“Nice hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

This hotel looked nice, was clean, had a friendly staff, and was in a great location. Located next in Times Square and near the Theater District. You can walk everywhere you want to go. Hotel rooms are a little narrow but it was enough room for us. I recommend this hotel!

For a first time visit to NY this hotel is central and I would recommend it.

However it is VERY expensive considering the size of the room, at least you get free internet, but for the price it better have.

September was a perfect time to see New York, would deffintly reccomend traveling at this time of year.

My husband and I chose the Hotel Mela based on it's location to Times Square and 5th Avenue. We had read many reviews on this hotel, some bad and some good. We were not expecting a large room due to the older style of the buildings. We were very pleased with our hotel selection. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The room was above what we had expected as well. Very modern and larger than we had anticipated. Very clean and plenty of room for all our belongings to be stored away. We were actually only about 1 block from Times Square which was less than what we thought. We ate a the Irish pub one night and it was very good. For breakfasts we went about 1 1/2 blocks toward 6th avenue and on the left side was a great place to have very inexpensive breakfasts. Can't remember the name but it was the "red" something? All in all, very pleased with the hotel and its location and would not hesitate to recommend or stay here again.

Room Tip: Not sure about selection of rooms.

This hotel needs some updating. Great location if you like Times Square. horrible HVAC system which cycled on and off constantly and it's one of those units that you can't really control the temperature no matter what you do with the thermostat -- it's always 70 degrees. it rumbled like a jet all night. the doors to the rooms do not completely line up with the jambs, so there is a lot of light that comes in from the hall, and hence, a lot of noise -- banging doors, elevators, drunks. i stay in NY every week for business and will not return here.

First time to NYC and after much discussion chose to stay at Mela for six nights.
Great little boutique hotel, great staff and the location is fantastic.
So quiet, but so close to the action. The rooms aren't big but that's NYC apparently.
The little attached restaurant is an oasis with its fresh flowers etc. food good and decent latte's which are hard to find.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front facing the street are quieter.

Great little hotel with a wonderful restaurant. Three couples travelling together did not agree on everything, but we did agree Melo was really a good choice. The Bistro next door (part of Melo) was terrific and one block from Time Square!!

The hotel is a few minutes walk from Times Square - it is modern and clean - the staff are helpful.
The reason I have decided to write this review is to advise about the room. When my wife and I entered the room for the first time about 15.00 hours we were surprised that it was so small and very dark. It was on the 6th floor and there was a very high brick wall facing us so there was little natural daylight. The furniture was dark wood and there was only one bedside light and no centre light. Because the lighting was so poor, in order to be able to see to unpack, we had to turn on the bathroom light and leave the bathroom door open but even this was not really adequate. The space around the bed was just adequate and there was no desk or chair so nowhere to sit down. On arrival it felt quite dismal.
We stayed for 5 nights and just coped with the darkness in the room by leaving the bathroom door open all the time in order to obtain residual light from the bathroom. We found the bed very comfortable and clean, as was the bathroom.
It is because our room was described as Superior that we felt before our trip that we would have a superior room but really they are the smallest rooms in the Hotel, about 190 sq.ft. If we return to the Hotel in the future we would upgrade to a Deluxe Room (about 220 sq.ft) or an Executive Room (about 300 sq.ft) both of which do have a desk and chair and just hope that the lighting will be better.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a Deluxe or Executive Room.
