“Reasonable Hotel But Expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

We stopped at this hotel for one night in September 2013.

Hotel is excellently located in midtown, two blocks south of the Empire State Building, (in fact you can see it from the hotel entrance), five minutes walk to Macy's, fifteen to Times Square and Theatres.

Hotel staff friendly and courteous at all times. We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was spacious and comfortable, although a door between the bedroom and seating area woyuld have been nice, so that one person could read etc if the other was in bed. The view was poor. We were at the back of the hotel, and overlooked an office building. Although this meant a quiet nights sleep, we had to draw the curtains for privacy at all times during office hours. Room was both clean and comfortable, with excellent air conditioning. The general decor is dated with need of some TLC, but the ambience and history of the hotel sort of makes that fit in. We did not experience the free morning coffee and muffins available in reception in the morning as we left to catch a connecting flight at 0600hrs.

My only complaint would be the cost of the room. Our Junior Suite was $278.90 after all taxes, $240 before. Was the room worth equivalent of £160 per night, I think not. It might be fairer to advertise the room cost with all taxes included as this added another £24 to the nightly rate. Without breakfast, I think this is expensive for a reasonable standard hotel. Certainly not the luxury accommodation or facilities I woiuld expect for that cost. I dont pay that much in London, and the hotel we had in Houston was much cheaper but of first class quality. I booked well in advance, and would have expected better rates, but New York does seem excessively expensive for reasonable hotel accommodation.

Overall a reasonable experience but a price.

Room Tip: If you want a view ask for a front room, though this will look out onto the street.

Stayed for a week. This is an older style small hotel a story walk from Empire State, Times Square and Broadway. Great spot in midtown between high end shopping district and soho smaller boutiques. museums are a bit of a hike about 25 mins walk but it straight up 5th Ave which is a couple steps away from doorstep! The room is a little quirky with pretty wallpapers. There is a bath with shower, toilet, basin and a small closet with a safe. It's a little dated so its not sparkling but it has great feel of a NYC apartment. They serve muffins and coffee and tea in lobby for brekkie, which is average but there are so many places to eat if you want a larger style meal it's not far to find something. There is no restaurant but a small shop can be found off the lobby with drinks etc.I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Get the entire experience and ask for a room overlooking street. We had 319 it was great.

the hotel is extremely well located - it is not very expensive BUT you definitely get what you pay for: keep in mind that the hotel is quite old and so are the interiors... The only complain I'd say I have is the noisy AC in my room, but since I did not spend lots of time in the room, I didnt mind it that much. To sum up: you are in the middle of Manhattan there.

You get exactly what you pay for with the Wolcott, good value at an excellent location. The hotel isn't swanky like some you may find in the City but what it is is clean, roomy and tidy and in a brilliant location. We used the hotel as a base to explore New York and it was perfect. A few blocks away from the Empire State on one side and then just off of Broadway (close to Macys) on the other. Took about 15 minutes to walk to Times Square. They offer a range of muffins and coffee for breakfast which I had not previously had at any of the hotels I have stayed in New York before. They were gorgeous. This not only saved a considerable amount of money but also time as we didn't need to worry about breakfast! My partner and I shared a Queen Suite with my mother. She had a smaller room with a single bed within it separated by an arch. It would have been nice to have a completely separate room but this kept our costs lower and it was fine. The bathroom was large, nicely tiled and the shower was AMAZING!! I totally recommend this hotel and will definitely go back.

Hotel is well located but rooms were dirty with accumulated dust in all corners, a noisy, non-functioning AC unit, lousy beds and surly staff. Even baggage lockers ate my coins. This place is relatively inexpensive for id-town NYC but we opted for the Jr. Suite and expected more than a hallway with a single bed and no doorway to main bedroom which was tiny.

Room Tip: Spend more money for comfort.

Traveled with a couple of friends just this past w-end. Would go back. The only problem is the reception staff. Not friendly at all, more so the older gentlemen that checked us in the morning of Saturday 8/31. He is very rude and not welcoming at all. The reception area could use some cleaning after since many guests stay in that area awaiting transportation. Nobody is looking after the cleanliness of this area after they leave.

I would definitely stay here again - the place was old for sure, but I found it charming and it was clean. Also, our room was MASSIVE! It was like 2 regular size rooms in one! There was no view except for the building next to us which was somewhat disappointing but not a huge deal. I really loved this place because of the art deco style and old-New York feel it had. The location is AMAZING, walking distance to Times Square, 5th Ave, and Korea town. Very central location. The front desk staff were mostly helpful and there was a lady in the lobby for most of the day who just helps you book shows. They got us tickets to Phantom of the Opera for about $60 cheaper than at the Box Office. The beds could be a bit softer but New York is the city that doesn't sleep so it encourages you to get out! Also don't miss the free coffee and muffins in the morning!
