“Excellent for the traveller on a budget.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012 via mobile

I am about to finish a very comfortable, friendly and enjoyable stay here. The hostel is clean and has a nice atmosphere, everyone is very friendly and helpful, both staff and the other guests, but I realise that the latter is luck of the draw! No meals are provided but there is a supermarket down the road and a great guy who sells all manner of fruit on the corner of Union Square. The transport links are great, with a subway station on that same corner ( roughly 3 minutes' walk) with connections to most of Manhattan available, and certainly all the major tourist sites. Only issue is that the window in my room didn't completely shut, but this was by millimetres, I was on the 3rd floor and noise wasn't a huge issue. I would definitely stay here if I were to return to New York in the future.

We were fortunate enough to be able to stay at this hotel, after hearing about it for many years. We loved the location, the price, and the staff. We had a room with a private bath, on the top floor. It was clean and had everything we needed. It's convenient to subways and buses. You can experience the farmers' market at Union Square if you stay over on a Saturday. There are great little places nearby to have breakfast, too. Book early, though, as they fill up quickly.

Room Tip: Higher floor, with private bath.

I stayed this week during two of the hottest days I have ever experienced in NYC. This was my (perhaps?) seventh stay here and I like it more and more with each visit. The staff is friendly and accommodating both on the telephone and in person. The room is basic, but has a flat screen TV. Mattress is very comfortable. I always use the shared bath and shower... never a problem. Usually I go to the supermarket (Food Emporium) across the street and pick up yogurt and a fruit cup for breakfast to eat in Union Park. Location is superb with three subway lines around the corner and several bus routes in all directions. Basic but sufficient.

Seafarers & International House is a guesthouse rather than a hotel, so it provides basic accommodation for much less than a hotel would cost in NYC. I stayed for 6 nights in May, 2012. I reserved a single with a private bath, and I realized when I checked in that the rooms with private baths all have two single beds and are the corner units. The other rooms are smaller and have one single bed, and use the hall toilets and showers. My cost was $116 for weeknights and $125 for weekend nights, and because of the charitable mission of Seafarers, no tax is charged. This is a real bargain for a prime location 1 block east of Union Square Park in Manhattan. Transportation by bus and subway is excellent from this location to anywhere in New York.

The room and bathroom were clean, but somewhat shabby. The mattress was comfortable and the sheets and towels were clean. Soap and plastic drinking glasses are provided, but no shampoo, etc. There is no hair dryer in the bathroom. There is a lounge on the mezzanine where two computers are available free of charge, and coffee and tea are available in the lobby for 25 cents per cup. If there was one thing I noticed, it was that both elevators could use a good scrub-out, but that's not a deal-breaker for me.

I was comfortable at Seafarers, and I would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: I would definitely always get a room with a private bath.

Seafarers is not a fancy hotel, but it has a great location, rates and is always clean and well run.
The staff are nice and by staying there you are helping a good cause.
My choice for short visits to NYC.

I stayed here February 2012 on an international school trip with 12 of my students and another teacher.

Firstly communication between myself and the hotel was great, and they never seemed to tire of my endless questions. Obviously, being responsible for 12 students overseas, I wanted to make sure that the hotel was secure and suitable to accomodate our needs; and we were not disappointed.

This is not a high-end boutique hotel with the usual expected amenites, but this is reflected in the price. And although the hotel is a little dated in decor, it's clean, comfortable and homely. I had a single room with a shared bath, and the room had a tv, plenty of drawer space, a rail with hangers, a desk and a sink in the room the bed was really comfy and the sheets were clean. The shower was just opposite and always had hot water and the water pressure was good. The shower could benefit from having more shelf room to put your toiletries on, but there are hooks on the back of the door to hang your things. The toilet was next to the shower room, and due to it being shared, i did find that other guests were not as considerate and therefore thought it was perfectly fine to pee all over the seat and someone else would clean it up. For this reason, i would recommend getting a private bath - but we were on a tight budget.

Some of our students shared a room and had a cot/fold-out bed to sleep on, which they said was fine but kind of sank in the middle, but hey they're teenagers, they can manage to sleep anywhere!

There's also a mezzanine level where there's a big tv and 2 computers with internet access. There's also a huge table area, which was ideal for us to have breakfast (hotel doesn't provide, but you can use the area to eat your own) and later the students would sit and fill out their workbooks and reflection journals.

In the lobby is a hot water tap - perfect for porridge/oatmeal - and there's tea and coffee available for 25 cents a cup - Bargain!

The location is just perfect, a block from Union Square subway, and there's a local supermarket/store half a block away for breakfast items. There's a good pizza place a block away called Amore Pizza - i think, and a good Tex-Mex place on the corner. Both are really cheap, but good quality.

Everyone we met at the hotel was really friendly, and really added to the whole experience for the students. All in all, we had an amazing time and we are hoping to use the hotel again next year. This was my third time in New York, and i can safely say that even if i make a personal trip, rather than a school trip, i would definitely use the Seafarers, but i would just pay the extra and get a private bath.

Thanks so much Seafarers - you were great!

Room Tip: Get a private bath room - i think you get a fridge in those rooms too
