My daughter and I go to Manhattan every year, we take the bus either from DC or Virginia, the cheapest way to go. Depending on which bus you take, you can either arrive in downtown (close to Chinatown) or midtown. We checked out Century 21 mall (downtown), AVOIDABLE, you can get better bargains and better items on 5th avenue you just have to be dilligent. For cheap theater tickets, go to TKTS on St John St(South Street) in the Seaport area, they open at 11:00, whereas TKTS in midtown open in the afternoon. Try Harry's Pizza, they have the best pizza. When you get tired, go to Bryant Park and sit on the chairs or the grass and watch people go by. For the best street food try the halal food on 6th Ave and 53rd Street, the stall arrives at 7:00 pm and leaves at 7:00 am, make sure the name "6th Ave and 53rd Street" is printed at the back of the yellow shirt of the vendors. This stall has become so popular so other vendors have copied the color of their shirt, but the name tells who they are. Prepare to stand in line, it is worth the wait. Good to have it after visiting MOMA or after theater. Have fun.
