I was generally disappointed with The Hilton New York. My boyfriend and I decided to stay as a Saturday night getaway. We booked the hotel on Priceline for $128 (before the taxes and astronomical service fees). To start, the lines to check in were relatively long. They have self-service kiosks, however when I went to use one to check in, it took me all the way through the process only to tell me that I needed to see an agent. None of the guests that I saw at the time were successful in checking in using the self-service kiosks.
When we got to the room, it was incredibly small. I know New York City hotel rooms are small, but this one was about the smallest that I have seen, period. The bed was a Queen (so they say, it looked like a full to me). My boyfriend is 6’ 7”, so a “queen” sized bed is quite uncomfortable for him. Moreover, the bed, although nicely made, had a huge stain of unknown origin in the middle. I called the front desk to see if they could switch the room to one with a King sized bed. I was informed that there were no more King rooms available, despite seeing 7 different King rooms to choose from when I attempted to check in using the kiosk just fifteen minutes prior. So I asked them if they would send housekeeping to change the sheets. Six phone calls and an hour and a half later, my boyfriend made an angry call to the front desk. He insisted that they send somebody upstairs with the keys to another room with clean sheets. They obliged. It’s not that we couldn’t be patient, but the room was so small that two people couldn’t exist in there without sitting on the bed and we certainly weren’t going to go near the bed with the “questionable” stain.
The second room was considerably larger, and the sheets were clean. The bathroom, however, wasn’t as clean as you would expect it to be. Everything was in its place, and there were an ample amount of clean towels, but the toilet had stains on the inner and outer portion of the bowl that looked like they could have been removed if they were scrubbed hard enough.
The whole experience did not make me feel as comfortable as I would like to feel when staying overnight. We made the best of the weekend by staying out as late as we could. I most certainly will not stay here again for any price, not because it was a complete disaster, but because there are so many other hotels in Manhattan, we don’t have to settle for disappointing service.
