“Studio-NYC 74th St”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

This is the second time I have stayed here. This time in a studio, room 4. The room was large, very clean and decorated nicely with new bathroom and cute kitcheonette. This room is on the street side so it was more noisey then the other side "E" where I stayed before. I would stay there again for a night or two. Close to alot of restaurants.

Room Tip: Rooms on the E side are quieter

Not sure which property the other reviews covered - this is one to be avoided. "Local character" does not excuse a miserable, dreary run-down apartment. We had a studio on the 5th floor, facing the street. It's a walk-up and that was clear from the beginning. Furniture would have been rejected by 2nd hand shops - bed was tolerable - bathroom ok but bath towels looked more like hand towels - tiny "kitchen" ok for boiling water - one chair & desk - grotty hanging space - wi-fi only available in the entry corridor, not very useful when you are on the 5th floor.

Total lighting in the studio? 3 table lamps and 2 of the 5 light bulbs were broken so there were 3 bulbs to light the entire place. Surprised we found it dreary?

What really staggered us was the fire escape plan shown on the front entryway. It did NOT cover the front studio we had (by my understanding, that should have meant the studio could not be occupied).. In fact, there was no apparent fire escape access other than the stairs up to the roof, which we did not investigate. This is not a small matter - in NYC fire escapes are life-and-death "must haves" - and this place does not.

The reviews about the neighborhood are spot-on. It's a fabulous area with huge variety of restaurants, cafes, shops, and near subway & bus stops.

By all means, enjoy the UES (upper east side) but find another place to stay.

My 13 yo daughter went on a one week shopping vacation to NYC. So safety was my primary concern. The area is the Upper East Side of NYC. Most expensive zip code in the US. The #6 train is 4 blocks away, numerous delis and cafe on the way. The hotel itself is on the corner of 74street and 2nd avenue. The manager is on site and easy to reach when I ran out of coffee. The room was actually a 1 bedroom apt. Small kitchen with oven/stove, microwave oven and single cup coffeemaker. The bathroom has a tub, a rarity in NYC apts. We were in the back of building and on the 4th floor so we did not have any noise pollution at night. The only drawback to some other visitors is that the building is a walk up, no elevator. My daughter and I did fine with 3 flight up but next time when I go back with my 65 yo mom I will request first or second floor. Also the apt has windows that open, its important for me as I can't stand hotels that seal the windows. We walked to Central Park and the MOMA every day. We didn't not see any other hotels in area so we felt very lucky to find this little Gem in such a nice residential area. We will be back. No room service or other amenties such as gym or business Center.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back for a quiet night and if climbing stairs is an issue ask for a 1st or 2nd...

If you're coming to NY, you're probably not doing much more than crashing here. This is a great place to crash. Close to Central Park and 5th Avenue shops, short walk to a subway stop. A couple of markets nearby make getting supplies easy, as well, if you wanted to use the kitchen area. We only used the fridge and the Keurig. We stayed in 2A. The bed was comfortable, I can't speak for the foldaway but there were no complaints. We slept five and didn't feel cramped. It's two small rooms, a small bathroom, and a small kitchen. If you want a spacious suite with brand-new everything, you'll pay for it, and you'll miss the charm of staying in a residential neighborhood.
BIG TIP from Danny: If you can manage to come in around 9:00 on a street-sweeper day (Mon or Tues), you may be able to do the crazy street-sweeper mambo that everyone who parks on the street does and get a FREE PARKING spot like we did. Two days for free. Just stay in your car until 10:30 in case the meter police come by.

I was surprised by my husband with a trip into NYC for my birthday, and as a 1st time visitor, I had no idea what to expect...staying here was absolutely perfect. It's not fancy...it's home. It's not a chain hotel...it's local. It completed the whole experience of being in Manhattan for the first time. Do your research and expect exactly what they tell you. No elevator (you're walking everywhere anyway, what's a few extra flights of stairs?) no internet except on the 1st floor (seriously, it's Manhattan, find something else to do besides checking your email), and be prepared to thoroughly enjoy your stay at 254 E. 74th when you're not out enjoying everything the city has to offer.
Oh yes, and I happened to leave a personal item behind in the room, and Danny was great about getting it returned to us!!

Room Tip: We stayed in 4A with kitchenette, small corner cafe table and stools, small sitting area with tv, ba...

Perfect for a couples overnight!! We were 1st time visitors to NYC & opted for this "local flavor" instead of a standard hotel. You feel more like a native than a visitor while staying on the Upper East Side, just 4 1/2 blocks from Central Park. Less than 10 minutes in a cab & you're in the Theatre District.
We stayed in 4A & LOVED it. On the 4th floor, includes kitchenette w/ stove, dorm fridge, microwave, toaster, cookware, plates & utensils. Easy to make yourself breakfast or dinner if you want to stay in. Bedroom is large, has AC & the bed is comfy. Bathroom is small but not cramped. Sitting room between the kitchen & bedroom includes a chaise & TV.
Clean & quiet room!!
The only complaint I had was no internet, although I was told that's available on the 1st floor only. Never met the staff, nor did I need their services. Security is not an issue as the property's front door has a passcode & each room has its own key.
We would defintely stay here again!!

Our time in New York was restful and relaxing because of where we stayed. East 254 Vacation was perfect for our family. We had two rooms. The room on the first floor was so New York with a sitting area and a loft bed. The full kitchen was very nice. Our second room was on the fifth floor. It was small but had everything we needed. The owner was on-site for most of the time we were there. He was helpful with resturants and travel accommendations. We would recommend this hotel for location and its charm. We had been in New York many times before, always staying in chain hotels. If you've been to one, you seen them all. This was delightful but no-frills. Price was just right too. It was easy to walk to many places and taxis were easy to find. We loved it!
