“a bargin in the middle of manhattan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

location - 57th street between 6th and 7th ave. great location to tour the city - a 5 minute walk from central park and its surroundings. a short walk from the MoMa, a short 10 minute walk to Times Square and many other broadway theatres.
a short walk from a few metro stations that connect the hotel to all other parts of the city.
about 50 minute by metro and AirTrain from JFK.

rooms - we got an apartment almost, not a room. the rooms are huge, specially for manhattan and for this price...our room had a small kitchen with micro, fridge and sink. 2 flat screen tvs. bed quite comfortable. the decor is very minimal and outdated, but didn't really care as the room was mostly clean and tidy. there are a few scratches and marks on the furniture, but again...i was not bothered by them.
the view is of the building opposite, so not much view...

internet in the room and public spaces costs money and too much money...

breakfast - for 10$ a huge breakfast - not merely continental. contained a few kinds of fresh fruit, cereals, eggs, many varieties of pastries and breads all seemed fresh, pancakes... one of the best "continental" breakfasts - the selection is big and the produce fresh.

staff - mostly friendly. tried to help with every question we had.

other amenities - no pool, fitness center or anything like that (i think...)

overall - although the rooms and public spaces are outdated, when we stayed it was one of the cheapest in manhattan and for its price you get a great location and a huge rooms.

Room Tip: expedia vip members are eligble for free breakfast and room upgrade which we got. great breakfast...

The Salisbury Hotel is in a great location and close to a number of subway stations so you can get easily around Manhattan. The rooms Re a large size and ver clean. Most rooms have kitchens or pantries as the hotel calls them. None of the king size bed rooms have a pantry so if you want a pantry ( fridge, microwave, coffee machine etc) opt for a room with two double beds. There is plenty of luggage space and closets and the bathroom is well stocked with toiletries and towels. The rooms at the front of the hotel are noisy as they are on West 57th Street. We were a family group of 8 and had three rooms. My parents room overlooked 57th Street and was noisy so a word with the staff at reception and they were moved to a room at the back in minutes - staff were very helpful. The beds were comfortable and sheets clean. We didn't eat there but the Morton Williams supermarket across the road is open 24hours and has great quality food, a place to eat your purchases and free wi fi.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back if you are light sleepers.

Just returned from our recent New York excursion , staying once again at the Salisbury. Yes it is tired and needs a lick of paint, but for location and size of rooms, it will be hard to beat.
Located on 57th, two below central park it is ideal for visiting the big Apple. Metros either side of the hotel, you can get just about anywhere from here. A stones throw to central park, few minutes to Times square, across the road from Carneige hall and the Russian tea rooms. Around the corner from FAO SCHWARTZ, Bloomingdales, fifth avenue. You could not be better located.
The rooms are huge. Ex apartment block and you can tell. Our wardrobe was bigger than a lot of New Yorks hotel rooms.
A new supermarket opened up across the street and they sell everything. So, if on a limited budget this is the place to get , breakfast , lunch or evening meal. The steaks are marvelous. We have been to restaurants and paid a lot of money for not a lot of steaks, these are good.
Al, Nick and Paul on the door are most helpful and knowledgeable and more than willing to offer any assistance they can. Local knowledge is always a bonus.
The lift can take an eternity, but hey , everybody else in New York is in a hurry, this gives you time to chill.
Next holiday here already booked.

Room Tip: Rooms at rear are quieter

I took my new wife here as a part of our honeymoon. Just 3 days until we moved on to San Francisco. After reading these reviews I went with the Salisbury due to its location, right next to Central Park. The suite was large and beds very soft. The rate wasn't bad either especially for the location and being NYC prices. It is however in drastic need of a refurb. The lifts smelt damp, the walls were dark due to wear, general grubbiness and didn't look the most inviting. The furniture looked like it was from the war but everything you expected to find (iron, board, hair drier and air con) worked just fine. The male staff were very "NYC". Straight talking and too the point, but occasionally quite harsh (luckily not to us or a would have destroyed them), the female members of staff were amazing however.

