“A good option for a budget conscious traveller”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago via mobile

I just finished a 3 night stay here and was quite happy with the experience. I was a little nervous after some of the reviews I read here, but I have no complaints.

I tend not to like shared bathrooms (I'm past my backpacking days) but by time I booked there were no ensuite rooms left. I was very pleasantly surprised by the situation as I never once even ran into someone else wanting to use the facilities, let alone wait.

The stairwell/hallways are very tired looking, but don't be put off by this. My room was basic but nicely done and most importantly clean! There was a basin in the room and plasma tv (not best channel selection, but you're in NYC so not much time for TV). The bathrooms on my floor had been renovated and were also always clean. The air conditioner is a window unit and really past its best - so noisy I couldn't sleep with it on. They do have overhead fans so I just had this on high.

The location is OK. You are not in the heart of things but you are only 2 small blocks from the nearest subway (103rd, 1 train on redline). I was able to go everywhere I wanted on the subway. There are also several amenities close by (pharmacy/market, diners, Starbucks, etc) so access to anything you need as well.

New York hotels are ridiculously expensive, so if you are looking for a lower cost option and not too precious about all the perks, this is a good choice.

After reading some of the other reviews i cannot see what the complaints are about. This is a hostel/hotel. If you want a hotel room get a private room. Stayed in a few hostels over the years and although this wouldnt be the best you still get what you pay for. The lounge area downstairs is quite attractive and greets you with warmth. The elevator is very slow so apart from checking in and out with gear I recommend using the stairs. The room was fine was sharing a bathroom with a corridor which i didnt mind it was clean and other users took consideration. As for the wifi not working in the rooms you are holiday so enjoy it and get off the internet. Convenient to 103rd st station which has lines 1 and 2 for the subway which is good for the main sites in Manhatten. It is a flat rate of 2.50 for the subway if not travelling far it is better to walk. Hotel can organise shuttles to the airport which for 20 dollars ia good value for money. Enjoyed NYC cannot wait to be back

Nice stay. Stayed in private room with bath. Room was a bit small, but hey you should be out in the city not in your room. Location was great. A few blocks to subway station and a good bagel place right across Broadway. Nice short walk to Central Park.

GOOD
- Very good location (101 St.) - 5 min walk from 96th and 103th St. stations
- Warm welcome every day at reception
- Free wi-fi in lounge area
- Very sociable
- Lots of leaflets for tourists

BAD
- Decor outdated
- Mixed gender rooms
- Bunk beds were old and uncomfortable
- Super thin walls = quite noisy

UGLY
- Painfully slow elevator!

Overall, I would still recommend this hostel/hotel to student budget traveller(s) as I got an excellent price for the quality and location! Wouldn't recommend to a more mature or pernickety crowd.

The room was satisfactory. it has shared bathroom which is fine and the location is great. Extremely near the red line subway. The price is valuable considering that it is in new york city. The common area could have been cleaner though. The internet is only available on the ground floor.

Stayed here just for a night. Arrived to find that we had been upgraded (bonus)! Staff were lovely and very helpful with any request we wanted. Ladies at the desk was exceptional. Would stay here again, reasonably priced for NYC, calm location, easy transport and a decent night sleep.

Location is perfect. Rooms are small, but ok. Bathrooms are ok, too, but towels feel very old. For a hostel, this is probably just fine. But for a "hotel," then things could be better. I checked in to a room & got into bed, and immediately saw a cockroach on the bedside table. I killed it and immediately asked to be moved to another room, which the front desk staff quickly arranged (they were also very apologetic). But, needless to say, it was hard to relax in bed after that. And that proved to be understandable, as I once again found a couple of tiny green bugs on the bed in the new room the following night. I was tired, and leaving the next day (and it was already midnight). So, no point in going through the trouble of changing rooms again. Just couldn't sleep much that second night either. These place needs to pay attention to pest control or at least have the rooms fumigated on a regular basis. I guess you get what you pay for! And I'll prefer to pay more next time, so that I can at least have a restful night...
