels I have stayed in, We are returning to NYC next February and we are considering staying in the sister Hotel 31 only because we know it will be similar standards to Hotel 17 but a different location to explore.

Rooms are very small but no surprise. Clean sheets and relatively clean bathrooms depending on when you shower.

Our disappointment was with the service. The two different staff members that were asked questions could not even stop looking at their computer screen when spoken to and replied with "yes or no", which stumped us as it didn't even answer our question.

The location is good. Just a few blocks from Union Square.

Would not return.

Hotel 17 was one of the cheapest central hotel options I could find (outside of a hostel) booking 6-8 weeks in advance for New York in October. Hotel location is good (about 10 minutes walk from Union Square 14th Street Metro Station) and there are plenty of shops, bars and cafes etc. in the area. On the Metro it is easy to travel downtown (Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, Staten Island Ferry etc) or uptown to Grand Central Station, Central Park etc. Reception were friendly and helpful. The single room that I had was fairly basic: quite small, TV with limited channels, and no coffee making facilities, but it had AC, was reasonably quiet, had a room safe and was comfortable - and for a sightseeing trip where I was mostly out and about was a very good option. Bathrooms are shared but they seemed clean and there are enough of them that it was never an issue finding one free (even if you needed to go to a different floor). There is no restaurant and nowhere to get refreshments (e.g. coffee) except by leaving the hotel. I stayed for two days and it was just about right for my needs (and budget)

When I go to NYC, I prefer to stay in the less touristy/less businessy/more trendy areas, even when I'm there on business.

Everything about interacting with other humans at this hotel annoyed me though. I can go on and on about the details of the interactions but I won't. Basically, we tried to check in with a business card because we were staying on business (as I am sure most people in NYC do...) but apparently not in this hotel. Apparently since there are two names on the card (Company + Personal Name and since Company shows up on sign slip, this is a No-No for them because a "company can't sign") they even photo copied our identification and our credit card (still waiting to see if we get fraud charges). So strange. That whole process took at least 20 aggravating minutes (because they wouldn't tell us what was wrong or what they were doing just that it didn't "look right").

I expected the rooms to be old and dusty, which, has it's charms, but, the bed was basically made out of springs - not exactly comfy, and your head is shoved under an air conditioner (which is a nightmare for anyone with allergies because I'm sure that thing has never been cleaned). The front desk staff, three times, popped up from UNDER (?!?) the desk when we needed something (once when we came back at night and noticed cleaning staff had not left us new towels, another time in the morning when we wanted to check our bags before heading off to early meetings, and a third time when we came back to retrieve said bags) and was incompetent and/or seemed to be on something every time. I felt a little like the lobby and corresponding "staff" was out of a bad hotel horror movie, like the Tower of Terror ride at Disney with actors paid to be ridiculous caricatures instead of actual employees. I probably would have been more amused and charmed had they not annoyed me so much.

The neighborhood is great. The bathrooms are clean and lock from the inside. Those are pluses.
