“A slice of Manhattan Island - "Downtown"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Nice photo I'm seeing now, the view of the skyline at the very southern tip (now sans WTC, which used to be front & center, but with the new Freedom Tower, not in the picture, now looming large). Anyhow, this is the view one can see taking the Staten Island Ferry or in another boat to be caught in "lower Manhattan", either at the ferry terminal, tour boat terminals, or your own boat. (NY Harbor). But on land, most of these big buildings near the Southern Tip of Manhattan are related to "Wall Street", which is just behind the wall of big skyscrapers. There's also the Freedom Tower and WTC Tribute Center, plus lots of big, old Government buildings, both NY and Federal. A lot of history too: Fraunces Tavern (w/George Washington, etc.), other icons - including the "Wall Street Bull".

But that's just the tip "downtown" (Manhattan is on a North-South grid, so downtown means lower street numbers - though all bets are off in "Old New York", with Dutch-built cobblestone winding streets, still). There is to the East, South Street Seaport, with shopping, tourism, views of the E. Side Bridges. There is Chinatown. Little Italy. And depending on how low is "lower", up a bit further North, but still "downtown", is the village, SoHo, several universities, and some off-off Broadway and art. Lots of things, lots of people (workers, traffic, tourists, students). In sum: The southern slice of the island of Manhattan has lots to do, lots to see, lots of history.

“Grey Skies - Great ~scape!”

From and returning from - Ellis Island - beautiful views with a backdrop of rain clouds - giving a pearly sheen to the glass - a better aspect than the dazzle of the western sun! (Methinks!)

“Not worth the visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Less to do around here, especially as it gets dark. You'll need to stay in SoHo for fun times. The upside is Battery Park and walking up the West side of the island towards the World Trade Center site, and then making a big hike to the West Village or SoHo for dinner.