Overall great for location and price but needs a complete overhaul. If, like us, you are planning to spend most of your time exploring then this hotel is perfectly good.

We booked a bedroom suite and had read that the rooms at the Salisbury Hotel were larger than your typical NYC hotel. We were however stunned when we saw how spacious the room really was! The room consists of a large hallway with a kitchenette (which includes fridge, microwave and sink) and large living room (with a desk, sofa, chairs, table and a TV). The bedroom itself is also pretty spacious and the bathroom pretty standard. I loved the fact that the room had not only 1 but 4 "walk in" cupboards where we could store our clothes etc. Pretty handy if you don´t want to live out of your suitcase if you´re there for a while (as we were).

As others have pointed out already this hotel is (a bit) warn. Having read a lot of Tripadvisor reviews before we decided on this hotel we were not expecting a modern hotel. I was however a bit disappointed when I saw how dated it really was. The worst thing was probably the large section of mold I discovered hidden behind the curtains in the living room area. That kind of thing should have been taken care of!

Most of the staff were friendly and smiling. Houskeeping did an ok job, the room was clean but not spotlessly. And if we hadn´t left your room at 11 AM they would give us a set of new towels and be back to clean the room the next day. A bit strange seeing as many of the guests may be jetlagged after a long flight and need to sleep in a bit.

The location is without doubt the best thing about this hotel. It is situated only two blocks from the south end of Central Park. A lot of major tourist attracations is in walking distance (i.e. Times Square) and the area around the hotel has a great deal of convenient stores and resturants, not to mention great shopping! The hotel is situated between two Subway stops which makes it easy to explore the city further.

If I stuble upon a good rate I may as well stay here the next time we´re back in the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a rare facing room (possibly one of the highest floors) if you prefer a good nights sleep. W...

We (family of 3) stayed 4 nights in a standard room (room 816). This was a standard hotel room with 2 double beds. It included a small fridge, microwave, and coffee maker.

At check in (about 11:30 am), we were given a room on 57th street. Reading the reviews here, I asked for a room on the other/quiet side of the hotel and we were assigned 816.

From this room, we barely heard any traffic noise. Only twice did we hear anything and both times it was sirens and it was not very loud.

The window unit air conditioner kept the room cool but is noisy. After the first night, we got used to it and it didn't bother us.

The beds are double beds. They are comfortable but being used to sleeping on a king at home, it was a challenge for my wife and I squeezing into the double and we are not large people.

If you have children who want to watch TV, you will be disappointed in the lack of stations you can view. No Nick, Disney, etc. We could only see about 10 channels but we were not there to watch TV so no bother for us.

I've read reviews about the slow elevators. I can tell you that they were not an issue during our stay. Both elevators were operating and the wait was never long.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. Subway stations on either end of the block. We took the R to Chinatown and to the Statue of Liberty ferry. Less than a 5 minute walk to the subway station. 5 minutes to Central Park and about 15 minutes to Times Square.

It is an older hotel but clean and comfortable.

The staff all week were fantastic.

Before we arrived we knew from other reviews it was old and a bit tired in places and it was, but don't let that put you off. We had a one bedroom suite which had a small kitchen area with fridge and microwave, a table and chairs then in the living area a sofa and chairs. Unlike moist hotel rooms there was ample storage with 4 walk in cupboards and loads of hangers. The room was clean, the beds comfortable and the staff very friendly.

The best thing about this hotel is the location, we like to walk as much as possible and we were 5 minutes from Central Park and 15 minutes from Times Square, it was great to go out in the evening and be able to stroll back to the hotel afterwards. We didn't try the breakfast as there was a Starbucks and a good deli opposite which were much cheaper.

I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone who wants to see the sites, you would be hard pressed to find a better location.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back we were on the 11th floor at the front and the traffic was loud.
