“Great hotel, a few flaws”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We stayed for 6 nights at the Beacon, in a 2 room suite (BR plus sitting room/kitchen). The hotel is located close to the Metro, a few blocks from Central Park, a half hour walk across the Park to the Museum of Natural History and a little further to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was a quiet oasis, particularly after the .shock of arriving at bustling Penn station. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable, and access to restaurants and food is easy (try Isabella's restaurant a few blocks away and buy great food at the supermarket opposite). The desk and concierge staff are efficient and helpful.

Only 3 weaknesses. The bathroom in the suite we were in, while adequate, was very small, one of the smallest we have ever experienced in many years of travelling - no place to leave toiletries, and it could be uncomfortable for some travellers - ask for a room with a large bathroom! Second, there was no washing up detergent provided requiring purchase of same, with a lot wasted at the end of the stay. And third, the airconditioning is old and very noisy, sufficient to wake one up during the night if you have it going in the same room - we shut the bedroom aircon down and relied on the second unit in the sitting room to keep the room cool, which worked well for us. If you are in a single room and a light sleeper, watch out for this.

Room Tip: Ask for a large bathroom and for a quiet airconditioner

Two weeks ago week I stayed with my daughter in the Beacon Hotel for three nights. It was the fourth or even fifth time that I stayed in this hotel that feels like home. We love the location, two minutes fromt the subway, the neighbourhood, upper west side, Fairway across the street and the hotel itself that was renovated during the last few years.

We stayed at the Beacon for 4 nights in October with our kids. The Beacon lived up to our expectations and more. Location is fantastic, with Central park 3 blocks away and the 72nd St subway station less than 3 minutes walk. The area is a bit more residential than Times square and we felt perfectly safe day and night without having to battle crowds. The Fairway market across the road is fantastic, with plenty to tempt the whole family and the kitchenette in the room is well stocked enough to prepare whatever treats you buy there. Directly below there is a great restaurant which serves generous helpings of simple but well executed meals, with a brilliant range of desserts (go the Key Lime Pie!). The staff are friendly and the rooms are spacious by NY standards, with everything you need from cable TV to coffee facilities. There is even a Century 21 about 10 minutes walk away for bargain hunting.

Bottom line - if you are travelling to NY with kids I would look very seriously at the Beacon. It's got everything you need: space, plenty of food options, easy transport, an amazing park that's an easy piggyback ride away and a very safe family friendly location.

The Beacon Hotel in New York is situated very close to the 72.nd Street metro station and thus only one stop from Times Square. The rooms we had were very large and had a small kitchen that allows you to either prepare a meal or to bring take out and eat in comfort in the room. We found the room clean – the only animals we encountered were the little dogs that some people on the lower floors have. We did have a problem with the air condition system – but after four tries it was corrected on the fourth day of our stay. We found the staff very friendly – naturally somewhat busy as it is a large hotel. The elevators don’t work properly. Almost every day one of the three elevators was out of order and under repair, and we had one incident were the elevator wouldn’t stop. A bit scary. As we lived on the 10.th floor that was a problem –especially on the day we left as we had to take the elevator going up from the 10.th floor with the luggage as it was always full when stopping on the way down. That has to be fixed.
There are so many restaurants nearby – from the little diner Viand next door ideal for breakfast to Luxembourg on 70.d and Coppola on 79.th
The room was quiet – we asked for a view but didn’t get it – I take the view must be wonderful from the top floors. For a morning jog the central park is very close.
There is free internet in the hotel even in the rooms– more hotels should think this way!
Adding to this the convenient situation of Fairways – a very good supermarket across the street - it was a good experience to stay at the Beacon – with a few flaws.
We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Try ask for a room with a view.

Could not possibly say enough wonderful things about this hotel! We stayed in the suite - and were so impressed my husband took VIDEO of the place! **THREE** closets in this suite - one of them a walk in! Seriously, splurge for the suite if you can...

Room Tip: Go for the suite...

This review is a little late since we stayed there in July.
This was our third trip to NYC, absolutely love this city and our first time at this hotel. We try to stay in a different area each time we come. We loved the Beacon Hotel, it has a fabulous location on Broadway and 75th, and as others have said it's in more of a residential area. The subway is a short walk away, 2 small blocks to be exact and there is a supermarket across the road. The apartment we stayed in was immaculate and spacious with a kitchenette and a lovely view . We are from Australia and I couldn't believe the amount of Aussies that were staying at this hotel, it was like a little piece of home in the biggest city in the world. Will definitely stay here again on our next trip to New York, really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and throughly recommend it.

I have stayed at Hotel Beacon twice and plan on returning on my next trip to New York. The hotel is located on Broadway just two blocks from the 72nd street subway. The Fairway Market is directly across the street, Trader Joes's a few blocks away, and lots of restaurants, bars, Riverside Park, and shops within walking distance. The Upper Westside is less chaotic than midtown and has a distinct neighborhood feel. The hotel is clean and rooms are spacious with kitchenettes. The only reason I didn't give the hotel 5 stars was because of my last stay in room 1701. The room, unlike others, is cramped and level with the rooftop with views of equipment and a work trailer. The staff is friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: Avoid room 1701.
