“Just what the traveler ordered”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2012

I stayed at the Chelsea Lodge a few years ago and remembered it fondly, so I stayed here again for a recent visit. It's the perfect place for me when I visit NY. Yeah, the rooms are a little small and it’s a bit noisy, but hey, it's New York! I felt like I did when I lived here years ago in college. The things that really matter to me about it are: it's clean, I felt safe, I was walking distance to food places (24 hours yay!), and several subway lines are nearby. I was happy to revisit an old friend, definitely would book it again!

My 10 year old daughter and I recently visited NYC for the weekend and stayed at the Chelsea Lodge. It was perfect..walking distance to plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and Chelsea Piers (bowling alley, ice skating, rock wall, etc.). It was only a 10 minute cab ride from Grand Central Station too. This hotel had a cute and homey feel...more like a bed and breakfast (without the pricetag!). Very clean with a private shower, sink and toilet in our suite. I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed 4 nights in a Parlour Suite, having seen a recommendation in the UK Sunday Telegraph. The location was very convenient for the subway, nearby shops and restaurants and a few blocks away from 5th Avenue and the Empire State Building. The suite took the form of a spacious room, adjacent to the street, which had been sub-divided to include a bathroom with a highly dangerous shower head, difficult to control, and a reasonably equipped, small kitchen. Our main concern was the noise factor combined with a very hard bed under the window on the street side. Traffic noise was continuous till past midnight, then started up again in the early hours. In addition, there was noise from renovation work being carried out on the church, immediately next door. The suite was reasonably clean, with some "interesting abstract art work" on the walls, but the area was jaded and in serious need of attention to bring it up to a reasonable standard. In particular, the decoration of the entrance area left a lot to be desired!!

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms in the front

A nice place in the heart of Chelsea. The hotel is in a nice three floors building in a quiet street. The rooms are very small and do not have toilet but only the sink and the shower. I agree with the reviews talking about a non satisfying sleep quality of the room: the bed is not particularly big and the heating runs mostly in the night sending a flow of hot air just behind your heads. Breakfast is not available so you have to eat every morning in one of the several coffee shops or restaurants in the contiguous 8th Avenue. In the end, finding an apartment to rent in the same are can be a bit more expensive but worth it.

Room Tip: Ask to see the mini apartments with kitchen

We have mixed reviews about our stay at Chelsea Lodge. I knew what to expect but my partner was very underwhelmed when we arrived and saw our room It was tiny with a double bed, no toilet (as I already knew) and a shower in our room. During the night we were both very hot and uncomfortable, there was no way (that we knew of) to control the heat. The pipes made loud noise and in the morning it was very loud outside of our room in the lobby. People talking and walking up and down the stairs. The second night my partner was very sick from some seafood that he ate. We contemplated leaving the hotel as he was sick and uncomfortable, but we stayed and left first thing in the morning. Our stay was ok but I probably would not stay again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra money for a "suite"! The regular rooms are too small for a couple.

We stayed 4 nights in Chelsea Lodge during winter. Reservations were made through their website, 5 months in advance.

Location: Nondescript brownstone building in a tree-lined neighborhood, with a local NY feel to staying here. There are no signs for the lodge so just trust that you got the right address - "318" is on the right side of the doorway. The subway station is a few minutes walking distance with diners and grocery stores/pharmacies nearby.

We arrived in the evening and check in was straightforward. No lifts so be prepared if you have heavy luggage. Luckily our room was on the 2/F. The stairs were creaky; not sure if this was additional noise in some rooms but it did not reach ours.

Our first impression was that of a lovely room with adequate space (We had 1 luggage), and enough wardrobe space. No safe available, but we locked our valuables in our luggage with no problems. Shower took up to several minutes to turn warm, but otherwise ok. There are 2 shared toilets on the floor, they were always clean and we never had to wait to use them. Free wifi too.

However we felt that the cons outweighed the pros.
- The double bed sagged in the middle and we had to sleep near the edges of the bed.
- The pipes in the room were noisy.
- The room got unbearably hot at night. The heater, which was next to the window, turned off when we opened the window. Then it got too cold!
So we woke up frequently at night, and never had a good night's sleep in Chelsea Lodge.

Maybe, if at least the bed was comfortable we would consider returning, but with a chance of a sagging mattress (also reported by some TA travelers) we prefer to try elsewhere the next time we are in NYC.

However New York is very expensive for accommodations so regardless of the flaws of Chelsea Lodge, this might still make a good option for those on a budget.

We stayed here for 4 nights whilst visiting NYC for the first time. Yes, the rooms are small. Yes, the toilets are shared. But it didn't matter. We were out exploring the city all day and night, simply returning here to sleep and shower in the morning.

The location in Chelsea is brilliant - close to Chelsea Market and The High Line. We walked pretty much everywhere, taking in the sights and sounds of the city along the way.

It's not the Waldorf Astoria, but nor does it pretend to be. If you want a clean, simple and functional base for your stay in the city at a reasonable price, stay here!
