“AMAZING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

Visited this establishment on 12/22/13. Everything was above and beyond what you can even fathom. Great knowledge and selection of both drinks (wine) and food, respectively. There is not one thing I would change about my family's experience here. Most definitely coming back to visit next year.

“A Real Disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

I was excited to see that Trip Advisor's sixth rated Italian restaurant in New York City was in my neighborhood, so I decided to give it a try. Sixth best in NYC? It isn't even the sixth best Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. For that matter, it isn't even the best Italian restaurant on its own block (that distinction goes to Patsy's, which is far better, but still overpriced and nothing special). The service and decor were pleasant enough, but the food was a real disappointment. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't anything to write home about either. Luigi's, which is around the corner, is a glorified pizzeria with slightly better pasta at a fraction of the price. I can't think of any circumstance where I would give Basso56 another try, even if it wasn't so expensive. The food just isn't good enough, and there are plenty of better options.

“Exceptional service and Excellent food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

We were lucky to get a last minute table. We were 25 minutes late, and they held the table; the food was perfect. The atmosphere - that of what it was - a family owned and run business serving excellent wholesome, honest and highest quality food. It was the perfect antidote to a day in New York ... and what exceptional service throughout.

“very good Italian restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

Fair prices, excellent selection of Italian wines
Great pasta (I had spinach and ricotta ravioli).
Small space but comfortable and with excellent service.
You probably need reservations. We fully enjoyed our dinner.

“Nothing better than the average Italian restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

Based on it's top ranking (#13 in November) we decided to have our last dinner in NYC at Basso56. We were seated at a round table with an uncomfortable bench. Our waitress was trained to act nice. There was quite some staff and some looked a bit bored as they didn't have a lot to do.

The wine selection was great and the Chardonnay we had was delicious. The appetizer I ordered was the baked smoked buffalo cheese, covered in bacon. It tasked strange, and when slicing it, it felt like you were slicing plastic. My main course was grilled salmon, quite nice.

All in all the food was ok, but not special at all. Definitely not one of the best. We paid $67 per person and that's not value for your money.
