“Authentic Jazz pub”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2012

This is definitely a place for the hardcore jazz enthusiast. I'm not but could very much appreciate the melancholic melodies in this small underground place. Free entrance, with minimum of 2 drinks each. Worth the visit.

“Genuine venue, great music”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2012

This is a small venue in the basement of a building on Christopher Street - it was formerly a speakeasy. The decor is spare - newsclippings, headshots and album covers of jazz artists. There is a choice of seating at the bar or tables (with table service). For a $10 cover charge, we listened to the velvet tones of KJ Denhart accompanied by several very competent musicians. Drinks were averagely priced and there's a two drink minimum per set. The early band started at 6, the late at 10 and she played three sets. Tremendous value for money.

AND this is a venue that accepts under 21s provided they sit at tables rather than the bar.

“Music First”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

This is a no frills club for great music. Featuring a wide variety of musicians (often two bands a night these days) in a tiny club with lots of history and very reasonable prices. One of the best deals in the City. If anyone you are at all interested in hearing is playing here it's certainly worth a trip (and a lot better than dropping five to ten times as much in one of the big name spots).

“Great place to hear jazz”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

The 55 bar is one of my favorite hangs. Several bands play there nightly. There is usually no cover charge for the early set, and reasonable covers later. This venue presents young players who are just starting out, as well as more established musicians. Many use 55 as a place to introduce/try out new material. The crowd varies from night to night. Sometimes the place is full of raucous regulars who gather at the bar to socialize; other times there are mostly serious, silent listeners soaking up the sounds. 55 would never win any decor awards, but the floor isn't sticky and I'm not afraid to drink out of their glasses. No food here, but you're welcome to bring your own. The bartenders are knowledgeable about the music and can tip you off to good players on the schedule.

“Felt a little like NOLA!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2011

55 Bar was a cozy (I mean, slightly crowded) and weathered little jazz/blues establishment. I absolutely loved it. It reminded me a little of Fritzel's European Jazz Club on Bourbon St. The band was fantastic and the drinks were stiff and reasonable. I'd go back a hundred times. Thanks 55 Bar.
