“They have some holdings that noone else in NY has!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Some go to the library more for its exhibits which are wonderful. But I find myself at the Performing Arts Library most often to tap into their wonderful holdings. They have some periodicals, for example, that even Columbia University's Butler Library system doesn't have!

I took off one star from my mark simply because, being part of the City's library system, the folks they get to work there (probably students mostly) are not terribly friendly, helpful or inspired in their work. On more than one occasion, I submitted a request for a book or periodical, and then go back and read a book (having been there before, I know the drill) for 30 minutes or an hour waiting for that one thing to appear. Frustrating to infuriating, depending on how much of a hurry you are in! But that is the library system and the folks they hire to man the inquiry desks.

“Katherine Hepburn Exhibit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

Beautiful space and the Katherine Hepburn exhibit was wonderful. The exhibit included many costumes and clothes that Ms. Hepburn wore in her lifetime. She was a tiny woman!

“a treasure trove”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

I hadn't been to the Performing Arts Library in years, but the Katharine Hepburn show at the end of 2012 sounded appealing -- and it was: well-planned, informative, and fascinating. The galleries are beautiful.
I discovered another exhibit that was even more impressive -- 50 years of original posters of Lincoln Center performances and events. Each was created by a major artist, like Warhol, Rauschenberg or Lichtenstein. I walked slowly through the show, absolutely enthralled by what I was seeing.
Just as surprising was the calendar I picked up near the exit. The library offers a busy calendar of cultural events. In January, they include Dixieland Jazz on Tuesdays at noon and Monday evening "songbooks" of new material for Broadway.
Exhibits and programs are free. (Listed at www.nypl.org/lpa )
It's a little hard to spot the Library, tucked in the NW corner of the main Lincoln Center plaza, just past the Henry Moore sculpture. But if you're interested in the performing arts, this is well worth a visit. And it truly has to be one of NYC's best bargains.

“Excellent Resource”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2011

The first time I visited the Performing Arts library was when I was in college, and I was able to find a video tape of an East German theater production that I used as part of a research paper. Their collection is amazing! Plus, there are rotating exhibits, which are often quite good. If you're going to be in the Lincoln Center area, I recommend poking your head in.
