After a long flight from Sydney we were welcomed by Silvia, who made us feel at home straight away and shown around the El Greco apartment which would be our home for the next two weeks.
A wonderful touch was the bottle of champagne waiting for us on the sideboard. Likewise, on Christmas Day we found some almond chocolate cookies on our door. Being so far from home, particularly at this time of year, it made us feel welcome and special.
The El Greco apartment accommodates three adults comfortably. It is tastefully furnished with a definite Greek flavour - this adds character to the apartment. The bathroom is very comfortable and roomy with plenty of hot water and towels which is always a must.
There is also a small kitchen area with a refrigerator and microwave - we would have liked a toaster as well. There is plenty of seating but we would have appreciated a lounge to relax on after having explored New York on foot all day.
West Eleventh is located in a terrific area with the Magnolia Bakery on the corner - the aroma wafting around is wonderful! Marc Jacobs is on the other corner! There are many designer, and unique stores within a very short distance (i.e. just around the corner) from the apartment building. I know we never tired of soaking up the village atmosphere and there are wonderful restaurants close by and within a ten minute walk! These range from a great pizza to really upmarket cuisine - we can recommend a few as can West Eleventh. In fact we went to at least three restaurants they recommended on their website and we were not disappointed!
If you're a coffee drinker there are a couple of great cafes/coffee shops as well. There are convenience stores as well as delis and a cheese shop if you want to have a night in, too.
We all enjoyed our time in and around the West Eleventh area and that includes our 22 yearold daughter who was in shopping heaven! It's sale time in New York.
The subway is within walking distance of West Eleventh, and we had no trouble finding our way around New York, and we walked a couple times down to the Rockefeller Centre (about 1 hour) for exercise!
A visit to New York at Christmas/New Year is an exciting experience - there is a different feel to Christmas and New Year. Christmas is beautiful with all the decorations on display in and around New York. New York comes alive for New Year's Eve and is such an exciting and vibrant place to be at this time of year and we will not forget this visit.
Our visit to West Eleventh complemented our New York holiday because we experienced real life in New York from fabulous shopping and food to the everyday life including laundry! (A drop off/pick-up laundry service is within an easy walking distance.)
The area is very gracious and elegant and as, we wandered down the side streets we saw some beautiful architecture. Most apartment buildings were decorated for the holidays (a must if you love Christmas and are away from home).
A special thanks to everyone at West Eleventh for making us feel so welcome and at home - we look forward to a return visit really soon.
