“If it wasn't for the location......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

My wife and I just spent three nights at the Salisbury in New York, and if it wasn't for the terrific location and the relatively (Manhattan terms) low price, we would never have considered it, and would never go back again. First off, I am the type of traveler that enjoys splurging a bit on nice accommodations when on trips as I think it adds to the overall relaxation and experience. Therefore, I am not unaccustomed to paying in the $300s for a great room in a great location with great staff, beautiful surroundings, and wonderful amenities. The Salisbury has one of these, the location - it is perfect - entrances to two subway stops are half a block in each direction, Central park is two blocks north, Rockefeller is a 10 minute walk south, the location is perfect if your destinations are anywhere in Midtown, and honestly anywhere in Manhattan if you do the subway - which is so easy. However, the hotel itself is mediocre at best. Two very slow elevators, old rooms that are clean, but very outdated, terribly hard beds and awful pillows, and unfriendly staff (which to an extent can be expected in NYC), certainly dampen your experience. The continental breakfast, now $9 per person is not worth it considering the restaurants and grocery stores that are within a block. So if you are going to Manhattan to see the sights and come back exhausted late at night to only be out fighting again first thing in the morning and want a clean room in a great location for a great Manhattan price, than this is a good choice - if you want anything more, go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Back side and mid height - construction on an adjacent building starts at 7:00 am M-Sat

The location can't be beaten. 2 blocks away from Central Park, one and a half blocks away from 5th avenue. Subway stations at either corner of the same block! Walkable distance to Times Square, and great shopping around. This place was a bargain for the price!
Ok, it is an old building, so if you are looking for luxury, look somewhere else where you'll pay $$$, but if you are ok with a place that offers you very comfortable beds, very clean rooms with the amenities you need, the Salisbury will give you that.
The only downside was that the Bellmen were not very helpful, and/or they had to few of them to cover a high demand and that the elevators are slow, not to mention only one was working and they are small!
I was upgraded to a suite since the hotel was sold out, but even if I wasn't it is an excellent place to stay in New York City, and the price could not be any better!
I will be looking to stay here again in the future!

The most positive aspect is the location, close to everywhere and the subway is just around the corner. The room and bathroom sizes. are good and its clean too.A kitchenette was also included in our room which was a pleasant surprise.
The negative is the breakfast which is not worth USD 9.00 per person.
All in all,an extremely nice and comfortable stay with a helpful staff at an economical price.

Room Tip: Rooms on the backside of the hotel are quieter.

One elevator worked. Wait , wait and wait some more. Not fixed in our 5 day visit.
Breakfast voucher. What exactly is that? Total confusion on the part of staff about these.
$9.00 for breakfast. It is not included in price, it is inferred. Double charged for 2 days.
Most staff is RUDE and INEPT.
Room fairly clean but not vacuumed in the 5 nights we were there.
Surprisingly quiet in the room.
Location is the only reason to stay there.

We stayed in a junior suite and compared to what we had heard about NY hotels were very pleased with this hotel. The room was large with separate living area and kitchen.
The hotel had old world charm and is only 2 blocks from Central Park and a short walk to the Times Square precinct.
We had a great stay & would stay here again.

I just spent a week in New york, My girlfriend and i stayed at the Salisbury Hotel, almost across the street of carnegie Hall and just down the block from 7th avenue shopping, 2 blocks from Central Park and half a block from Broadway!. Absolutely great location. The Subway station is at the end of the block. yoiu can take the "R" and "Q" train downtown or out to many attractions.
The hotel is a lovely older hotel. The rooms are quite nice and roomy. The beds are a bit hard but its all about preference!.
We found the showers nice and hot. Our room had 2 queen beds and a sitting area with 2 comfy chairs. A good size television and lots of dresser drawers for our needs. There is a huge closet for hanging clothes. A fridge. microwave and a coffee maker are in the room as well.
We will definitely stay here again!
Oh and btw, The concierge and hotel staff were amazing with directions, and even have a supply of umbrellas for guests when it rains!.

Room Tip: ask about the matresses. depends on what you like.
