“Great Place to Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

We accidently found this little place after two of our other bookings fell through at the last minute. And was a great find! Two friends and i stayed here for nearly 3 weeks during the Christmas and new years break. We had a 1 bedroom suite, and were over joyed when we all got our own bed (two king singles) and pull out sofa. We had hoped for bit of space for the time we were away, and also 3 females travelling together after a month can accumulate a lot of shopping! There was a very small little kitchenette, and little dining room set. The decor was a bit old school, but it made the place feel homely.

Most of the staff were super great, and very helpful and friendly. One seemed a little grumpy, nearly every time we saw him, but maybe he was having a bad time!

I was very impressed with the Christmas wrapping facility available and the host was awesome, was a really nice touch!

The location was excellent, a little bit out of the craziness of Times Square, but so easy to walk to everything in no time! i do love the city!

The only neutral comment i will make is that it would've been lovely to have a self-laundering facility. Particularly when you offer suites, guests may be long term.. so that would've made my stay. But not too worry!

Overall, a great stay!

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better! the street noise is very loud (we were on floor 8).

Very nice hotel in the centre of Mahattan. The rooms are big and clean. The heating system is a little bit old. We had to change rooms because of the heating in our room had some problems. The hotel staff was very helpfull. Very close to the Metro (about 5 min walking distance). Just in front of the hotel there is also a bus stop (line 101, 102 and 103). Just accross the street on the right side you can find a good and cheap restaurant for having breakfast. A good place for your money.

Room Tip: Take a room above floor 6!

Good location. The suits have big comfortable rooms. They have free wifi in the hotel rooms . Unfortunately they do not serve breakfast but there are several coffeshops on the same street that serve breakfast.

Family of four with plenty of room to roam corner room. No artificial retro here. Felt like walking through a pre-WWII era movie set (elevator mail slots and all). Most impressive was the real mattress queen pull-out (anyone remember Castro-convertible), my biggest concern. Slept on it with teen son, and both were comfortable all night. Opened windows (70 degrees pre-Christmas weekend - Whaaat???) to relieve some stuffiness, and hear the sounds of life in the big city. New vinyl windows moderated sounds well when closed especially keeping fan/blower on (NYC city trick for newbies who need to drown out sounds to sleep). Stay away if you need the new Asian-fusion/cold industrial style rooms without tubs just showers. This hotel is for a real NY feel/experience. Starbucks basically next door (part of connection with the Lex) provided everything needed to eat (Raffles from a previous visit/stay at the Lex has great American fare, too). Wife felt right at home in wing back chair and the small library of original old books. Real wood furniture for real people, shame on whoever stole the finials off the four poster bed. Relatively new flat screen TV. Mix of old and new taking away from neither. Wouldn't mind trying the larger king suite next time, price notwithstanding.

We stayed here on a trip to NYC for my Girlfriend's birthday. They upgraded our room for free when they heard it was her birthday and our room was spacious, clean and bright. The staff were very friendly and helpful. If you are planning to stay here, let them call a car service to get you to and from the airport to save you time and money!

A cousin recommended the Roger Smith when I visited my son for x-mas in NYC. It is a totally cool little oasis in midtown. Not modern fancy, but old fashioned cozy. Like going to my great aunts house. Wallpaper in bathroom is identical. If you want sparkling new slick and fancy, stay away. If you want a very comfortable, great priced midtown location this is great! We had a king suite with a separate huge bedroom and a large living room w pull out queen. Tiny little kitchen too! Most NY hotels have a small room filled mostly by a bed. We had a nice little home for less $. VERY nice not in your face folks there too. Awesome location. Heading back with girlfriend in May.

Room Tip: We had 1020

I have stayed at the Roger Smith Hotel perhaps five times over the last ten or so years. The last time was 2010. We recently spent four nights there in early Dec. 2013 and it is more than tattered at the edges. The house keeping was done by the blind. Behind the TV we left a note alerting the housekeeper to the herd of dust bunnies that had morphed into creatures. Their had not been a cleaning there since Mayor Wagner was in office. The bath tub didn't drain - well no wonder it was full of hair.
The flesh colored tile may have been in fashion during the Wagner administration but guess what
a whole industry exists in the hotel business that can paint that surface to be any color you want.

The bed was warm which was good because the heater was turned off, however it was shaped like an old plow horse con caved. Ok then they then turn the heater on.

After a night of depth charges sounds like we were in a sub-marine we understood why the heating was off.

This for over $400 a night.
