“Third time not so lucky”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

This was my third time staying here and my wife and I stayed in one room with my parents in another.

As before, the rooms were clean and the shared bathrooms were always spotless.

What let the hotel down this time was the attitude of the staff, no where near as friendly as our previous visits.

I think three times in NYC might be enough, but, contrary to my previous review, if I do return to the city again I'll be looking for another hotel.

Spent 3 days over the July 4th holiday and was rather impressed with this hotel. We had a triple room on the 8th floor with 2 double beds with plenty of room for the 3 of us. Room was clean and spacious with a sink and mirror and toiletries and towels. Shared bathroom was close and very clean and saw the maid several times during the day making sure it was spotless for the guests. Never had more than a few minutes wait to use the bathroom and there were only 4 rooms sharing this one. Overall was a very pleasant experience and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel or book another stay. It is tucked away on a quiet mostly residential street with cafes and restaurants nearby.

The reason is that people who used them did not clean up afterthemselves and that is a problem.
The cleaning staff was very good, especially ROSA who really was honest, neat and did
more than expected. I liked James at the front desk, but could not figure out why when i 'rechecked in, there was no record of my rservation for one night. They accomodated me
very gradiously but.....Central location and bargain price, makes this unbeatable, no matter
how messy your neighbors...

Room Tip: I have no idea about which rooms are quieter, but it would be helpful if they provided a channel gui...

This has become my "go to" hotel when I'm in NYC. Amazingly reasonably priced, clean, well kept rooms, if a bit small (quite variable though - I stayed in two stretches this time separated by a trip to DC - one room had not only a twin bed but a desk and dresser, the second round, the room had just the bed and a small night table). Conveniently located for getting to pretty much anywhere around town. Wi-fi can be a bit spotty at times.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a desk if you need to use a computer.

head up to NYC for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade every June. Usually share accommodations with a friend, but this year found myself bunking solo. so my mission began to find affordable lodging in manhattan! what started as a daunting task, ended with a gem of a property. i reserved a single room for two nights at Hotel 17

. arrived in NYC, took the subway to the union square station, and walked from the station to the hotel. easy walk, in a cute section, with lots going on. check in was a bit busy, but when it was my turn at the desk, it went smoothly with no complications. i was given a room on the 6th floor. i believe the hotel has 8 floors. i walked down the narrow hallway, past the two bathrooms, and found my room. immediately ran back to the bathrooms and pleasantly found out that although they were for everyone's use, they were quite private. one toilet and one shower in one. a shower, sink, and toilet in the other. i was afraid that there would be multiple toilets in each, taking away from privacy. the whole two nights i was there, i never had to wait for the bathroom. my only complaint is that the bathrooms did not have soap or paper towels. so, remember to carry some soap with you when you go.

my room was small. one twin bed, a night stand with lamp, small window with AC unit, small tv within a narrow entertainment console, lockable safe, a chair and vanity, and some hangers for clothes. was concerned about the small space upon initial viewing, but it was more than sufficient. the AC unit is noisy, but kept the room cool, and sleeping was easy. the bed was comfortable, although short and the pillow could have seen better days. the room was quiet and i was never awoken by hallway or outside noise. i think if you had a room across from the bathroom, it could be noisy with people in and out of the bathroom at all times.

the hotel attracts a wide variety of guests. i'm 35 and a professional, there were parents with school age children, college age americans, and many european backpackers. great international feel.

check out time is 12 noon, which is a bit later than i am used to. you can also leave your luggage in the secure luggage room at check out, go explore the city, and return for your luggage prior to your bus/plane/train departure. as long as you pick up the luggage by 10pm, you are set.

i am so happy to have found hotel 17. it is clean, safe, with an exciting feel. walkable to many subway stations. bordering 2nd avenue which has a plentitude of bars, restaurants, etc. i will be back!

Room Tip: choose a room at the end of the hallway, away from the public use bathrooms.

This is the first time I've stayed here having previously stayed at their sister hotel, Hotel 31. The hotels have very similar look and feel. There's free wifi that's reasonably fast, very clean rooms and equally clean shared bathrooms that are never further away than a couple doors down the corridor. It's a reasonably central location and a good bus service that takes you up to the UN on 1st Avenue in about 20 mins. It's got a very old fashioned feel but I think that just adds to the character. My personal highlight is an elevator/lift that seems to 'sing' to you as its approaching with the radio playing Lady Gaga or Michael Jackson, which always makes me chuckle.

With the white stone façade, deep registration desk, vintage elevator, and dark wood paneling, the hotel has a cozy old-fashioned vibe. The rooms aren't large but they are nicely appointed. There’s no surcharge for Wi-Fi and the signal’s decent. The mattress passed our bedbug inspection, which we’re careful to perform everywhere but especially in NYC. There’s a sink in the room and bathroom down the hall. The bathroom on our floor seemed clean (nothing smelled) and its only sign of use was hair in the drain (guest discourtesy). The location—17th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues—is terrific: lots of restaurants, very close to the L line (at 3rd and 14th), and safe. We had just arrived from Paris, so it was a real plus that we could reach the hotel from JFK by a simple combination of E and L trains. 17th Street is quiet for NYC, so once you drift off you should be able to stay asleep. If there are two of you and you mostly want to sleep, ask for twin beds as the queen (if it’s like ours) may have a center dip.
