“Great Service and Elegant Room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

My wife and I recently stayed at the Plaza for our anniversary and found the room to be nicely decorated and the butler service to be fantastic. Location can't be beat. Only downside are small, slow elevators. Hope to be back some time soon.

Our first time staying here at the Plaza Hotel and it was fantastic. The staff very all very helpful and courteous from the moment we were greeted by name on our arrival, checked in and shown to our room until the very early morning departure we had to make due to an early flight back to the UK.

Our room was located on the 15th Floor and looked out towards FAO Schwartz (great shop for toys!) and 5th Avenue. We had booked an Edwardian Suite which has a large bedroom with a separate lounge area with a sofa bed settee which could be closed off. This was a great arrangement for us as we were travelling with our 20 year old son so we all had plenty of space during the day and we all had our own privacy at night. There is also a small kitchenette/wet bar area along with a second WC off the lounge area. The room was fantastic and in very good condition, the bed extremely comfortable and everywhere was very clean. Plenty of towels in the very spacious bathroom which had a separate shower as well as a huge bath. Two huge flat screen tvs and the ipad to control the room settings and access the web was a great modern touch.

We had breakfast every morning in the Plam Court which was a lovely setting and the buffet was very good. A nice mix of pastries, cold meats and cheeses and three hot dishes. We also had drinks most evenings in the Rose Club which had a lovely atmosphere and was quite lively. Todd English food hall was also a fascinating place with a great mixture of foods and drinks, very vibrant and fun and great for some late lunch.

The ONLY downside with our stay at the Plaza was that the exterior of the hotel is currently undergoing a very extensive renovation. The outside of the building is shrouded in a wrap, hiding the scaffolding by replicating the look of the hotel which is very clever but this obscures the view you have from your room and it can be a bit off putting when the occasional worker walks past your window when you're on the 15th floor! We also had work going on directly outside our window on the last couple of days, when we returned to our room earlier than previous days as we were all shopped out and wanted a bit of a rest before the evening. My husband did raise the point with reception and they apologised for the inconvenience and said that work is only carried out between 10am - 4.00pm to minimise disruption but as a gesture of goodwill they gave us a reduction in the room rate for our last couple of nights. As he pointed out to the reception desk there was no mention of these renovation works at the time we booked or anything about them on the hotel website.

Apart from this slight inconvenience we absolutely loved the hotel and location and can't wait to go back and enjoy that little bit of luxury and fantastic shopping again.

Room Tip: High floor and 5th Avenue or Central Park view.

Dear SueD193,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review here on TripAdvisor. I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay, from the helpful and courteous staff to the room and amenities. I am also pleased to inform you that we are in the final stages of completing the mandatory façade inspection. While some scaffolding is still in place, the majority of our guest rooms and suites are now free of any view obstruction or noise disturbance.

Thank you again for your review, and we hope to welcome you back on your next visit to New York City!

We stayed here on a recent trip to new york and it was magical. The staff were so helpful from the moment we arrived they checked us in promptly and we were shown to our room. the room was very large and spacious and well appointed (especially for a NYC hotel) we had a deluxe room and there was a large crib i there for the baby. the location of the hotel is great as when we came out right there on the corner we went for a horse and carriage ride through central park. The amenities in the room were of a high standard and the towels were amazingly soft.

I would definitely recommend this hotel if you like quality and a touch of class. there is also some amazing shops downstairs which are of a high standard. also ensure you have the afternoon tea it is to die for. the only regret i had was i was only there for 2 nights and wish now it was longer.

many thanks to all the staff of the plaza .. we had an amazing stay

This is a beautiful Hotel in NYC, next to Central Park. We were able to walk most places and great shopping is right out the front doors. The rooms and bathrooms are larger than normal in NYC which is great for 3-4 adults. Our bellman Waheed was the best! He was so personable and friendly, he made us feel at home. Our only complaints were the early morning work noise due to the construction being done at the Hotel and the $10 bottles of water. On the 1st night we stopped at the bar for water not realizing that we'd have some in the room and the bartender charged us $30 for 3 average sized bottles which is ridiculous, even for the Plaza. Other than that our experience was a great one.

The plaza is a beautiful hotel with a great history and location. Unfortunately all this means nothing when the hotel offers dismal service. During our stay they were quite busy and the only actual service that functioned was the housekeeping. My room was ready 3 hours after check in time with no apology or compensation.

The Edwardian suite comes with butler service but dare ask the butler for anything and have him treat you like you are a peasant who is inconveniencing him. Ask for anything and be prepared not to received it. 3 phone calls for a robe and during our 4 day stay never received this robe. In fact, any calls requesting anything were ignored.

After an unacceptable first day I made an appointment to speak to the manager. When I woke up early the next morning for the meeting I was rudely told by front desk that "there is no meeting scheduled and that if I had a meeting with the manager the manager would be here"

Prior to this experience the plaza was my favorite NYC hotel. Sadly they have gone from 5 star servixe to 0. Clearly they are having management issues and not offering the service that a 5 star hotel should. I've never stayed at Motel 6 but I am sure the service level there would be better.

Definitely will never return.

Working on my bucket list, The Plaza Hotel made my first trip to NYC a dream come true. Excellent location overlooking Central Park. Walking distance to Times Square & Broadway. Travelling alone at my age, the hotel security was very important & I was comfortable returning even late at nite. The hotel itself is a historical monument & my room didn't disappoint. Beautiful, spacious & the bathroom was incredible. The weather was great, so having a room w/ an outdoor terrace was wonderful. The staff is very friendly & helpful. Lower level food court has an excellent selection of desserts, its a good thing I did a lot of walking. Fabulous hotel & vacation.
