“Upper West Side Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

The Excelsior is one of the very few hotels on Manhattan's upper West Side. It's also a good, if not cheap, one. The rooms are reasonably sized by NYC standards, many have views of the Museum park, and all seem to be have been recently renovated. The breakfast buffet is quite nice and reasonably priced. The fitness center is adequate. If you need to be in that part of town, it's a good choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a park/museum view.

Convenient comfortable hotel for the sights and sounds of NYC, to save a few dollars at breakfast try Lenny's deli, come out of the hotel turn right, down to the bottom of the street turn right again and it's 2 blocks along on the right, very basic but hits the spot with good coffee.

I thought the location of this hotel was fantastic in relation to using the Subway (used 79th and Broadway stop) and situated close enough to downtown Manhattan to explore but far enough away where sleeping at night was not a problem. Central Park is literally just down the road and you can walk anywhere you want to go from the hotel. New York is easy to get around and the UWS is a great part of the city to stay at. I walked back from 34th street to the hotel one day which was also really great. I thought the front desk staff could have been a bit more friendly but they did their job and the room I had was great - spacious, clean and comfortable. I would stay again at the Excelsior just for the location and price. It was also good that I could leave my bags at the hotel before officially checking in. Breakfast prices standard at the hotel. There are other breakfast places near by.

Stayed at the Excelsior from Sept 29th to Oct 3rd upon check in there was no warm welcome just a rude man called Borici, he informed us that our agent had booked us 2 single beds when the reservation document clearly did not reflect this, did however rectify this after some perseverance.

He did not even welcome us to the hotel after a long trip and choosing his hotel out of the numerous available in this great city. After being given the room keys he did not even direct us to the lifts or floor of the room including telling us about the facilities available to us.

This did not ruin the trip and did not see him again during my stay, the hotel itself was quaint and had a lot of character, room allocated (given that this was given after some negotiation) was facing buildings at the rear of the hotel with no view, however the views were to be had from New York itself and not the room. Bed was comfortable and room facilities good with no issues other than the poor reception on arrival. would stay there again although improvements with customer care may well be the focus..... As the saying goes, "first impressions always last"

Room Tip: Had asked for a high floor got a 3rd floor room facing houses with very noisey ice .

Stayed overnight in Manhattan after a show and found the Excelsior to be OK. It is clean and in an excellent location on the upper west side. But there is nothing outstanding about this hotel that would make it better then average. I have stayed at other NYC hotels at comparable prices which had better amenities and larger rooms. In addition the AC in the room would not stay on which we reported the next morning. Another drawback was no small fridge in the room. Lastly- not much of friendly greeting at check in.

Room Tip: Street facing rooms have a nice view but can be noisy.

Wasn't sure what to expect as this hotel cost significantly less than other places I looked at. We stayed with our family of 4 for one night. It is beautifully situated on the Upper West Side, between Central Park West and Columbus Ave. As others have said, it is directly across the street from the American Museum of Natural History. There are a lot of historic buildings around and the streets are tree-lined. It is extremely close to Central Park. A much quieter and more pleasant place to stay than Times Square in my opinion.

We were upgraded to a suite, which was great. The hotel is well-kept and traditional rather than trendy. It was very close to the subway. Everything was clean, and in order. It was much nicer than I expected for the price and the people that worked at the front desk were friendly. There are tons and tons of restaurants in the immediate neighborhood. We had a fun time at "Say Cheese" a grilled cheese restaurant on 83rd or 84th, and at Alice's Tea Cup, a great breakfast/brunch place with an Alice in Wonderland theme on 72nd and Columbus or thereabouts.

Walls were a little on the thin side-- could completely hear person upstairs taking a shower but that is the case with many hotels that cost a lot more than this. No street noise from room 1209.

Room Tip: Room 1209, a suite, was quiet at night.

This review forms part of a Cosmos tour we took to view the autumn foliage in New England.
We arrived late after a computer failure at JFK, so dark but warm welcome received at hotel.
Quick trip to corner of nearest block revealed expected global coffee company which offered us
a perfectly drinkable beverage. Hotel room had good beds so we slept well and in the morning very
hot water for shower to start us well on our tour. We only stayed around 12 hours at this hotel but
from previous experience gained in New York it seems to offer all that is needed for a trip to this
great city would stay again if needed.
