Vacation Hijacked!
Our stay at Wet Eleventh was a massive disappointment. We are two couples, my husband and myself and our son and his wife, who booked the ElGreco apartment over the internet. When we booked it was advertised as a two bedroom which slept 4 people. (This listing has since been changed to properly state that it sleeps 2 or possibly 3 people.) We arrived to find that the "two bedroom apartrment" was actually a studio room with a bed, a wet bar - not a "kitchen with-out a stove"... and a side room with the only existing closet and one twin bed. We had many opportunites to book other two bedroom apartments, and the rent was much less that the $350 per night at the El Greco. We liked the proximity to our other son and his wife's apartment on W13th, and told the West Eleventh people when we booked that we needed space for our family as we were having a reunion. When we arrived we asked the person who checked us in how and where we possibly could sleep the fourth person, and he said that an air mattress would be set up for the 4th bed, but he didn't know where, as he had ""never" seen it set up for four people. He quickly presented a long form for my signature stating that it was to authorize West Eleventh to charge us for lost keys. After his departure, I was able to take the time to read the full document and discover that should anyone not registered as a guest be allowed in the building, we would incur a $300 fine! Our vacation and family gathering was totally hijacked! Our son and daughter-in-law had no recourse but to sleep on the floor of our other son's apartment! We were not even allowed to have our son's help retrieve to our luggage for fear of the onerous fine!
It is our guess that the people at West 11th are in financial difficulties, when observing that the plumbing was in dis-repair, sinks clogged, shower filling with water that wouldn't drain; missing screens on windows, lightbulbs not replaced. In their desperation to fill their calendar, they mis-represented their sleeping capacity and guest policy. In addition, beds were so carelessly made, as to have to be re-made each evening with the top sheet tucked in to the bottom mattress, - the maid service couldn't be bothered to make the bed properly. It was our fault not reading the fine print about guests, however, when we booked the studio, we explained that we had a family gathering. They had the opportunity to mention the ban on guests, which would have changed everything! We visit NYC every May and September and were hoping to establish a relationship with a West Village owner. It is certain that we will keep looking.
