“Not great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

Stayed here with a group of ten ladies last week-end. Rooms are TINY with almost no storage. Maybe fine for a single but not two people. Bellman took our suitcases off the trolley but did not take them to the room but waited for a tip anyway. My husband sent a basket with champagne and I received a message on the phone to come down to the desk to pick it up--no offer to bring it up to me!! Not at all woth the price and I will not reccomend it to anyone.

Stayed there several times with my young children. Suites are a good size and comfortable. Our last stay, we spilled juice on the bed, and housekeeping came right up with fresh sheets. Another kid perk is the Lego table outside the breakfast area where there's free public WiFi.

Love that it's right across the street from the Natural History Museum and Central Park. Don't love that we stayed several times yet there was no personal service. Also that the breakfast is all you can eat, or nothing. You can buy a coffee separately, but if you want a bagel you have to pay the full price of the buffet.

Restaurant in the lobby is fine. I wouldn't go there unless I were staying in the hotel though.

Will be looking to try a different hotel next time we're in NYC. But would still recommend the Excelsior for it's location.

Stayed here on a recent trip to NYC with the family. The hotel was clean and the staff was very friendly. The concierge was great and helped us plan some of our touristy outings, including a Broadway show. The hotel has parking available in a lot across the street...and the rates were very reasonable. It is only a short walk to the subway and it is very easy to grab a cab at the street corner (even on a Sunday morning). Great location that is close to Central Park and everything you would want to see in Manhattan. Will definitely stay here again on my next trip.

My partner and I stayed at the Excelsior in NYC for 5 nights; returning a couple of days ago. Upon arrival the reception staff upgraded us immediately to a room with a queen sized bed on the 15th floor. The view was amazing, overlooking the Natural History Museum. We were very satisfied with the size of the room and facilities. Shower was excellent. The hotel, as past reviews have stated, is approx 1 minute walk from a subway station and Central Park is over the road. We purchased an unlimited Metro card as soon as we arrived, costing $30 each, which we used everyday, multiple times a day, to get everywhere from Battery Park to Times Square. It is really easy to understand and use; so our biggest recommendation would be to use the metro and make the most of the hotel's great location. As previous reviews have also said, the street and surrounding areas are noisy throughout the night. We found the room and hotel in general very stuffy and uncomfortably hot at night - the AC was too loud to have on at night so sleep was broken at times.

Breakfast is stupidly expensive at the hotel so we did not try it, instead we took the metro to whichever area we were exploring that day and found a classic diner - cheaper and tasty! We went to the bar in the hotel a number of times and loved it. Good atmosphere.

Customer service was generally good, however I would say it was the hotel's weakest area. Particular members of staff were rude.

Overall we were very pleased with the choice of hotel and would stay again. Enjoy New York!

Stayed 3 nights. Room had extra siting room that was great. Quiet, clean, and super comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Wish wish wish their was room or at least breakfast and coffee service in the morning. Elevators are a tad slow and crowded. Nice bar. The location is fantastic access for anywhere in the city.

Stayed here for 4 nights.A very pleasant man on reception made us welcome-a great start.
Our room was fine,a good size for NYC, with a bath and shower.Did not use the bar or restaurant so can not comment on this. Our room was warm, comfortable and had a tv.No fridge or coffee/tea making facilities. You can buy a bottle from a liquor store and the hotel has an ice-making machine to the left as you turn out of the lifts. However 2 minutes across the road to World Coffee or Andys Deli gave us our coffee fix.A subway at the end of the street gets you into Times Square etc within 15 minutes.Plenty of eating places/bars around the hotel on Columbus and Amsterdam Avenue. Would suggest St James Gate on 81st and Amsterdam as a cracking Irish pub

I planned a weekend of activities on the upper west side with my young son and this was the perfect place to stay. We arrived Saturday and left Monday, on a weekend that we expected wouldn't be very busy. The front desk attendant was friendly, cheerfully upgraded our room when I asked, and spent a few minutes giving me recommendations about where we could find quick and easy food. The room was very clean, and very pretty. If you're new to NYC, you might find it small, but by NYC standards, it was a good size. Our view of the museum and skyline was beautiful. It would have been worth paying for, as we spent a fair amount of time enjoying the view. That said, the windows are old, and the street noises are loud. If you're not used to street noises, bring earplugs. I was on the 14th floor. It was still loud.

The breakfast buffet was nice. The attendant was lovely. The food was decent, convenient, and speedy, but there are other options nearby if you would rather get out and enjoy the city. There is a deli nearby that serves breakfast and delivers...the cheapest option. Andy's Deli, I think. It's on Columbus Ave, one short block South, on the other side of the street. Monday morning, we ate a few blocks up at Good Enough to Eat. It was delish, but not cheaper.

The location of this hotel is wonderful. It's right across the street from the Natural History Museum. Walk down the block, cross into Central Park, and you'll find a playground right there for younger kids. My son loved it. The diner is super handy, there is food everywhere, and there is shopping nearby. The subway runs right to the museum, so that's easily accessible, too. We took the train into the city, then the subway right up to the hotel.

Easy, beautiful, convenient. We'll be back. Thanks for a great stay!

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the museum are worth it.
