“If you have can pay $50 more, Do it!!”

I always book the cheapest flight I can find and cheapest hotel in the best location I can find. Last year after a trip with China Air I decided that if I can afford it I am paying for a better airline when I travel next. Hotel 17 is convinced me that I should do that for my hotels as well. Look! there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this place. It is one of the cheapest priced for its cathegory, it is definatly clean, and in a good location.

But, it is not in excellent location. the real place to stay south west of Unnion square ( closer to Washington square park as possible) or slightly north in the meatpacking district. So the location is good but not excellent as it is claimed.

Rooms are so small that I can not fully open my luggage. I am sure not all of the rooms are like this but in my room there is no place to even stand. I had to wear my socks in the hall way sitting on the floor once since my travel partner occuppied the only avaliable standing room while he was dressing up.

I am a very heavy sleeper, I have never thought that I will be complaining about noise in any place ( I slept 15 hours on the way to NY from sydney in the plane- NOthing wakes me up) but apparently hotel staff vacuuming the hallways 6:15 am on a Sunday would wake me up. I thought it was a bit much.

Rooms are awfully hot and there is AC but it is so noisy that you can not leave it on and sleep. Not just yours every other room also have a noisy AC that every time your neighbours turn theirs on you wake up as well. I managed to get max 4 hours of sleep each night.

So if you have to stay here stay. But if you can afford 50 more dollars a night i am sure you can find something a bit better where you can enjoy the place you are staying a bit more.

“Every budget traveller's first choice”

Hotel 17 is a great budget place to stay in, for those who do not need more than a comfy bed and a clean bathroom. Rooms are small but very decent. Shared bathrooms are cleaned several times a day. Hotel is very quiet, so excellent sleep quality. Staff is polite and helpfull. Hotel is located in a quiet part of town, with a very conveniently connected subway station 5-10 minutes of walking away. Only disadvantage is that some rooms don't have a sink, so that even for those small washes you have to use the shared bathrooms. In conclusion this hotel should be every budget traveller's first choice in an otherwise overpriced city!

Room Tip: Some rooms do not have a sink - ask for one.

“Fantastic price for great location”

Stayed with a friend for 6 nights in August / September 2011. Great location - few blocks from Union Square and we were able to walk to many places we wanted to get to. Quiet, and leafy street (both relative terms given its New York!) in a nice neighbourhood. Shared bathrooms were fine, clean, simple, good shower and didn't have to queue once during the stay - could always find another one if full. Twin room we stayed in was, I thought, a good size given my expectation that in NYC space would be tight, and given the price. No breakfast but the Sunburst cafe a short walk away was very reasonable. Good service - helped when needed extra towels, booking an airport cab and recommending breakfast place. You could hear other people in the corridor at night but then as I always sleep with earplugs it didn't bother me! Nice comfy (single) beds. Got hot in the evenings but then it's a warm climate - chose to have the aircon off during the night. Wifi was a bit hit and miss, didn't seem to work or was very slow quite a bit of the time, so that was one downer. Would definitely go again and recommend to anyone looking for reasonably priced, well placed accommodation for exploring Manhatten.

Room Tip: We requested room with a sink and quiete room and were put away from the bathrooms which was good I...

“Stressful check-in experience....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2011

This was my first visit to Hotel 17. At the reception desk, James was neither helpful nor forthcoming with information. The overall impression was that James was not particularly eager to extend himself or to welcome a weary traveller. New York can be a stressful place to visit -- At Hotel 17 expect the bare minimum from this individual in terms of genuine interest in making your stay in New York easier. Hotel 17 deserves better representation at its front desk. Other employees at the Hotel, including management, were much more helpful once you are able to get past this desk clerk.

Room Tip: Not all singles have sinks in the room, so you will have to request one.

“Better than its counterpart Hotel 31”

I picked this one based on the reviews and the best combination of price and quality ratio. I believe most travelers will agree with me on this method since they have a budget. I also reverted here because the front desk guy at Hotel 31 was rude to me when I inquired about there rates and availability.
Very close to Union Sq (green & yellow line) station going uptown (Times Sq) or downtown (Chinatown).
Stayed there 3 nights. Liked this place for what it is. Very clean bathrooms. I think there was a cleaning guy on 24/7 because I went to the bathroom twice every night and it was cleaned regularly. Staff was friendly in a neutral way. Nothing too impressive so I didn't think much of it. Overall I would stay here again.
One small problem my relative's room the A/C was dripping from the floor above so I put a rag on it and told the staff. The problem was not resolved though and she was a bit annoyed by it.
